I can think of some things, tapestry crochet, amigurumi where you have to sew a lot, most items of clothing

In general, anything that takes more than an hour or has anything to do with stitches that aren’t sc, st, and doc you should stay away from in the first few projects lol

A big part of sustainable living is figuring out what you can realistically make in a certain amount of time, so that you're not just buying unnecessarily. Planning projects and then buying the items to make it rather than buying a lot of yarn and then seeing what projects you can potentially make with is much more sustainable both financially and environmentally.

THATS TRUE i need to be conscious in my yarn purchases

environmentalist here! great video, i think you shared a lot of fun ideas ! that said, be careful that you’re not equating making something with sustainability. making your own sweaters is super fun and dandy, (i love wearing my crochet clothes out for people to see!!) but if you’re buying a ton of yarn AND new clothes often, you’re actually increasing your consumption. the goals of sustainability are generally to reduce your consumption and use what you already have. i liked your idea of the soap holders and the reusable swiffer covers a lot, i feel like you can certainly complete those in less than 1 skein and use the leftover yarn to make something else! some of the ideas , however, i’m not entirely sold on. i don’t know what the purpose of a towel ring is , and i can’t see myself making a cleaning product specifically for my blinds unless i have scrap yarn. i was personally kind of hoping this video would go over how to find thrifted yarn, projects you can make with scrap yarn, or crochet products by environmentally conscious brands ! i’m also pretty new to crochet so i don’t yet know what kinds of yarn are generally more environmentally friendly! this video is honestly really good and i appreciate the research you put into this, but personally i would swap out “sustainable living” for “household products”, because it seems to me that that’s more of what you’re going for. no hate intended, just sharing from the perspective of someone who intentionally buys less and pursues a sustainable lifestyle!

If you're making Swiffer-type items, acrylic is really the best thing to use...especially if you already have it. Acrylic will last AND because it's plastic-y, it will create static as you use it to keep the dust trapped. I made a loopy set for my floors over a decade ago and it's still going strong.
@angelm33
@angelm33 Год назад
a soap saver is actually intended for soap scraps! you use a bar of soap until it's too small to use anymore and then you put the little scrap in and you keep doing that until it's decently full and you use the whole thing and it prevents you from wasting the soap scraps

Even MORE sustainable observations for the stuff in this list: BATHROOM make your loofahs out of acrylic yarn so they will create more static (which holds the foam in place) and wash better. If you need something rougher, buy a piece of luffa plant. Cotton rounds are a lot of work for little payoff and washing them wastes water. Get unwoven cotton balls and split them into the bit you need instead, they are already biodegradable and not mixed with any plastic fabrics. Soap savers are for soap scraps! Put your scraps in them to use the entire soap up. Or just do what I always did and squish the scrap into the new bar while wet, then leave to dry so they merge together. KITCHEN Scrubbies are the best! But if you're a dish brush person, try bamboo brushes. If want something just like a sponge, try 100% plant fiber sponges with coconout fiber for the rough side. It's also compostable! There's eco dishwashing options for everyone under the sun! If you have bottles where a scrubby wouldn't fit, put in coarse salt and soapy water, close and shake. CLEANING SUPPLIES As someone without a swiffer, what you can always do is use a floorcloth (or old shirt) wrapped around a squeegee. MISC Sewing doll clothes is also 10/10! Your cats will lose their minds with the cardboard box your yarn came in or a dead insect, I would say don't waste your time. Making a thing that won't be touched or used is a waste of yarn and very much unsustainable. That's it! I know this is more of an eco-friendly than crochet-friendly list but I think it's always good to put sustainability above crafting. Maybe you will crochet less stuff, but if these suggestions get you into being more sustainable, that's worth it!

The soap saver will also eliminate the gooey soap goo that gets on the soap holder. I hate cleaning that part of the shower. I only use shower gel because of this. I think I will make one and try this out!
@GumbiiGrows

i've seen people make soap savers but with 100% wool... they then rinse them out in hot water, and it tightens the weave making the soap permanently trapped in there... like, it gets felted together... they're great for exfoliating, since wool is a bit scratchy, but not that bad... but soon i'll make some cotton ones for my dr squach bars... because they suck so bad... they run out so fast, and when they're thin, they're impossible to use... LOL... i think a cotton crochet or knit sock would be perfect for them... thanks for the idea...

okay so heres a bonus one for everyone, this has no pattern but tbh its a simple circle. get one skein of your favorite washcloth cotton yarn and one skein of the scrubby (not the one thats mixed with cotton, just the full scrubby part) double them up together and make a circle 3xs around, you will NEVER use those nasty ass sponges again for your dishes. I have legit HAUNDREDS of these in my house and I NEVER use sponged (unless its for the bathroom. Just toss them in the wash with your towels and reuse forever! I love them sm

Acrylic yarn would actually be great for some of the scrubby stuff. I was listening to a fashion designer talk about the textile industry. And basically, synthetic fibers will not degrade in one lifetime. Which means that they last for longer. So if they end up in a landfill it's not great. But if we're talking about replacing a loofah: using acrylic yarn to make it would actually be better because you could just have that same loofah for the rest of your life. The designer was talking about why she chose to make all of the clothing that she creates out of synthetic fibers. And it's because she's had a lot of the same clothes since she was a kid cuz her size hasn't changed much and she has a lot of things that have become threadbare because they are made with natural fibers where is the clothing that she has ever made a synthetic fibers are still hanging in there and when she no longer needs them she can donate or sell them and then they're on the second hand market and they can be recycled many more times than smthg made of a natural fiber.

I think sustainability didn’t really come through in this video - to me, the most important thing is to not make things you don’t need, not buy what you won’t use, and use what you have. I know this is super hard as a creator, especially if you look at it from this perspective. Why make 2 more plushies if a million already exist? I hope you get what I mean. Like, how many of these do I actually need that can’t be done with a rag, possibly cut from an old shirt I have already at home I get that it was probably super hard to find 30 ideas already, but some really felt like those “amazon must haves” that no one has actually any need for. I think we need to shift our mindsets from “how much I can create” to “how can I use this purposefully” - to me, people crocheting 50 sweaters per year isn’t sustainable either, what do you need 50 sweaters for? I feel like sustainability is less about creating and more about improvisation and using what’s available.
