This was extremely helpful. I figured it was something in the safety switch, whether at the shifter or in the column, but this WORKED. 2017 Canyon w/37,000 miles. Started doing this a month ago but rarely. Then this week it started to play for keeps and didn't want to let go of the key AT ALL this morning. I got it out with your tip!

I just want to say thank you so much. I can't explain to you the struggles I have gone through. Currently without a driver side window because my key would get stick so I'd leave it and lock my doors. Well I came back to a broken window. It really worked! I left my key in over night and drained my battery and luckily I had warranty on it so I replaced it for free but your tip about letting the shifter pop twice worked!! Thank you for the help!!
2018 Canyon. Same problem. Dealer service department claimed to be clueless and then said I would need to replace a sensor for $695. Thanks for the video!

Literally SIS. Sitting in my car at 3 am, just got off work.. ve had my car back for 1 week after spending 1G $ (1000 US) to replace Body Control Module. Homie mechanic prevoiusly trouble shooted shift solenoid which is part of an ENTIRELY NEW SHiFTER which I dont think I even needed BUT could ONLY purchase from dealership to find out it was the BODY CONTROL MODULE that of course can only be programmed by the dealer. Which, they did but through the rabbit hole I learned they're also connected to the keyfob and the alarm system and they gladly took my 1G without mentioning that I may need to reset BOTH keyfobs to align with the key/ lock/ ignition sytem Which is why I found you in the first place.I do believe it was the sound of your voice that coached me to a very much welcomed and simple fix. Thank you. ❤ Hearing a voice that sounds like mine helped mitigate the anxiety that might normally sabotage thr solution. I dont follow recipes or instructions but I literally solved my immediate issue in your first 2, succint steps. Ive endured 3 weeks of mansplaining just to arrive at 1 of 3 scenariosI already identified- one of which was THE FIX. Lesson here is always 1) follow your gut, and with newer cars, 2)expertise ( Esp. electrical) trumps speculation 3)ask as many questions as you need to aid in your understanding.

Thanks for your advice. I have seen two different repairs for this problem. One is that the signal from the "Park" switch in the shifter handle is not opening, therefore not de-energizing the solenoid in the ignition mechanism. So there may be two different problems causing the key not to release. So it means that the solenoid has to be electrically de-energized to release the key, (however it can mechanically stick due to a weak release spring), therefore not releasing the key lock. If the shifter switch is not opening in "park," then power, (voltage), will still be energizing the solenoid. Therefore it can be an electrical or mechanical problem,. Or possibly both. I'll hopefully know tomorrow when I take it in to have the ignition switch mechanism replaced for over $300. Lubrication is always a good start! Thanks so much for the video!

Ty for your video just got back from the dealer so I saw this too late to try it.they replaced the shifter it was about $650 but my deductible was 100. I'm sure if I didn't have a warranty I would have looked up your video sooner

Thanks for the quick tip! Can confirm doing a couple of quick release pops on the shifter trigger worked! Much easier and faster than turning key back to on, shifting to N and back to Park in a hard motion (which sometimes didn’t even work). Curious about the lubricant too; If that’s a more permanent solution, will try that next. Either way, much safer and faster solution than the other vids I saw where they disconnected the power to the solenoid. Cheers!
Wow. Your amazing. It worked. And you are so right about Dealer. I hate the fact engineer's know the year to year same problems but don't make the changes. 2021 CANYON AND YHIS PROBLEM GOES BACK TO 2015. 😢
WD 40 WORKS also, to remove that extra grease build up around springs.. put in shifter cracks and inside the key ignition holes.. more good if you can open steering wheel columns and spray directly on the key ignition mechanics spring. I have 2017 colorado same issue and it works. Dealership dumb ass guys told me they never heard this kind of issue and suggested me to change whole center console. Costing me $1200. 😅
You have to replace the shifter assembly that’s the only real way to fix. I did and it’s better for now (currently 3 months). Now this new one may revert back at some point in time. The dealer is dumb about the problem like you said. However, You can tell them you want the shifter assembly. Gear shift knob won’t fix it. Your tips are helpful and do work. I’ve done them. Pulling the power cable from the thingy is scary but works. I did it for a few months and kept getting out of my car without putting it in park. Car would move, lol nobody was harmed.
Lol glad no one was hurt. Mine is still working great, don't even have to flick the button anymore. But if it starts getting stuck again, gear shift assembly replacement will be my next step.
Park positioning switch changes cost $ 70 i guess just change yourself or try to open steering column cover and shifter to spray WD 40 directly and remove the extra grease build up on springs.
Gear shift from Buick looks better but doesn't fix the issue. The issue comes and goes. You think it is fixed, but then here it comes again 2-3 months later. Only true fix I have is to drill the 1 inch hole and tap the piston on the ignition when it gets stuck. Shame on GM for not recalling and fixing the issue.
Does the truck need to be in drive or in park when you flick it? My husband and I have been dealing with this issue for months and it's driving us crazy. I just came across your video and it, plus all the comments gave me such hope, but I went outside and the trick didn't work. Admittedly, I didn't do the WD40 because I don't have any. We have an appointment with the dealership in a week. They made it seem like they were aware of the issue. I hope they don't mess around with us. I think we're going to have to disconnect the battery tonight because the keys are stuck in there right now and I don't want it to die.
I'm so sorry it's not working for you. I put my truck in park, turn off the engine, and pull the key out. If the key does not come out, I leave it and then flick the button and then try to pull it out again. It may take more than one flick. I hope that it works and you don't end up having to disconnect your battery. Good luck and please let me know if you have any more questions.
I haven't had to do it in months, but I believe that when I try to get the key out and it's stuck I just leave it where it is then click and pull it out. You can also turn the key back on, but not far enough to restart the car and then click. I believe they both work. Next time it happens to me I'll pay attention and let you know.
If you have tilt steering in park with it running put the steering wheel up with a slight bump lock it down turn the key off and take it out.Thats how I do it the lock cylinder under the plastic cover is sticking because the batch GM used are faulty but they won't admit .
Yeah GM and the GM dealerships are a bunch of sleazebags! I had my Colorado in for the same key stuck in the ignition issue last year still under warranty and they play dumb and they treat the customer like they are idiots. The dealership had my truck for 5 days and they couldn't duplicate the problem so wouldn't fix it, BS! Fast forward 8 months later in for a oil change at the stealership then the key got stuck in ignition in the shop and now they willing to fix for $900 after warranty expired. I made scene and told dealership to shove it then the customer next to me spoke up had the same ignition issue in his Chevy Equinox. They didn't charge me for my oil change, they just wanted to get rid of me lol. My truck if the key does get stuck I found that if I wait anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds I can hear a click come from the ignition then I can pull the key out.
Birdlegs- OMG!!! I literally went though this exact same situation with my local STEALERSHIP I am out pocket over $600 and issue was never fixed service manager actually told me to use and spray graphite on the key to fix the problem after I spent the time and money fast forward the issue is the locking solenoid switch removed the wiring harness to bypass the issue problem solved found video on RU-vid stress relieved.
This issue is annoying i Dont think I’ll trust another chevrolet. I pull up to locations and im first in line but because i cant get my key out someone else takes my spot soooo annoying
You will waste your money replacing the Gearshift, a spring or anything "mechanical" Your problem is "electrical" Replace the Park electrical switch if anything ... the Contacts for the cicuit on the Switch are probably worn out by now ... a $50 part
