I'm not a Vale fan, but I always liked them - John Rudge was a magician, taking a perenially broke club from 4th division to 2nd, with results like this and against Everton in '96. And no 'hoof and hope' long ball rubbish either. Well I remember the likes of Bogie and Foyle playing the controlled passing game in a manner that was as an abject lesson to anyone who played the game.
Watching today and thought exactly the same. I'll never forget this game. It will live with me forever. Dad took me. I was 11. Remember Jimmy Greaves saying only problem spurs have is finding the ground and us all shouting are you watching jimmy greaves
To think Jimmy Greeves was slagging us Vale off before the game by saying we won’t get past the half way line., and if only we could bring back those dizzy heights of John Rudge era, the day I became a Vale fan and never looked back, Ray Walker was brilliant that day and what a Vale captain and legend at the club
Ray Walker was a class box to box midfielder, control it tight or spread it wide which ever suited. Unlike today's Holding midfielders, players like R/W DIDNT HOLD MIDFIELD THEY RAN IT.
i remember listening to this game on my radio and being too shamed to go out and play footy with my pals , because id given large about how spurs would win easy ... lol
Was There on the day. The start of the JOHN RUDGE era ! Promotion followed and then on May 3rd 1998 Port Vale stay in the championship and Manchester City get relegated along with SJOKE CITY !!! 2019 !!!! Watch out Nathen Jones !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Memorable game, that goal by the number 4 (Porter I think) has lodged in my memory ever since, Great technique. Surely us average players learn a little from watching skill like that.
