Our birding challenge continues. We are trying to see 300 birds during 2024 and in this video we brave the awful weather conditions in order to visit Colonel Samuel Smith Park to get eyes on a King Eider duck.
In this video, we visit several locations over the course of the weekend to try to increase our bird count. We also see our first owl of the year. The Long-Eared Owl.
Please like, please subscribe, and stay tuned to the channel as we continue our search for 300 birds.

I'm afraid I must agree that the Scaup at 2:37 is a Greater -- the head is round overall with the peak at the very top of the head. Lesser heads are a bit more angular, with a bump that's shifted toward the back... like the bird's wearing a beret. If raptors prove difficult for you this year, definitely make one or more trips to Hawk Cliff south of London/east of Port Stanley in the fall -- we regularly get 15 species spread across Sept, Oct, and Nov, including Golden Eagles and American Goshawks, along with other interesting non-raptor species. Peace to you both!

No worries, as you probably saw in another comment, I also think it's a Greater Scaup. I bowed to peer pressure instead of sticking with my gut! I'll see if I can get a genuine Lesser soon or straighten out the count in an upcoming vid. Thanks for the tip on Hawk Cliff, just had a quick look on Google. We quite like it down that way, generally.

Amazing footage of that Long-eared Owl. You'll catch up to your goal. Every year is different, but you'll get a burst of birds here soon.

Thanks bud. I think a lot of it is because it's just been very wet and relatively warm during the early part of winter in this area. There's definitely opportunity to do better than last year in certain areas, though.

Great video and well worth the wait! And with a handicap no less. To my eye, that’s still a Greater Scaup near the beginning - head shape gives it away.
@BritHikesOntario
@BritHikesOntario 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Norman, appreciate it. As for the Scaup... well... I agree with you. I was fairly certain it was a Greater. Sara was less confident in that analysis, so I sought further advice and that advice was quite confidently given as Lesser. I remain unconvinced and still believe that it is a Greater Scaup. But I'm going to stick with it for now and when I see a more definitive Lesser, I'll come back to it.

Great video again! So glad you counted that Western Grebe, I was able to see the same bird as I said on an earlier video. I recently found a Long Eared Owl in Guelph! Goodluck on your adventures!

Always amazes me at just how many birds over there are similar if not the same as ones over here. Great vid, stay warm and safe though :)

Hello and congratulations on a nice strong start for your 2024 300 bird challenge! I love your new added editing touches... so impressed! You already create such engaging videos and to continue to go above and beyond is just amazing. I love the new counter in the upper right hand corner - genius! and the 300 'cutout' layer... nice touches... amongst others. I am so sorry to hear about your super telephoto lens breaking! I can't imagine how expensive that must be and how upsetting. Glad you're back and thank you for sharing all these fab sightings with us in spite of your lens setback.

Keep an eye out for cackling geese. Some of those Canada geese in the background look pretty small.

Thanks! We're trying to bear them in mind when we see Canada Geese. Cackling is a goose we didn't manage to see last year, so it would be good to get it this time around.

Wow what a great uptick in the quality of the video production. You and Sarah are doing an excellent job with your presentations and I looks forward to each weeks release. I’m glad to see you didn’t mention the location of the LEO as l understand some people have been pestering them. Oh, by the way, what lens did you replace the 200-500 with I didn’t see it mentioned? Keep up the good.
@BritHikesOntario
@BritHikesOntario 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for noticing, Keith 👍 I worry a little about those owls, but, having said that, they seem to be doing okay population wise in that area. I replaced the lens with the same one. I was somewhat tempted to wait for the 180-600 Z-mount to become available. But... then I'd be without a lens for a month (or longer, knowing Nikon) and the extra ~$400 would be stretching things for me.

Congrats on braving this beastly weather to get these shots -- and long-eared owls! Amazing. Tip: if you're downtown some day, the peregrine falcons are in residence at their nest at King and Victoria Streets, and not hard to see (and often hear too).
@BritHikesOntario
@BritHikesOntario 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the tip, might have to go looking for some urban ones if we don't have much look with Peregrines.
