It’s 2023, and women still only make 83 cents for every dollar a man makes in the U.S. While that gender wage gap has shrunk over time, why does it still persist? And what would it take to close it?
Claudia Goldin is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. She’s written numerous books on women in the workforce and the history of labor. Her most recent book is called Career and Family: Women’s Century-Long Journey Toward Equity.
Claudia and Greg discuss the history of the gender wage gap, how women’s place in the workforce has shifted over time, and what steps employers can take toward true pay and gender equity.
unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.

Say hello to RU-vid’s algorithm… it’s all about YT revenue potential, video is not promoted, that might change now, it’s down to viewers to like and comment to make it relevant! Awesome interview!

That "nobel" is not a real "nobel"... and no one serious considers economics a science.

Because she's a woman and misogyny & internalized misogyny are still a thing. We don't want to listen to women experts; we refuse to give them the attention, credit & respect they deserve.

I am so happy that there are still people trying to find reasons for gender pay gap WITH DATA and not just intuitions. It is the only way to actually be able to effectively do something about it. In these times, we are people like Claudia Goldin are really important. I am really happy for her winning the Nobel price. The interviewer is making a great job btw. You can tell he dedicated some time before the interview. Also I want to point out my favorite uncomfortable moment of this interview: 31:10 Greg LaBlanc: "I think there is some kind of party going on, outside your office (hahahaha)." Claudia: "Given that it's memorial day and we should be honoring those who died in service of the U.S. saying that it's a party, i think, is a problem."

It's not just a household level decision, though, because the people who determime what these jobs will require of applicants refuse to design those requirements with any provisions for men OR women to balance caretaker responsibilities, creating an either/or dynamic which disproportionately hurts women's opportunities as women are the childbearers and even those who choose not to have children will be less liiely to be chosen for those demanding (high paying) jobs or advancements because of the suspicion (expectation) that will change at some point.

I admire women who sacrifice career for family.

INFORMAZIONE Mi chiedevo se qualcuno conosce una ricerca paragonabile a quella dll`ultimo libro della Goldin, basata su dati italiani o anche europei. Grazie

I wonder why she used the term "greedy jobs" instead of something with less of a negative tone such as "sacrificial job". A job that rewards you for taking an extra step, traveling, moving, working longer hours, working in more dangerous environments etc. Also having this negative opinion towards people who prioritize career over family weakens my belief in Claudia not being biast in her research.

Gender gap? I don’t know if it even exists. Can you give me an example of a man and a woman doing exactly the same job for the same company and getting paid differently?
