Ohhhh baby, this is getting good! I'm about 70% trough my first load work-up, and am 90%+ towards my goal of consistent 1/2 MOA performence with the 300 PRC full-custom. It's just going to get better from here!

My 1:9 twist McGowan barrel loves sierra's 240 smk's. Retumbo powder seems to be the best with an SD of 3 fps! Bonus if you want something really special, check out Alco bullets and there 240gr projectiles using the same powder charge and seating so that the bullet is just as far into the powder column as the Sierra's you developed the load with. It will amaze you! The alco's gave me 285 less inches of drop at 1560yds with the same 3fps SD.

Great stuff!! I'm sure you have enough experience to have developed a "feel" for load development and it was an educated guess between Retumbo and H-1000 while working up also. Not something I would remotely suggest to newbies! I'm surprised you don't seem to have or use Quickload with all the load development you do. I have had it for about 6 months and I wish I would have bought it years ago! It will help you determine the best likely powder/charge for your application before even buying components. If you get into wildcats, you can know where to safely start with what powders. The program is just conservative enough to be safe but ALWAYS WORK UP.

So I have the Savage 110 Elite Precision chambered in 300 PRC and with the factory Hornady 225 grain eld-m my 4shot group measured .46 moa. The Twist rate is 1.8:5. My 6th-10th shots through the gun was what I went off of. Velocity was 2887 avg. After that I went straight to 700 yards. 4mil hold at 7 then 5.6mil at 9. I love this cartridge.

One thing that I had read or was said to me on a forum is to not let your next shell stay in a warm or hot chamber very long or at all, the heat transfer can increase velocity and then mess up your ES and SD....Love your videos, very intriguing, I'm waiting for my custom bighorn 6.5prc build to be done, the excitement is intense for mine and to see how yours goes!

New brass will have a little more pressure bc its usually a bit smaller than 1x reload. Id compare velocities there to help determine those effects bc the harmonics may be off a hair making the barrel stop inconsistently.

I use a laser thermometer to check barrel temp during load development. Make sure you check at the same spot each time. Pretty quickly you will figure out how long to wait between shots for your particular rifle and cartridge to keep the temperature consistent throughout the testing.

K type thermocouple and a small digital meter is way better and can be left on during testing to keep a better eye on temps. Just use a strip of alloy tape over the chamber to hold thermocouple in place.

Retumbo gives some crazy velocities for the 225 eldm from what I've tested in 300WM. I'm using 78-81 grain and getting 2875 - 2950 fps until I start getting pressure signs but these shoot like total crap. At 74 grains at 2750 fps I get 5 SD and 11 ES and then I have huge node 78-81 with 15 ES and 7 SD but the groups are like 4 MOA... I have given up on retumbo I don't think it will shoot in my rifle unless I get a barrel tuner

Hello Gavin, I just finished my 300 PRC build, I went with a 27” Benchmark 1:9.5 twist MTU contour barrel. Have you looked into the IMR 8133 powder for your load testing? Retumbo & H1000 is almost impossible to get right now. When looking at the powder burn rate chart, the IMR 8133 also falls right between the Retumbo & the H1000.

I have a suggestion, in my extensive testing with the new ELD line from Hornady, I noticed that getting very tight groups was near impossible. I'd like to turn your attention towards something like the berger 230s. Keep in mind if you try them that a cut barrel tends to like the OTM like a bit better due to thicker jackets. As a reference the most I could get out of an ELD-M was just over a .5moa where a OTM would get me down to the .3s and smaller sometimes. This is out of a 300WM with a 1-9 which I am looking to rebarrel to the PRC if someone would try the 230s....wink wink. Thanks for all your data you do a great job with your content.

Hey Gavin. Fantastic video. Some great Intel right there. Thank you for taking the time. A Few months back I picked up the savage elite precision rifle in 300prc. I've only got 30 rounds of factory 225 grain eld match through it an the first 20 where all cold ,clean bore on acount of my break in procedure. But , on paper an zeroed within 5.This thing literally shoots through the same hole every time. On this box of cartridges the speed says 2810 but this rigs running 2990s through the chronograph. Do to the 30 in, 1 in 8.5 barrel, I'm sure. I gotta deal on a few hundred 250 Atip match that I'm hoping will do well in this rig. My question to you is. Where do you think I should start? With load development with these 250s? The accuracy an speed I'm getting is better then I've seen in any factory rifle. I've only ran a few rounds at 400 and a few at 800 an it's sub moa at every distance I've tried so far.Considering what I'm already getting outta this thing with factory 225 eldm do you think it's a mistake to even load these 250 grain Atips? Worst case is, I could always sell these projectiles on line. An get some 225 grain eldm or Atip. Thing is, I'm completely happy with it , going of my speed ,my 100 an my 400 yard zero I made a dope card out to 2000 an my 800 was spot on. Still gotta test at 1500 an 2000 to know for sure but I'm pretty confident I'm a be super close. Any handload ideas or Intel you could pass on to me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gavin .

Could you please do more load development for 300 PRC But using more ov a different powders... like H1000, 7828ssc, Reloader 25/26 and with different grain bullets...like 200 Grain and 230 gr and whatever else comes to mind... its hard to find powders now days but it would be grate to know what other powders could be used for different loads... need more data, please put something nice together as you always do such a grate job! Just more details on 300 PRC... I got a Bergara HMR in 300 PRC with 26 inch barrel... so far Ive reloaded 200 gr ELDX with around 73.5 gr - 74 gr ov 7828ssc ... at it worked well at 100 yards.... but I want to take it out to a 1000 yards ... I know things will be different at that distance and that is why I would love to see more load data with different common powders ...Thank you Gavin!

Hey Gavin, I have a 300PRC and it's incredibly fun I reload most of my ammunitions and have a little different question for you My Rifle loves Hornady #82162 225gr match factory ammo so because it's expensive and not all that easy to find I've been trying to duplicate the factory load now I think the powder they are using is IMR 7828SSC and I have all the big Magnum powders in stock. I know it's not H1000 or Retumbo and when check the hornady loads I'm getting 73.9 on the powder now it looks like IMR 7828SSC to me even burns like it but the Reloading Data on Hornady site has a max charge of 70.1 for the 225gr ELD Match bullet so what do you think?

Interesting - I would always start my load development with seating depth first. Say with a mid charge and between 5 and 50 thou off the lands with 5 thou increments to see what it prefers before starting with ladder, OBT or other charge weight tests. Not for a second saying that is correct because of course, if you change one parameter, then the other may have to change to produce the best precision. Would love to see some scientific and statistical research into how to find the optimum load in the fewest rounds. Keep up the good work :)
@hank3152
@hank3152 4 года назад
Kevin Adam look at the Satterlee 10rd load development video by the 6.5 Guys. He finds a velocity node then goes into seating depth. Seems pointless to do seating depth first on an unproven accuracy load beforehand
@ShootingAndReloading
@ShootingAndReloading 4 года назад
@@hank3152 Thanks - I'll go look at that now. I'd like to see it proven that a velocity node will remain the same with changing seating depth. Changing seating depth modifies start pressure, overall max pressure and barrel time.
@mistr_clean7557
@mistr_clean7557 4 года назад
The satterlee is only good for node ranges.. it says nothing for es/sd so the proper way would be to run a ladder to identify nodes then run an ocw over that node for accuracy and velocity consistency test then finally seating depth

The 210 grain RDF might be worth checking out, G1 of .701. Midway has them on sale for $.36. If they have the "Free shipping over $49" thing they do, that's not a bad price. Those 200 grain smk also look pretty nice with a g1 of .715. Midway is showing a G1 of .8 for the 230 grain smk. The 250 grain Atip would probably be the most "interesting" to see though.

What are the benefits of 300prc vs 300winmag because I have no problems using the longer higher bc bullets in my 300winmag hornady 208 gr eldm I'm seating them .007 off lands I've also worked up a load and my remington 700 sps long range has no problem fitting the rounds in the internal box magazine This gun which is basically a factory rifle and all I have done is add a timney calvin elite trigger, bedded the recoil lug, bedded the scope base, and lapped the scope rings. It is shooting a .313in group at 100 yards I've worked up loads for various bullets from 150gr to 220gr all with very close group sizes. So my question is what is the point of a 300 prc if it is virtually the same as several other magnum cartridges? To me it seems like just another way for die makers and various other manufacturers to have a so called latest and greatest caliber. Which I've already laid out a pretty good argument to the contrary. Any insight you might have would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time, I enjoy watching your video's!!!

Do you need to do a satterley test for each variable? Can making a small change make a big difference to where your node is?

No, I don't think it's totally necessary unless changing powders or jumping to a bullet in a different weight class...

Test the Berger 230 grain hybrid. It has a G1 BC of .710. Should be a good one for the 300 PRC.
@rayjohnson4037
@rayjohnson4037 4 года назад
But the HORNADY ELD-M has a lot higher BC like.777...Berger hybrids are old hat...my 308 win shoots the new Sierra MK crimped nose 200 grain .715 at 2743 average fps. Sierra's new 230 is .800 BC, why go backward to Berger at .710...Berger need improvement they are now old design, old school. the 150 Sierra 6.5 Creedmoor has a .713 BC that I can run at 2900 fps...that would shoot better (wind and drop) than a 230 Berger out of the 300 PRC. Go to Hornady A Tip .823 vs the old Berger design for a .710 BC. I Don't even look at the yellow boxes anymore, for long range.

Logan- YES! I can load to the lands with this setup- SAAMI spec chamber, NOT OEM. Gotta love it! And the MDT mag allows up to 2.850" - to-lands distance for this one is 3.738" - oooooh yeah.

Going for a maximum pressure load? I really don't know about you Dudes! Approaching maximum stresses the rifle parts. Can set back locking lugs and does a job on the rifling origins. By the way, as the rifling wears and roughs up, pressures go up and velocity drops off.

I’m getting into reloading for my 300 prc, unfortunately powder is hard to come by and all I could get my hands on is some N170. I’ve been told it’ll work but I can’t find any other information. Do you have any recommendations?

I’m using 75gr of RL 26 w 210 gr Berger VLDH that is 1/4 MOA . Also loaded IMR 7977 w I think 74 gr and it was exactly the same group and zero, I’ve never seen that in 20 years of reloading.

Gavin, you keep using the term Pressure Signs, with your load development, may I point out the phrase you should be using is Excessive Pressure Signs. There is a lot of new shooters out there these days that post their fired targets and show off their fired cases, and they too use the term pressure signs and really don't know what they are talking about. As an example a fired case shows a primer cup starting to crater itself into the firing pin hole at the bolt face and their comment is excess pressure, when they have stated a mild weight of their chosen powder. When that cratering could be the result of the bullet jamming into the lands to soon upon firing and the powder burn spike caused the flow of the primer to follow the firing pin in the hole at the bolt face and such pressure sign would disappear if the bullet is seated farther from the lands. So how about using the term Excessive Pressure signs, and pointing out cause and effect of the load development with respect to bullet ogive to barrel lands starting point.

@@Ultimatereloader I think Preston means that the bullet is still in its transient stage of oscillation at 100 yards, and thus he means you need to test out further when you develop like at 300 or 400 yards so that the bullet is at a steady state of oscillation when it hits the target.

Barrel twist and bullets are kinda of magic..I fired a really long new 200 grain SMK .715 BC in a 1-12 twist Sierra says a 1-9 twist for the 308 winchester shot the first 3 in a .113" group.at 100 yds though it was luck fired a second group .149" took it out to 712 yards two were together one out right to about 4" but they didn't tumble or loose stability at that range. I always wondered what was true about bullet stability, wobble, trans sonic flight, cause sometimes it doesn't seem to hold true, with a particular bullet or cartridge I choose for the day...A high speed camera that follows the said bullet in flight at said velocity through certain environmental conditions!

Why choose the 300 PRC over the 300 RUM for long range. I run the 300 RUM same .777 a BC 225 Hornady bullet at 2980 fps muzzle as my accuracy load (can go over 3000 fps) with has 2862 fps 100 yard velocity well above your 2683 100 yard velocity almost 200 fps...and accuracy is good. Yes the barrel gets hot so I shoot 3 shot groups range from less then a 1/4" to 3/4" good for a hunting rifle. 5 shot groups can go less than a inch if you go slow..but that is a lot of wear on the barrel. Both of these cartridges are of very similar design...Just get a Wyatts magazine box to shoot cartridges up to 4 inches in length from the mag...$63 and a little work to fit it to your RUM...plus ya get another 150 to 200 fps on your 225 grain bullet...
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 4 года назад
For absolute take-down power, yes- 300 RUM. For long-range optimized high-bc bullets, less recoil, optimized chamber geometry, and less barrel heat-up, 300 PRC! Each one has its own application- with lots of crossover as well. That's my personal opinion. :)
