Austin Rivers recently said that 30 nba players could play in the NFL TODAY as in RIGHT THIS MINUTE! He blasphemous and foolish. #nfl #nba #nbaplayoffs
There are a lot of casuals out there. As a basketball player, I HATED even playing pickup ball against football players. The physicality and the motor most football players have is off charts compared to most basketball players. You could always tell who was the football player on the court because their defense was tougher and good luck boxing out or trying to get a loose ball with them in the area.
@@MikeM-np4od You'd think a professional athlete like Austin would know better. It's such a ridiculous statement, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a way to drum up engagement and get his name out there since he's not on a NBA court
Football is regimented drill that requires choreographed plays over and over again. Take Tyreke Hill, runs fast and chatches a ball. But Basketball is spontaneous and allows an individual to shine. Basketball has 440 spots. NFL 3,000 not including practice squads. Given the easiness of basketball and only 440 make it. By that standard alone Basketball is harder.
@@MikeM-np4odthere are a bunch of nba players who were ranked highly at football not saying they could play straight away but he’s right most choose the NBA for the money.
@@marshall1137 They were highly ranked in high school. High school ball is nowhere near the NFL level. There are highly ranked high school football players that don't even make it in college football. Flip side there are tons of NFL players that played college basketball too. Hell Ish Wainright couldn't make the Buffalo Bills as aTE, but make the PHX Suns. Playing WR/TE is much more than just running and catching.
A WR with the average build of an NBA player would get criticized for being too small to take a hit, not to mention, look at the legs on EVERY SINGLE player in the all-star pics. They are getting their legs snapped, ankles broken, and knees reversed on literally day one.
@@FadeHook236'4 and 200, lol. And? That means he can take a hit from a pro nfl player? Stop. I guess cause he is tall he can also fight mike tyson and cure cancer too? Wtf
I've seen Matthew Stafford get jumped by the Lions defense last playoffs like it was actually Detroit. Some quarterbacks take painkillers mid-game. Can you name me one modern NBA player who can take that punishment?
Most QBs excluding a lot of the older ones like Stafford are soft and whine to the refs. Bring up a line backer like Roquan Smith if you want to show why NBA players won’t make it in the NFL
Kawhi and LEbron used to actually play football in highschool, so if they choose football instead of basketball they might have been fine. Problem with basketball players is that they are too tall to play most positions. Football players are typically 5'11 - 6'5, while basketball players range from 6'1 all the way up to 7'4. Certain players wouldn't be able to play football based on that alone.
@@TheMailmanOfSteel Even Dennis Rodman had to be the best rebounder to play the game, but he’s also 6’7 with length, as well as a great defender. A very likely much smaller player with less length? They’d have to be at least good defensively to really be getting any minutes, cause if they’re not able to spread the floor or hit many shots AND not defend well, they’re not gonna play
Dude, shockingly, I've had insane arguments after that post from people actually arguing with me that basketball is a more physically tough and damaging sport to play than football. NBA players would sit out entire seasons for the injuries that the average 3rd string nfl player plays through.
More damaging in some ways, but not overall. Lot better to bounce back from poor knees and lacking mobility than it is CTE and having explosive anger episodes at your loved ones by the time you’re 50
whats crazy is when i see clips of nba guys going on podcasts of nfl guys they strait up say that they couldnt hang with the violent nature of the game. like they all have stories of high school practices where they say "that practice was my last day of football".
It’s a violent ass sport, and it’s especially bad for CTE and other issues as a teen. Both sports are really hard to be able to do both in, and it’s rare af for even a college player to really excel in both
There are 15 players on an NBA roster, 18 MAX during the playoffs, 53 players on an active nfl roster, and another 10 on the practice squad for a reason.
Austin needs to stop talking. He’s still trying to justify his nonsense take even now. First of all if this dude’s last name was Jones instead of Rivers he doesn’t even have the mediocre career in the nba. (8.5 points 2 assists and 2 rebounds a game ) Tony Gonzales, or Randy Moss, hell even Chad Pennington could have managed that. But congrats bro you made the news cycle so there’s that
Yeah, there's no flop rule in the NFL. Oh, and there's absolutely no 'load management', especially if you wanna even sniff the post season. Unless you clinch the division and home field advantage....you're ass is playing
Apparently only one person has played NBA and NFL. Legendary Vikings coach Bud Grant. Played with Minneapolis Lakers from 1949-51, and The Eagles is 1951-52 before going to the CFL. Then becoming an NFL coach. Been a few NBA/MLB off the top of my head, Danny Ainge, Gene Conley, Dave DeBusschere, and actor Chuck Connors. (Might be a couple of tall pitchers who briefly played NBA i cant think of off hand) Several more apparently, only one to try since Ainge was Mark Hendrickson ( one of those tall pitchers)
Good video, Christian. I think it comes down to the fact that these are very very different sports. They share a ball….and a couple other things. That’s about it. Particularly in terms of athleticism and WHAT you train for, it’s very different (also I’m kinda surprised I understood that NFL play sheet as well as I did, I must’ve gotten great sleep these last few nights, lol). NFL players train a lot, but ultimately it as a sport prioritizes explosiveness, physical size/mass/density, high impact plays, and protecting or attacking the other player (protecting or taking down, but there’s a lot of striking that goes on). It’s not a sport that prioritizes endurance as much, especially relatively light impact endurance. It’s also one that although you have to play only once a week because of injury risk and how much it stresses your body, and also play less overall time in the Regular Season and Playoffs. In addition, the team dynamics are pretty different, with the QB doing way more than any BB position, but many other players doing less than BB positions, and the amount of players playing being way more. It’s far less equal, far more violent and explosive, and played a much different way, albeit with certain similarities with coaching, plays and scheming, and advanced metrics/analytics. Basketball is a much longer sport, that emphasizes different skills and more equal and balanced play. It’s going to be a far longer and far more dense Season and Playoffs, and to some level, the talent level has to be a lot higher, as well as, to some extents, the minimum skill threshold for being able to play. And height is another major factor, which is a benefit in the NBA, but can even be somewhat of a detractor in the NFL, depending on how your body is. I don’t think most NBA players could play in the NFL, especially not for as long as they do in the NBA, even if they had the training and the time to alternate their approaches. But, I feel the same way for NFL to NBA. You can’t just pick up some pads and helmet, and do your best to just sprint some lines, and then catch the ball hurdling at you (an example of a position, although Football is more varied). You can’t just tuck in your jersey and try to just grab rebounds, especially not as 6’1, lmao. But I think that’s not the most interesting thing, because these are professional athletes, many of whom played both sports growing up. They have the physicality, the “intangibles”, the understanding and knowledge of sports and playing games, and many other features that could be covered under “intangibles”. It’s not as though that many NBA players could transition straight into the NFL, or the NFL could with the NBA, it’s that way less can, and THAT’S impressive. Simply being so good and so physically impressive and solid at sporting makes even a couple of them have the possibility of transitioning into very different sports. It’s awesome
I actually disgree with the grab rebounds thing football players are way more physical and have way more motor in situations like that than a lot of basketball players, all footballers are hustle players
@@lemonscentedgames3641 It’s hard to see how they could be making enough and long enough of an impact just doing that rebounding, while being, like I said, 6’1 or something. But to be fair, if we’re talking about players who fit the NBA more, I’m sure there are taller ones who won’t be dealing with as much length issue, but there’s still the factor of what else are they doing. You can’t just be rebounding and that’s it, they’d have to be solid defenders or capable of consistently scoring/play finishing. Both require a lot of skill, but I could see the example of a Dennis Rodman esque player coming from the NFL. I could also see skill specific and maybe a good PG from a QB, but they’d have to be exceptional to be one of the like 50 or so in the league
Nah. 30 nba player could. Past and or present. You gotta know most those guys played more than one sport and were recruited for multiple sports, including football. QB1 a bunch of nba players played QB in high school and some have played both basketball and football in college. An athlete is and athlete. I'd argue 30 NFL players couldn't play in the nba.
They get hit once and never play the spoet ever again. Lebron has a guard 60 lbs lighter than him pinch him and he throws himself 4 feet into the crowd. Not to mention that NFL players reallt arent tall lanky guys, this is for a reason, tall and lanky is bad in football, high center of gravity makes you easy to knock over and probably gona be slower than tinier guys
Only if they chose football. The NFL is the most complex form of football there is no way an athlete of a different sport would just come in and be able to play. High school football means nothing at all. Several top ranked players of their class never even sniffed an NFL field in their life and their life was dedicated to the sport. I'm confused on how you think 30 players could transition from NBA to NFL and not the other way around. Neither could transition to the other because saying they could is disingenuous and avoids the complexity of each sport.
Played both basketball and football. I couldn't shoot to save my life but still was able to play solid high school defense. Football - oh man, it took me like two years to be able to go for a contact without closing my eyes and screaming like a b*tch
Great point about how ya fall. I've seen countless NFL players talk about this. Just saw Barkley talk about this recently too. It is something you learn as you continue playing. At least you should. And there are a ton of NBA players who clearly never learned the skill of falling correctly.
There's definitely 15+ NBA players that could play in the NFL. Doesn't mean they'd be the best, but they could play if that's what they wanted to do. Most of em could be redzone WR or defensive ends.
I enjoy your polls, but my basketball knowledge is typically very shallow compared to my other sports (mostly baseball), so I often just default to LeUnsure.
Tall guys really arent that good in football really high center of gravity makes them easy to knock over and its easy to take their legs out. Theres a reason the tallest nfl players dont go much higher than 6'6 6'7 range
I think what he was trying to say is pure athleticism serves better in the NFL than the NBA. I mean there are so many positions in football that’s all footwork and strength with no ball. Basketball requires some level of being good at basketball
I mean with the right training I think there are many players in both the NFL and the NBA that could transition. Maybe not 30 guys but I do think some of the top guys could actually figure it out. Hopefully they stick to their respective sports though! No need to master another sports craft at this point
Bro, a regular person could play safely in an nba game until too winded or what not. They literally would not let a regular person play in an nfl game out of fear of legit dying. It is a foul in the nba for touching the shooter shooting. Stop.
I think people don't understand just how big and just freakishly impressive the professional football dudes are. I've met two former NFL players and that was my Jr high principal and Tim Tebow and they were like Greek gods. My old principal looked like a slightly more muscular Carl Weathers with probably an extra 20 lbs Tim Tebow was at my church one time and dude looks like the incredible hulk mid transformation. Dude is sooooooo freaking jacked and pretty damn massive. Those are guys who didn't last 5 years in the league and they are physically intimidating. I've met several NBA guys and while they were pretty cool and all I don't think that they could last in competition against those dudes.
"Yeah, on paper, they're the better team. They have all the assets and resources that we don't. But let us get on the line boy boy, and see if that factors in, cuz I guarantee you, it won't." - -Katt Willams- Austin Rivers (Dreamland, 2024)
New idea to shake up all star weekend and the pro bowl. Let's see nba players in an nfl setting and nfl players can take part in all star/ dunk contest/ 3pt
There might be 30 who could if they really put their mind to it. These athletes know how to put in the work already, mostly have some physical tools that could translate, but they would need to refine certain skills. Lebron COULD be a solid TE, Ant COULD be a sold DB, but they won’t unless they really try. That being said i was struggling to think of 30 that could transition decently in a year. I had to start reaching at 12
On the NFL rule changes being necessary - Yeah. Johnny Unitas was never able to hold a football again after a hit. I've seen an offensive lineman from the 70s and 80s that had to have his LOWER LEG AMPUTATED because of injuries he sustained. Don't get me started on concussions. As for a good comparison on the training needed - Jordan went to play baseball and had to totally redo how he trained. Just when he was improving he went back to basketball and had to rework his training regimen again and it was a year before he was all the way back to where he needed to be. The amount of strength you need in football versus basketball is ridiculous.
Jalen Suggs, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Draymond Green, Kevin Love, and Luke Kennard all played football and were highly ranked when they played. Some even being the best in their state, so you people sitting there saying they wouldn't make it is quite untrue, especially when they were better than some of the NFL players playing currently. Yes, we are not getting 30, but we are getting people. DJ Burns doesn't play football, but he's being chased by an NFL team. Kenny Lofton Jr. can play. Giannis Antetokounmpo (sorry if I butchered the name) can play. Shannon Sharpe himself said on his show that a lot of NBA players would make good tight ends right now with only a couple of weeks of training so why the switch up.
JT Daniels was the number one ranked player in his class and went undrafted. High school means nothing when it comes to the NFL. If those guys chose to stick with football I'm sure they would be great, but just dropping them in the NFL now they wouldn't stand a chance.
I think it makes more sense if you just look at it from a skill perspective (and ignore the right now part). You can find skills in the NBA that are transferable to things such as route running and catching the ball. Nothing in Football is even close to being transferable to shooting and dribbling. So there’s a decent point there. But the difference in physicality is night and day.
Only five players could play in the NFL. 30 NFL players could easily play in the NBA. Look at what Micah parsons, cj stroud and myles garret did in the celebrity games
I would have agreed with Austin Rivers if he said RB or DE, or O-line for some of the big NBA guys but dude said catch and run north and south lol. making it sound like its an easy transition.
I switched to football after 8 years of basketball. The amount of effort and information you need to process is way different than basketball. And you cant have a guy who sits on the ball like iso in football because he get popped. And the physicality of football makes it a team sport in the way the there isnt a single player who can perform all the roles and the tasks of the game
i think most nba players if they chose to play football their whole life could be in the nfl. they’re still incredibly large and athletic people and if they structured their body to the sport they could but yeah saying there’s 30 guys in the nba you could drop in the nfl RIGHT NOW, no.
Random defender guarding AD AD: Daddy, This dude block my shot *The Defender has got charged a foul, has AD went down to free throw line* Random NFL player tackled AD NFL players: Man, get your ass up!
The only position most NBA players could even possibly play in football is QB, and only if they have the perfect offensive line that protected them 100% on every play. Most of the most talented QBs in the NFL are usually fairly lanky and tall so they can see over the defensive line better. Plus, the passing skills would somewhat be transitive, but they'd all have to develop long-ball passing mechanics. Maybe kicker as well for similar reasons, though there isn't really a transitive skill set with that.
