In this video, I demonstrate how to create high-quality sharpening stones using diamond powder and green silicon carbide powder.
Cost of materials :
- Diamond powder : 8€/100 carats
- Green silicon carbide powder : 15€/500gr
I'll be mixing the powders with epoxy (the less epoxy possible) to have them binded to an aluminium support. The support can be changed for wood, iron, copper, plexiglass or whatever you'd like. I only had aluminium on hand.
If I had to evaluate the abrasive quality of the stones :
- Diamond stone : 10/10
- Green silicon carbide : 8/10 (probably because I used too much resin)

Wow, excellent job and innovation! I never would have thought of making my own resin bonded diamond stones! This is something that will save people a lot of money. Thank you for the video, I'd love to see more sharpening related stuff!

Thanks for the video! If you have the time, I'm curious about some of your thoughts based on your experiences with this project. What resin did you use? Do you think it was durable enough, or would another type of resin be more suitable? I never thought of the simple spread method you chose to use for the diamond stones. That seems much more economical and fool-proof than trying to perfectly fill a thin mold with expensive ingredients. Do you think that curing multiple layers together would work to add thickness, or would that negatively affect the quality of the finished product? How are these stones holding up a few months later? Any issues with uneven wear or grit density, gouging, glazing, air pockets, inclusions/contamination, etc. Aside from not having enough SiC powder in the mix; was the SiC stone worth the endeavor, or is the resin bond best suited for diamond abrasives? Would to hear back from yourself and any others who have experimented with DIY resion bonded stones. Thanks!

@@steven1231 hello friend. Thanks for watching. I’ll try to answer your questions. I used whatever resin i had in hand. The one you see in the video is from Dipoxy Germany. It’s the kind of all purpose. Adding multiple layers will definitely work. I see no specific reason why it wouldn’t work. The stones are holding pretty well after few months but I’m not using them heavily or daily, I just use them whenever I need to sharpen my hand plane blades. As for the SiC, I’m not really convinced about it. Either I did use too much epoxy and the mixture wasn’t dry enough or SiC sucks. I tend to think that it’s the 1st option so definitely should be tried again with less epoxy. The issue with this one is that it doesn’t cut much through the material compared to the diamond ones. On the other hand, I use the SiC stone to give all my sharpenings a mirror finish. It works like a charm for this purpose.

@@WoodfulProjects Highly appreciate the reply! I have plenty of 60 & 250 grit SiC to experiment with before I cut into my stash of diamond powder. You video's given me more confidence to try my hand at making my own stones.

This method is only suitable for diamonds. With sic, mix very little epoxy and must have a compression molding machine

Fully agreed. I did try to compress the sic but i had used too much epoxy. It works but not as good as it should. Cheers

@@ognjenvesic9515 you can find plenty on aliexpress. It’s often sold on packets of 100 carats (100gr). Look up for diamond powder.
