In 2019, I made a video about the restoration of the Lichfield canal, which had been ongoing for several decades, powered largely by volunteers and donations. So many people asked me for an update that I've now gone back to see what's changed and whether the pandemic brought things to a halt.

Is this the Lichfield and Hatherton canal system ?

Wow I envy the people of Britain being able to visit and cruise on the canals. We have lots of waterways and streams here in western Pennsylvania but none that match the peaceful beauty or history of Britain's narrow canals. Hooray for all the volunteers who are working to preserve these treasures!

Much of Pennsylvania is too mountainous for canals to be profitable. Not that they didn't build them, but there were too many locks, which meant too many lock-keepers and infrastructure. To actually cross the state, one had to take a boat which could be disassembled into halves, put on an inclined railway system, and hauled over a mountain! Railways soon put the Western Pennsylvania canals out of business. IIRC, a couple in the east were flatter and hauled coal to New York City area, so they survived for many years.

They need to be proud of their persistence :) Thanks, David, for continuing to report on the work, and thanks also to ABNB for sponsoring you. The answers as to why it's being done is brilliant. Having a quiet place to get away from the hectic world and just walk with nature is something so many people don't have quick access to now adays. We live next to a waterway canal here in Canada. And going for along along the canal is a daily thing we do as its so relaxing for the body and mind.

Loved seeing this follow-up! Considering we had Covid and severe economic downturns impact all our lives in harsh ways for nearly 2+ years, it looks like they are doing as well as can be expected! You Brits are such an inspiration for the funding and volunteer energy you jointly muster for projects such as this. I doubt a canal would get that kind of support here in the US! Well done you all! ❤

Thank you David for the good overview of the canal restoration progress. The average person probably assumes canal restorations are just a simple matter of removing soil from the canals and you are good to go. As your video has shown, it is much more complicated than that. With all the overtopping of the canals by more modern infrastructures, even restoration planning needs to be revised at times when unforseen problems are discovered. Given the restoration is primarily privately funded and supported by volunteer efforts plus, given the wonderful canal environment, this is a tremendous asset and testimony to the British people! I am envious and wish we had the same thing in the US.

As someone who lives in Lichfield, Peter at 9:30 is right. There is a depressing lack of nice paths/walks in and around Lichfield, so having at least somewhere nice to walk will be a massive improvement! Something that has always been very annoying as both Whittington and Burntwood have no lack of lovely walks and they are only a few miles away on either side.

Thanks David, very interesting (if frustrating! - if only there was a canal fairy...). A lot has been done in 4 years - much more than I would have thought - but there's still so much to do. I wonder what a realistic finish date would be? Given the work still outstanding, especially all the locks and bridges, it must be decades, rather than years - especially regarding the railway and major road bridges. We know from your other restoration videos that each of these projects can take years, just to get the planning and fund-raising sorted out, never mind the actual construction. It's a sobering thought that many of the voluteers involved are unlikely to see the project completed. Under those circumstances, it's wonderful to see their dedication and determination. Where would we be without people like this?

Is that ten year time frame due to a lack of laborers, equipment? Or funding ? I would love you look into this freeing funding to try and help get this project finish so the new canal can be done it to use sooner than later as I’m looking at buying my first narrowboat and retiring to it from my sailboat. Bravo, David! You’re the Canal Man! I’m amazed how many NB vlogs there are….perhaps this exposure may provide leverage for additional funding, over time. I hope there are effective Canal lobbyists to advocate for the benefits of well managed canals to communities and for wildlife. It also provides more housing options for many who may not be able to afford home ownership, except for a Narrowboat. Keep up the good work!

When you see all the work and effort put into the restoration you have to wonder at the mentality of the vandals waiting to drop supermarket trolleys into it. These things seem real value for money in society.

Thank you for this wonderful update. I'd been curious what had happened with this restoration and their own videos were getting farther apart as Covid ravaged the world. Your American Cousins are envious of your canal system and the special ambiance they bring to your country. Also, happy to see you and your wife out on the canals again. No one presents this information like you do.

There are a number of canals and rivers in Somerset we would love them to restore. The River Parrett used to connect to several canals, including the Bridgwater to Taunton canal. Sadly many locks have been removed and navigation no longer possible :(
