I tried to make this 10 tips but I couldn't narrow it down 😂 So here's a HUGE list of ride or die tips / hacks / secrets I use while thrifting because I often get asked what thrift store I go to. I really don't think it's the thrift store, it's the mindset 🧠 and all these tips I'm about to share. I have to add my favorite tip, because it's coming up soon. Find the store closest to your nearest international university. They are loaded with furniture when the semester ends (go early May) it is a lot of ikea, which is fine, but you'd be surprised at the cool pieces students took from their parents and donated once they moved out of their dorms.

Heck, I used to live near Harvard U and I'd find great stuff free curbside in May on garbage night. One year, all from the same apartment block, I found a good dresser, a brand new in the package set of beige sheets (queen), a framed photo of Fenway Park signed by a player, and a very large framed photo of the Beatles 💖 from their 1965 Rubber Soul era.

I am 63 years young and grew up in Oregon and have thrift shopped and garage sale or flea market shopped all my life for mostly all my home goods and 99% of my clothing, I am so glad younger people are doing this again. If more people will thrift shop, then we can increase that percentage of things purchased in thrift compared to the amounts that were donated. America is immensely blessed to have sooo much material goods available secondhand. It truly is the most ecological choice to buy secondhand. A wonderful side note is all the money my husband and I have saved over the last 43 years of our marriage. All the money saved is now available to us in our retirement for recreation, trips and philanthropy.

Same age, same thing; I always shop secondhand first (except for underwear😉). Even if I have to shop online resale, it’s always secondhand first. I’m rarely disappointed & find far more interesting choices! High five ✋ to us! 😃

I've lived in Oregon all my life too (I'm 65) and have found a lot of great thrift items. One thing we aren't lucky to have is "antiques" in the quantity, quality, and low prices of other parts of the country. Not sure why that is ... maybe because the left coast is "newer" than the midwest, south and east where the bargains seem to dwell, but if you look, you can find a lot of great stuff.

@@pupawheelie - In NYS we never paid sales tax on thrifted items until maybe the past 10-15 years. it’s insane to pay tax twice & if you resell an item you pay it again! Triple tax, ugh 😣!

I have to admit I kind of consider myself a thrifting expert (lol) but this was excellent. Agree with all of it 100% The only thing I always tell people (and may have missed in this video) is DO NOT feel like you must buy something when you go thrifting. I live in a small city w/ a lot of great thrift options but there are days when I come home empty handed or with one $2 picture frame and that's ok. Better to only buy stuff you KNOW you're going to use, wear, or repurpose than to just buy random items.

Another tip to add: find a thrift store with a mission you can support with your donations and purchases! I work at a thrift store that funds a free comprehensive program for women coming out of addiction. Any thrift store is providing recycling (for some items at least), jobs, and savings for the community, but there are lots that are going beyond that and using profits to benefit your community.

I agree. The weird non-profit shops usually/often have better pricing than Goodwill or Savers here in the States. Arizona Humane Society had some awesome finds the other day. Shops that support womans domestic violence shelters is another good place to support. The catholic charity shops are better priced as well. They have a HUGE behind-the-scenes support structure for the general population in all sorts of ways.

Yes!!! Our local thrift store provides free clothing to local school kids who are on free or reduced lunches, as well as to individuals living in the homeless shelter or battered women's shelter. I love to support them with my donations because they are truly giving back to the community. Plus, I've seen the cars the owners drive, and they are definitely not millionaires, unlike the many CEOs of Goodwill, who all make 500k to $1m per year.

We have a Mission Thrift Store and it caters to the more affluent shopper. Their prices are too high. Example most of their jigsaw puzzles are 10.00 each. Not worth it. So I wonder just who are these THRIFT stores wanting for customers? I see a lot of high end vehicles in their parking lots! Not to mention resellers. Doesn’t leave much for the people in lower income groups! Books are another thing. Promote reading and re donating. Stop pricing books so high that you think you have to keep it to get your money out of it. Books can be sold a lot of times if you set up some kind of credit program. Get creative. Let’s face it the author only gets royalties the first time it’s sold so they get no benefit from it being resold but the Thrift Stores are trying to make a killing off them. When I go into a Thrift Store I have a good idea how much I want to spend and often I’ll pick up something, walk around with it, put it back and leave with nothing. I say to the Thrift Store gods when I walk in, ok impress me today. What do you have that I can’t live without? Often it’s nothing. That’s a good day IMO.

There is a thrift shop in this area that is also a shelter for unhoused people that also serves one or more meals a day to hungry people. Very nice place!

Another tip - some alterations are REALLY easy to do. If you find a cardigan you like, but hate the buttons? Buttons are super easy to swap out! And you can even find other buttons in the sewing/craft section of the thrift store! Don't love the colour of a dress? Dye it! Need a shorter hem? Hemming is really easy to learn and do! Even if something isn't quite perfect, there's some really easy ways to flip things to make them your own

Thank you for these tips! Just a note, Rayon does not contain plastic. Rayon (aka viscose, tencel, bamboo, lyocell, modal) are synthetic fabrics made from plants-they do use a chemical process, but they do not contain plastic, so cannot shed microplastics. They do shed microfibers.

She also listed fleece and that is a type of fabric but not a fabric content. It can be fleece and be polyester, wool, cotton, or some combination of things. Of course she meant polyester fleece but she already said polyester so that is redundant.

Correct, though the final product cannot be called 'natural' in any sense and still has an effect on the environment, not to mention the fact that the process of making those synthetic fibres is incredibly resource and water intensive and is very 'dirty'. Natural products may be the beginning of the process, but what comes out at the end is not a natural fibre

⁠⁠⁠⁠@@ShanW-ri2rg I don't know in USA, but here in Italy that's very hard to sell 2nd-hand clothes 😢 Almost impossible... You can sell new (with label) and branded things. People aren’t interested in other things, unless the price and the shipping are very VERY low (almost unreasonable).

YES! In this economy, I like thrifting for the environmental side of it, but be aware that for many people, this is their only way to dress themselves and still be able to buy grocery.

The men’s section is such a good place to find high quality wool sweaters. I have also bought a purse at the thrift store with a $50 in it. The purse had so many sections it took me months to find it but huge bonus. That $50 covered many future thrift trips. I continue to live in hope of another one.

I tried on a blazer one day at Deseret Industries. I reached in the pocket & felt some paper. I cringed a little expecting it to be someone's old used Kleenex. However, when I pulled it out, I saw that it was a wad of money. I didn't stop to count it, I just bought the jacket, even though it was too large for me. When I got to my car I investigated more closely. There was a WAMU bank receipt, $300 in cash and a ring. I went to Chase bank who has purchased Washington Mutual, and asked if anything on the receipt indicated the customer's account information. NO, there wasn't any way to find the owner going that route. I called DI and asked if anyone had reported accidentally donating money or jewelry? No on that too. I took the ring to a jeweler who confirmed that it was a real diamond. Her offered me $200, which I took. Because the blazer didn't fit and wasn't something I wanted to restyle I redonated it. My best ever thrifting story.

If there’s no dressing room to try on pants or shorts at thrift stores, find a stretchy long skirt with elastic waist band. Put it over your current pants then take them off and try on thrift store finds underneath the skirt and then remove the skirt to see how the thrift store finds look. I’ve been doing this since a kid and it’s much easier to make sure the fit is correct instead of trying over leggings.

Im 54 and have been avidly thrifting since my childhood...... My best advice is to go often. The more you go the better you get at it. I don't even have to try anything on at this point; I can eyeball most everything and can tell from another isle if something is silk, leather or cashmere. Thrifting is a skill. 😉🙌🏻You don't have to buy every time you go but you need to train yourself to find the good stuff.

I am a long time thrifter also. There have been many times I have left the store empty handed, yet not discouraged. I know that in future shopping trips I will finds goodies just right for me. I am not in a hurry.

It's worth being patient and only getting what really fits well and looks good otherwise it's easy to end up with a wardrobe full of not quite right clothes.

I only buy high end at thrift stores. Another place to shop is Facebook market place. Far anybody with interest in antique China sets. They are now at bottom out prices. Beautiful complete sets you will see on market place far like under a hundred dollars. Also real wood furniture whole bedroom sets far around 3 to 4 hundred dollars, also dining room furniture far like 2 hundred dollars, most are older furniture, but are well made, back when furniture would last farever. the older furniture is made better than any you could find that is new in stores.

Such great tips!! I have a tip for the plant parents! Look for metal, glass or pottery trays/dishes to replace plastic water catching trays for under your plants. It looks so much better than dirty plastic trays and I’ve found SO many different sizes almost all my plants big or small have thrifted trays/dishes under them!

omigoddd yess!!!! I have been doing this over the past several years and now all of my plant babies have their own glass pyrex dish:) Perfect for the dishes in the kitchen section that no one wants because they have a spot of baked-on stuff in the middle or are missing a lid. Also so easy to clean! Whenever I notice a dish looking gross, I can just pop it into the dishwasher.

I'm a fairly experienced thrifter and I second all of these!! I love that she mentioned placeholder pieces; I just replaced 4 placeholder chairs with 4 that matched 2 other (thrifted!) chairs that I already had! I would add to this to check with your store about their furniture pickup window if you're buying a large piece. Many places give you 24 hours to pick it up. Also, never buy a belt new. So many belts are cheap bonded leather. I have found many designer belts (Coach, RL) at thrift stores. Definitely learn how to tell quality leather from crap - it will help you find great belts, bags, and jackets!

The placeholder piece idea!! I never heard of that! I moved and need a cupboard or credenza or any storage piece and my new home is unmanageable b/c I keep hunting for the perfect piece! I will do this, buy a placeholder piece , and then keep hunting for the perfect piece. Thank you!!!

Belts!!! Right. This is where you get real leather. Also men's belts are often better made than women's. It can be hard to remember that in a regular store where things are scattered all over but often thrift stores just put all the belts together.

Sheets can be lovely fabric! And curtains are sometimes silk! I’ve made coats out of bedspreads, circle skirts out of round tablecloths, all sorts of things, and those heavy fabrics are often Pricey if you buy new yardage at Joann or something.

I started my second-hand only clothing journey the same time you did!! :) My rule now is that I have to have ACTIVELY tried to find a piece I want second-hand for 6 months before I consider purchasing new (sometimes purchasing is needed for us curvy girls). Honestly patience is key - want new white sneakers and the thrift store doesn't have any? Come back next week and they will!

As a sewist and quilter, I stopped buying new fabric, which is extremely expensive, and started buying 100% cotton men's shirts, flat bedsheets and duvet covers, and vintage fabric. I found that I am having a whole lot more fun both shopping for the fabric and even making my quilts is more fun now! I embrace the holes, thread bare areas, and even stains. I incorporate them into my pieces and enjoy thinking of them getting a second life and of the people who wore them before I recreated the fabric into something new. For stains I either cut the stain out or I embroider or applique over it, turning the area into a unique design idea. Great video! Thanks for the tips!

The thrift store supplied MOST of my wedding! A lil thing I did was buy a bunch of 4x6 or 5x7 frames to use as table numbers. Then after the wedding, I filled them with pictures to give to family memebers! So they got reused twice!

This is the BEST How to Thrift video I have seen. I sometimes go away empty handed, but rather than being frustrated I didn't find what I was looking for, I think of it as visiting a museum, or going on a treasure hunt. The joy is in the journey.

@@loisen I agree. Sometimes I find beautiful pieces that don't fit me. I like the idea that someone else will find that item, it will be a perfect fit and make their day. Meanwhile I'll find something great for me another day. Its also fun to wonder who ends up buying what we donate, ie maybe someone returning to work will find a suit jacket I've donated and it will help them look and feel good and get the job.

exactly!! I go home empty handed probably 3/10 thrift trips. I think the key is to go often & view it as an adventure, it pays off in the long run for sure. Some of my friends go to 1 thrift store every 6 months and say "Welp I didn't find the perfect brown overalls so I hate thrifting" haha

Great tips! Another tip: throw any clothes, bedding, material you buy straight into the dryer (dry but with tags removed) with a nice smelling eco-brand dryer sheet (or wool balls with some essential oil) for an hour on medium heat. Because the fabric is dry, it works with dry-clean only stuff and won't shrink anything but it gets rid of smells and the teeny tiny chance of bedbugs or moths.

Great idea. For washables, adding a cup of plain white vinegar to the washing machine along with the detergent is great for removing odors, and cheap. You won't end up smelling like a salad, I promise, and you won't smell like perfume either.

as someone who works in a thrift store... you should probably just straight up wash it. the amount of customers i watch cough directly on the racks of clothes every day? you would not believe it.

AGREED! I thrifted for over 35 years before I got bedbugs, but boy... What a NIGHTMARE! Sadly, I've had to become an expert on bedbug biology, breeding & feeding habits. Here's a summation: Heat kills adults, larvae & eggs. 120 degrees for 20 minutes, but always go longer. If there's any crevice where they can hide from the heat they will. Tip: for things that can't be washed or thrown in the dryer, if they are small enough I use a super-low oven. Put the items in & set it to the lowest setting. My oven's lowest is 170. When it beeps to let me know it's reached that, I turn it off. Between the preheat & cooling back down, it's at 120 long enough to kill anything on there. Of course, you have to keep a careful eye on your items if there's any chance they'll melt! You can turn a closet into a heat chamber, using a radiant heater, but you need to put down Cimexa powder across the opening or they might escape the heat treatment. You can also use Cimexa powder to isolate items & starve out the bugs, but it takes at least a couple of months & isn't as certain as heat. If you do this, do it in a bedroom so they are certain to come out at night to try to get to you or it won't work. They have to cross the desert of powder to die. For furniture, I put Cimexa in dry, clean cat food cans and stick one under each leg. Bugs die if they cross that desert of powder. Finally, I once ended up with bedbugs in my Toyota van, too. On a hot summer day, I plugged in a radiant heater & let it superheat in the blasting sun. Never had another bite in the van.

I’ve stopped buying new for environmental reasons and it makes shopping much better - at new stores, I’m not at all tempted to buy but can really enjoy the browsing, and at thrift stores, I love the thrill of the hunt and getting unexpected variations of the things I’m looking for. Thrifting is way more fun than buying new.

I wanted jeans with real pockets and my husband was like, " Just shop in the men's section". Not only did I get real pockets, but they fit so nice and because the way they size them leads to consistency I could just pick up two more in that size without it being so questionable as to whether or not they fit.

I still highly encourage bringing a soft tape measure. I work in a vintage shop and we take Levi's from any decade, even modern ones, and it's my job to measure the waist and length because they can stretch out or shrink over time, so.etimes up to 3 inches difference

I would add that this is true even if you are familiar with the brand’s current sizing. Brands change their pattern blocks over the decades.

Love this. I have been thrifting since I was a teenager in the 80s. I like that you talked about sustainability and how much clothing waste we have going on. I also love sewing, so I like to look through the linens and even at clothing to refashion. It's very fun and can be a lower stakes way to get started with sewing if that's something you are interested in trying out.

I learned this from a fashion stylist on RU-vid shorts. An item that has a smell can sometimes be rescued by a banana. Put the item/items in a plastic bag with a yellow banana for a day or two. Don't forget about it because you don't want mold. Bonus related tip, I like to keep a lush bath bomb in the closet, especially linen closet, and they will smell like the bath bomb instead of stale clean clothes. Get a seasonal one to remember how old it is.

Kelsey, you covered it all! I alwaysss wear leggings and a tank/tight tshirt when I go thrifting because it's so helpful to try stuff on over skintight clothing...so glad you included that! Im addition to a list and measuring tape, I also always bring a granola bar, water, hand sanitizer and a mask too because thrifting is a journey and you need to be prepared. Oh, and my own bags :)

Hi, I know your video is a year old but I’m just now seeing it, and if you don’t happen to have a tape measure on you, you can fit the waistband with the button closed from your wrist to your elbow and that’s your waist, works every time for me. Hope that helps.

I'm glad you found that great bargain! Savers (Unique) prices in the Washington, DC area have gone through the roof. They were always high, but now they're just nuts. Items from the Dollar Tree currently available new for $1.25 are priced at $9.99! Long sleeve blouses from discount stores start at $8.99. Shoes range from $9.99-19.99, and many of them are worn out. It has finally saved me money, since I no longer go there. Also, I dislike that it's a for-profit store that only pays Special Olympics a small fee each year, so Savers has the appearance of being a non-profit. Yuck!

I'm surprised to hear that Savers prices are too high elsewhere. Here in Massachusetts they're still great. I usually have a 20% off coupon for donating (I try to donate something every time I shop, to avoid clutter), or I go on the 50+ senior discount day for 30% off. I don't need to buy bags because I always bring my own. I don't find self checkout a hassle at all. And there usually is one person who will check you out there. I'm always finding amazing bargains! I'd rather buy secondhand than new. Reduce reuse recycle! It definitely saves me money. My friends call me the thrift queen.

Viscose isn't "good" for the environment since sulfuric acid is often used for it's production and it can be released when it's decomposing but it doesn't release microplastic since it's made out of tree fibers not petroleum. That's also true for rayon since it's just another name for viscose.

Well, as with all things, its not that simple. It depends on how the viscose was produced. There are methods of producing it that does not require such harsh/toxic chemicals and results in very little end waste.

The placeholder hack was a game changer for me when I moved in January! My lease with my bestie was ending, and most of the kitchen stuff in our house together was hers, but my new house wasn't available for 2 months, so I was doing a temporary 2 months in another apartment during the in-between, and I went out and thrifted a couple plates, cutlery, a few pots, a hot plate, JARS instead of cups so i could use them as both, and that way I was able to take my time picking out stuff that would go in the new new house!

I only took one year off from thrifting, March 2020-March 2021. Then I went back, but maybe only once or twice a month rather than once or twice a week. I just wore a mask. Used hand sanitizer as soon as I got in the car. Put any clothes I bought in the wash right away, then washed my hands really well. Now I'm back to once a week, and I still do all that protocol.

You forgot two important thrifting tips! 1- if you’re looking at something and you’re not sure if you’re going to get it or not, put it in your cart and think about it. if you leave it on the shelf someone else could pick it up and then you’ll be out of luck. You can always change your mind and put it back or give it to the clerk, but you can’t get it back once it’s gone. And most importantly number 2- always check for bedbugs! This is especially important on things like stuffed animals, pockets inside of purses, pockets on clothing, or on upholstered items. Most thrift stores should already be checking for this, but if they miss some thing and you wind up with bedbugs they are expensive and difficult to get rid of. You can look up what to look for online but generally you’re looking for tiny bugs or brown bits along the seam or corners of an item or inside pockets. Better safe than sorry. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve never had a problem and I have never actually found anything like that in all my years of thrifting, but I am always 100% sure to check before bringing something in my house. Can’t be too careful.

Loved this one! I just went thrifting today and got a great blazer and jewelry. Two pairs of silver earrings for $4 each! BTW, rayon is a natural fabric. It's made from wood pulp/cellulose. It doesn't release microplastics. :)

I've heard it referred to as "semi-synthetic." It's made of cellulose, like cotton and linen, so there's no plastic, but there are some pretty nasty chemicals involved in the production process.

No microplastics in rayon/viscose. It is made of processed cellulose fiber (like wood and other natural products). It actually makes quite a lovely fabric with a nice drape and does not have that plastic-y feel that polyesters and acrylics can have.

This is my first time seeing you, but I think you’re my thrifting soulmate. Every single one of these…yeah, I do that. 😂 I do all kinds of mixed media art so thrift stores supply me with like 90% of my materials (those coffee table books are SO GREAT for collage art). Also as a former picture framer, I support thrift store frames. Look for ones that have stickers from actual frame shops on the back, because those were probably custom orders and higher quality. And make sure the corners have some sort of nail in them, not just glue and hope lol.

Also, at the beginning of each summer we’d go look for t-shirts, shorts, etc. (they would each get $20 and the treasure hunt was on. Seeing you for the first time, you've got it down! With the renewed interest in thrifting, I'd squeeze in a couple more tips. If you enjoy taking your time, be sure your friends are on the same page. They might be along for the ride but get bored when you're just getting started! So solo shopping can be fun too. Also along with wearing clothes you can layer over for try-ons (great tip, btw!), be sure to wear an outfit you aren't worried about getting dirty. Thrifting is my sport, whether I'm crawling through record crates or clothing- take an allergy pill, throw some wipes in your car, the grime means you did it right! Lastly, have what you're looking for in mind BUT, be open to super finds completely outside what you stopped in searching for. Just like in a retail store- you know you need a swimsuit let's say, but if you come across a mint, gorgeous vintage wool coat, snag it off season, and clean and store it. I thought I was done- sorry, one more, with this resurgence in more thrifters shopping understand that the stores get that too. Compare pricing in stores within your area to make sure you're actually getting a fair deal. Have fun shopping, I just subscribed:)

GUUURRRLLLL.... you hit EVERY nail on the head. I love it!!! I'm a wife and mom of 4. Three teen girls and a 9 year old boy. I love fashion and dressing the part for every occasion... red and green at Christmas, floral and pastels for Easter, character inspired outfits for themed birthday parties, the occasional front yard tea party, and artistic photo shoots because I'm also a photographer. My whole family gets in on it and it's a ton of fun. If I purchased every outfit new, it would break me. My oldest is going to prom and I even found her gorgeous BRAND NEW prom dress at goodwill for only $4!!!!! I also love to decorate my home, and we just bought an old cottage home that I'm carefully furnishing. Mirrors, baskets, old books, lamps, bedding, art, and even vintage gold frames for an Ancestor gallery wall I'm making, have all recently been purchased for hardly anything. Great tips! Thrift stores in my country are tiny in comparison to the ones ye have in North America, but I use all of those tips nevertheless. Just wanted to add to the shopping list+tape measure tips: if you shop for items you need for specific purposes (like a storage basket on this one particular shelf or a frame for one particular piece of art) keep a note on your phone with the target dimensions. Less chance of bringing home something you won't need.

I love thrifting, you can almost always find something cool and unique. Clothes sometimes are a hit or miss, but it's still fun to check out. One crucial thing to keep in mind, is TIME, make sure you have LOTS of time. Don't be in a rush, take your time especially if you're looking at clothes. Most times you can find items with new tags still attached, but you have to take the time to look closely. Also, thrift stores like a "Mission" thrift store will have higher end clothing items, or stores that specifically help women will have a higher end vibe. Thank you for all the great info Kelsey.

Just a warning, if you're buying wool pieces then check them over closely for holes! You'll usually find them if you try the piece on. I've been burned a couple of times buying gorgeous wool jumpers, only to take them home and find them riddled with holes from clothing moths! So true to always check the mens section too! I've found some seriously good stuff in there in the past.

I don't mind holey cashmere--I'm a metalsmith and there's always a slight risk I'll set my silly ass on fire with the torch when soldering. I like the natural fiber, as it's flame resistant, and provides warmth without being too bulky. We all dress like slobs in the studio anyway 😂

Clothes are really difficult for me to find so I think the men's section would work so well to browse for tee shirts or flannel shirts. I volunteer at a St. Vincent de Paul retail store. Also, ask one of the volunteers if you’re looking for something specific. Because of space limitations, we don’t always have all the merchandise on the floor. I love when someone brings in a picture of a character they are trying to replicate for Halloween.

At the thrift stores I frequent they seem to get a LOT of donations of zippered makeup bags/pouches. I think a lot of makeup/skincare brands give them as freebies when you buy a certain amount. Because there are so many and its kind of a weird specific item, they are usually super cheap ($1-3) and are great for storing small DIY supplies (markers, pens, sewing kit) or other small objects. They come in so many cute, unique patterns which also helps me differentiate what's inside each one. They're typically in the bags/purses section and it's one of my favorite things to look for at the thrift store.

I think I can count on one hand the number of clothing items I have purchased new in the last 8 years. My motto has been thrift first pretty much since I was a kid just because of price. My perspective shifted when I started learning about the unethical warehouse practices that are happening all over the world; especially in regards to the labor force. Unless I absolutely cannot find something similar to what I'm looking for I don't buy anything new. If I do buy new items I try to go with companies that have ethical production practices.

I have only been purchasing slow fashion, or thrifted fashion, since 2019 too! The one holdout I have is under garments, but my goal this year is to switch those to slow fashion as well so they last longer and I have some assurance that they're being made ethically. I also want to work on repurposing fabric better. I have a number of pieces that are either stained/torn/worn to a point where I can't easily mend them, but this is a good reminder that I should actually see what I can make from them instead of just tossing them in a scrap fabric box. About eight years ago, I challenged myself to a “clothing fast” for a year. I bought NO clothes for an entire year. It was an eye opener, and I’m sure I saved a lot of money. Three years ago, I lost a lot of weight, and just didn’t want to spend a fortune buying new clothes. First, I took some of my favorite shirts, and spent time altering them (a task not for the inexperienced). Then I hit the thrift stores, and also watched eBay. There are only a couple brands that I bought, and have built up my wardrobe quite nicely. I watch thrifters and resellers on RU-vid, and have gotten knowledge and tips from them. I like having nice things that I got at bargain prices.

More tips: Wear a tight t-shirt AND a top layer that has a zipper or buttons (a sweater or a jumper). This way you don't have to pull clothing over your head every time you want to try something and you will be able to try most things without taking the t-shirt off. Wear shoes that are easy to take off / put on. If you have patience, check out all sections, including large sizes. I found some of my favourite clothes in the large size section because they were simply oversized and they were placed in a wrong section. If you find something from a good brand and you might love the brand more than the piece itself, try imagining that piece was by a brand you don't really like. Do you still like the piece?

I have to say, i have thrifted some forever 21 clothes that have lasted me YEARS and are some of my favorite pieces! Don’t be afraid of the brand name, just be careful about the quality by thoroughly checking it out.

I consider myself a pro-level thrifter, but I still learned a lot from your terrific video! Usually I am so fried from combing through all the clothes that I don't look at art, pottery, or coffeetable books. Shopping the men's section is a great tip. I can't do that for pants, myself, because I don't have the right build, but it's so helpful for shoes because I have wide, difficult-to-fit feet. And I had no idea many of the plain colored shirts end up in that section!

Thinking outside of the intended use is my favorite. I think it could actually regroup a few tips you mentioned and be a general mantra! (Bed linens as fabric, « men’s » clothes for women, using a printed canvas for your own project, etc.) I discovered recently the pottery section and you are so right: there can be real gems there. I found great ceramics as planters that I could never afford to buy new. Also I like to visit the crafts and office supplies sections. A stapler I such a boring thing to spend money on, right? Amen for everything you said about fabric. ❤

This was an awesome post. I loved all your tips and hacks - the one I resonate the most with (because I do it too) is the canvases. I have bought so many - but recently I've been buying ones from home decor stores where there has been a kids movie theme and no one wants a large (e.g. Marvel) canvas any longer - so they sell them FAR FAR cheaper than their blank canvases!! I have lots of gesso so that I can basically create some abstract textured art without breaking the bank. I might even try and sell them if they turn out alright!! Thanks again guys - so I spired to try put and look for other stuff now. 😊

If you are a petite woman, the kids section (thrifting or NEW) can have great deals😊. A new XL girls rain jacket at REI was Wayyyy cheaper than a Woman’s small. And same for boy’s fleeces.

Another tip. Did you know the circumference of your neck roughly equals your waist size? If you forget your measuring tape, wrap the waist of the pants/skirt around your neck and if it comfortably meets end-to-end (I look for a couple of millimeters overlap), it's most likely to fit.

Men's wear for knits and Ts. Will definitely be checking that out. My tip to you: Antique stores! Pricing on some decor can match the thrift stores while being in better condition or higher quality. I have bought all clothing except socks and foundation garments 2nd hand for 20+ years. Once you start, it is very difficult to even consider purchasing new.

68 years old, still like my blue jeans, wear size 10 jeans, Sometimes take a walk in high end stores to just look, if 75 percent off rack has something I really want will buy, at the end of seasons, But most of what I buy comes from thrifting. No way would I pay over 50 dollars far jeans. Live in Greenville South Carolina. There is a huge thrift store in Malden, one of smaller towns on outskirts of Greenville. Name of it is Kids and More. It has huge variety of higher end clothes far adults and children. The women clothes are separated out in sizes. jeans like size 10 petite, medium, and tall ect so it is easy to find your size. all the tops and pants in petite in one section. This store is clean, no oder at all, well organized, I have quiet often found items that are brand new, Also if items do not sell they have a section where they are marked down, some far just a dollar. bought some summer cloths from that section last time I was there. You can shop this store online also.

This was excellent! Thank you! I’m a (cozy) minimalist who’s also frugal (not cheap…there’s a difference). I also recommend shopping at consignment shops. We’ve gotten several pieces of furniture at significant discount. My favorite is a Stickley end table, for $175. They retail new at around $800. One big sign of quality in clothing is French seams (seams that are enclosed, so no raw edges).
