Daryl brought us his Landspeed Firebird project for us to tune up on the KSR chassis dyno. After struggling to keep the tires hooked up on another dyno and changing to a TH400 transmission, he called us up for some tuning help and we went to work! Check out some of the cool tricks of a landspeed car as Daryl sets out to reach his goal of 300mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats!!
Do you need welding supplies or welding equipment?? Go to www.USAweld.com and use the discount code "WinWithKSR" at checkout for a 5% discount on your order!!

For those curious about the letter designations on the door. AA is the engine size which in this case is 501 cubic inches and up. It is the largest displacement class. BG is the power adder / fuel category which in this case is Blown Gas. ALT is the car class which in this case is Altered Coupe.

Kevin, you DEFINITELY want to run at Bonneville. Buddy of mine (RIP) and I ran our old road racing BMW 2002 from 2007-2009 and set a record for fastest 2002 (131.787 mph). We then went back with a Honda 750 modified frame bike I built. We had teething problems the first year 2012 and before heading back, my friend passed away. Speedweek is THE best racing participant event anywhere.

Kevin, a few more things... we call the salt "the White Dyno" for reasons you are already aware of. Another thing, SCTA-BNI tech line is the most thorough tech inspection you will ever find. Our first year, it took us three trips and nearly 8 hours total to get through tech. Their safety standards are WAY different than road racing, i.e. full door nets, arm straps in a full bodied car, etc. All good. You would LOVE IT.

Kev an absolute legend and like a few in his class of knowledge are willing to film and share some, just a tiny bit, even a crumb of his racing/tuning/building knowledge is so much appreciated. The vastness of RU-vid is entertainment and while this is entertaining it’s also free knowledge and tips from an absolute legend in almost every type of racing. “Back in my day” you’d have to hunt around 15 different machine shops, carb shops and performance shops to find a guy willing to show you what/why/when and where to solve issues and make things better. There’s a few of you guys out there and your all unsung hero’s in my book.

@@KSRPerformanceFabrication what is going on with that Nova on the lift directly beside the dyno? I hope to see a video on it very soon as my Dad and I built our own 72 Nova which is the same body style that that one is and we had a .030 over 350cid so 355cid N/A for the longest time when we bracket raced it and it was a a small tire car on 28x10.5 slick and with no catastrophic failures and never having to pull the engine out it ran high 10s in the 1/4 for close to 15 years and it was all steel all glass and it weighed exactly 3000lbs with a 230lbs driver but now it's been mini tubbed so we can run a little bit bigger tire if we want to and a fab9 with a 4link suspension out back and tubular a-arms and disc brakes all the way around and we lightened the car up some more and put a bigger small block in it we started with an aluminum block 400cid with 400 mains and bumped it up to a 434cid and it's still a 28x10.5 car and it runs very low 5s in the 8th with a baby shot of nitrous on it so yea if you can feature that Nova in a video like maybe a dyno video or just of you guys working on it and you tell us about it if you can that would be great and we have a big tire big block 84 Oldsmobile the bigger body style of the one you got and it's the 4 eyed version so kind of similar to yours and if you'd like for me to tell you about it let me know

You're doing well by chipping away at it my friend... being involved in going for the BFS pinnacle numbers... we spent 3 1/2 years doing the same until we built " OUR " own DYNO for coupes and streamliners ( a govt. agency brought onboard was mutually beneficial... ) and ended up with waaaaay more capabilities like wind tunnel sessions WITH the DYNO... AND being able to hit barometric pressures/ humidity / fuselage external EGT's, etcetera... absolutely invaluable data normally unattainable... and led us to several contracts for Uncle Sugar... will be in touch my friend... AA/BGALT (blown Gas Altered) record is 286.780 mph (set last year) & is only 4mph slower than the Blown Fuel record set way back in 1991. The Density Altitude at Bonneville can get above 8500ft & that takes a really big variation in tuneup to keep them alive.

Very cool to see you tuning an LSR car which is not exactly the same as drag racing and i appreciate you pointed out the car differences. I’m entering my second year of Land Speed Racing and its an interesting challenge from other forms. Many people who are familiar with drag racing I’ve met do not understand the differences. Another point to remember is that this car will not just expect to make top speed in the 5th mile. They will be shooting for a record speed probably in the timed 3rd, 4th and 5th miles. Because to earn the new record a backup run has to be made the following day so your average speed is better than the existing record. And if you have good speeds in multiple mile marks you have more options in that second run to average your speed. Both speeds that later get averaged have to come from the same mile mark so its to your advantage to hit your goal and hold it there provided you are not worried about over stressing the engine. I’ll be there at Speed Week next week and look for this car for sure. Thanks for the in-depth view of your process.

I appreciate including “all the data” in regards to fluid temps in addition to the tuning changes. I’m curious if you’ve noticed how not just intake air temps affect numbers but how the actual ambient air temp/quality affects them. When I used to spray metallized coatings we had some booths that cycled air within the building and some that vented to the roof. Those booths coatings definitely caused inconsistency when we extremely humid or cold wintry precipitation days.
