Jonny! PLEASE load up 71.3gn and do the Cortina seating depth test in .003” increments. Just do 3 shot groups. Load about 4 groups longer, and 3 groups shorter than your current seating depth. You’re so close! I’m really looking forward to seeing your 6.5 PRC tests as well!
I've been very busy for the last few weeks so I haven't been watching but I just wanted to say that I'm happy that the target camera is back! There is something very satisfying about watching the bullet punching holes! lol
I’ve talked to a few people using A-Tips for long range hunting. If you ever get time for a ballistics gel test with these bullets, you can count me as a viewer.
Johnny, You brought up "Recoil Management" and that is a real thing when shooting, also, even if your barrel and action are pillar bedded, glass bedded, and free-floating (Barrel) wise. minute shifts take place combined with recoil as the stock is like a tuning fork and "tone" affects accuracy as the vibration changes in small ways. Firing a .300 Winchester Magnum is an art in itself and the difficulty stacks as repeated firings take place. What I saw was more than acceptable accuracy taking into consideration what was being fired and all the "Stacked" variables when shooting a super duper-belted Magnum planet destroyer. Subscribed. I appreciate the full story & honesty showing the larger groups. Some channels out there, every group is between 0.1 MOA to 0.3 MOA, which causes me to question their results.
I’ve been using RL26 for a couple years. Many will talk about temp stability and pressure spikes above 85 degrees fahrenheit. I have found this to be true. In my case I think I really noticed it at about 90 degrees, but it’s definitely a thing. I love RL26 for the amazing velocity and I get single digit SD’s with it out of my 6.5-284. Just have to be conscious when shooting at higher temps.
I was given a box from a buddy of 190 grain 284 A tip match bullets and I kind of made a lot of light-hearted jokes about these bullets. That is until I loaded them up and shot them through my 28 Nosler. This is my thousand yard match rifle and I shot tighter. More consistent groups through than my usual Berger Eol bullets. This gun actually loves these bullets and I have been through two more boxes and I'm quite pleased with their consistent results.
Good evening, I commented on the use of Reloader 26 powder for several calibers in the past. I use this powder for 300 WM RPR using the Hornady 225 Gr. ELD-M and also the Ruger RPR 6.5 Creedmoor with a 140 Gr. ELD-M. and the 6mm Creedmoor RPR 108 Gr. ELD-M. I have successfully loaded this powder to reach distances out past 1 mile in the 6.5 and the 6mm on a IPSC target. I have found that the key to loading for this powder in the specified cartridges is to load till you find safe pressures and let the rifle dictate what it can shoot. I live in a relatively low area, 630 Feet above sea level. I load here and travel west to Wyoming to shoot in elevation to achieve the distance. There is a substantial difference in FPS and pressure when making this transition in elevation. Be careful. I have never shot the Hornady A Tip in my rifle. They are a bit pricey for my budget. I load and shoot without any assistance from any sponsor. I can tell you that the Hornady bullets that I shoot are reaching the outer limits of my capabilities with the rifle I shoot and the limits of the optics I use. This combination of rifle, bullet and powder; not to mention scope and other various components are hard to beat in the calibers mentioned. Keep the great videos coming.
I remember seeing a video from David Tubbs talking about how it's not the tip that makes these lower drag, but the groove between the bullet and tip. I think he sells a tool to add this groove in bullet jackets that don't have that. Would make an interesting video if you're looking for video ideas JRB?
Yeah, but the tubbring tool is either stupid expensive or really confusing to get off his site, I don't know which but the only listing I saw on his site mentioning the tool was crazy priced
Love your channel. I am shooting 300WM in Savage Elite Precision with RL-25 and 208 ELDMs. 3050fps 30" barrel. Hitting sub-MOA at the mile on nice days. I should try the 225 ELDM. RL-25 is actually a bit slower than RL-26 and gives more velocity than H1000 by 80fps. FYI. In reference to your 71gr vertical strung group, that stringing is you! Lol. Whenever you can draw a straight line through the holes like that its the shooter. I noticed your rifle recoiled differently in the front rest. Easy to criticize I know, but I saw the gun recoiling back inconsistently. Thanks again for making your channel great!
Good to see you get the Savage back out! Very interested in a 6.5 PRC set up but sad to hear this rife being changed out of the 300 format, but hey you always bring good stuff to the table and I am sure I will enjoy watching what you do. Did you happen to measure any of the projectiles lengthwise? I would imagine they are pretty consistent being an aluminum Tip.

I for one would like you to try shooting these in your Compass with a slower twist, to see if they stabilise? Please? Years ago I tried shooting the 105gn A-Max in my 1-10” twist 243. I know the box says 1-9”, but who reads the instructions? Anyway I didn’t blow my face off, or hit the 100m target. WTF, so I shot at a 50m target and achieved a Shotgun like pattern, rather than a group. About 12” spread with all projectiles hitting sideways. Which probably isn’t good for high BC performance? Great learning experience and visual demonstration of Stability Factor trumping high BC in some combinations.
Not sure if this will be seen, but I recently installed a Glades Armory Bolt handle onto my Savage 110 ultralite and its made a HUGE difference when cycling the bolt. Anyways keep up the great work!
It would have been interesting to compare bullet run out between cases with no expander ball and after using expander ball. I am getting better run out with no expander ball and using bushing dies from Whidden Gun Works.
I had a guy tell me last week that he can get 3000fps with a 225gr eldx with his 300wm. I don’t have a 300wm but thought that sounded awfully fast for a 225gr. I think he got confused with 180s. I do have a 300rum and that will push a 225gr to 3150, but that is with 102.5grs of powder. I don’t see how 70 something grains in a 300wm can be that ballisticly close.
Got a savage same fluted heavy barrel in 308, its chamber is extremely tight and it's a very very fast barrel, very fast, like 160s darn near touching 3000 once unintentionally, but with like 175smks and varget or anything else really it flys faster than factory box loadings say or load data consistantly
You now have brass fire formed to the Savage. It would be interesting to see if there is an accuracy difference in the Thompson Cemter between the “Savage” brass and the “T/C” brass. I have always heard fire formed brass is more accurate.
Fire formed is more accurate. Working the brass the very minimum, while still ensuring reliability, is the best accuracy practise. No need for that to be tested. Just look at the people who compete. Great video thanks.
I see you're back to using the Redding T7 today. I always wonder if it makes a notable difference on target when you use something like the T7 or Lyman 8 vs your newer Rebel press. I'm surprised you've never tested this out. Pick a good known load that already shoots well in a particular rifle. Test the brass for runout and weight beforehand and pick 5-10 cases for each press and see if it makes a difference. You'd also want to use a good seater die like the Forester BR or Redding micrometer with chamber seater. I plan to test mine against each other when I get a new concentricity gauge but would love to have a T7 or Lyman 8 if they produced just as accurate ammo as the Rebel. But for now my plans are Lee turret for pistol ammo and good single stage for rifle ammo.
Hello Johnny, I truly enjoy watching your videos, they are very educational. I have a question for you concerning loading these Hornady 230 grain A-Tip bullets in 300 Win. Mag. Have you ever loaded them using Accurate MagPro or Ramshot Magnum powder? I've been trying to find, so far without success, load data, grains and minimum OAL using these two powders with this bullet.
I'm a beginner Reloader. Reloading 300 Win Mag. My rifle is a T/C Venture II. When seating my bullets I've had some go below 3.340. Is it ok to shoot those or do I need to pull the bullet and reseated it? I'm reloading Hornady 150gr FMJ/BT & 220gr Sierra Match King.
none of my savage barrels shoot rite till the 10-15th round on a clean barrel. you may try shooting those charges in backward order off a clean barrel just for kicks
I feel you need to try to focus on getting a good charge. Then start shortening the col. The closer to base of the bullet the better my accuracy has gotten. Sometime it's not about getting close to the rifling but maximizing the potential of the round. The barrel just guides the round to the target. Performance of each round reflects on how we reloaded the brass.
Great video, thank you. Noticed your brass is Peterson Long - I have been thinking about buying some of that also. I have the regular Peterson size for my 300WM but the Long eliminates the need to fireform I guess. Also, where did you get the RL26? Alliant powder is non-existent. I've been looking for RL23 but none available unless you want to get scalped. And primers are also unavailable. But I would love to see the 71gr where you adjust seating depth.
My savage model 10 ba/le shoots very fast. My 26 in remington shoots my 175 grain smk load at about 2600 fps and that 24 inch savage shoots the same load upwards of 2750.
You have to watch the Hornady micro stem seaters, they like to drift after seating 10-20 rounds. Theres not much friction to hold it steady like redding dies
Wow ...I would have thought a 1:8 twist would have been necessary to stabilise 230+ gn bullets ... And also a magnum sized action to handle the extra OAL ... and a 30 inch barrel to develop the ballistics of a caseful of slow-burning powder ...
so - the first shot with the deeper seated bullet in the cold barrel - did not effect the velocity and point of impact in comparison to the other 4 shots?
I've noticed that my 6.5 CM Petersen cases have about 1.3gr less case capacity than my Hornady and Starline cases, and I (predictably) hit velocity and pressure sooner with them. Maybe your Petersen .300 WM cases have a little less capacity than average and are causing higher pressure/velocities?
I would love to use the A-Tip bullet in my 300 win mag with the 230gr could you another powder so i can see what other choice i could use for my gun pleas and thankyou
They list 220gr SMKs with SW4350 on the Shooters World loading guide. You might be able to cross reference the Lovex powder number. and see if Lovex has more info. 220 SMK shows start of 58.0gr to max of 65.5grs (63k psi with 220gr SMK). So the powder is in the burn rate range.
