Just wanted to add; I think it's great that you're working and promoting this set-up. You obviously have the cash to buy a "flagship" set-up many times over, but this will allow a whole generation of aspiring dj's to get started with minimal outlay. Bravo, sir!

I love the fact that you can setup cue points on your songs through your phone, since it’s always so time consuming. It’s so convenient because next time you’re bored and waiting in line somewhere, instead of wasting time with entertainment to pass the time, you can continue to work on your craft since it’s all capable of being done at the touch of your fingertips. Glad you’re helping revolutionize this technology Laidback Luke. 🙌🏼

absolutely! As he said it - in the Pioneer universe you can now as well; with the paid system of Cloud Sync it works surprisingly well! I really love this feature! (being a Pioneer DJ now - not Reloop yet ;)) So "modern technic" yay!!!

@@laidbacklukeI am greatly inspired by your willingness to explore a set up that is 1st of all budget friendly, 2ndly considerably lighters which makes it easier on the set up crew 3rdly more reliable than Rekord box which I keep on hearing horror stories about, and as I am an Electronic Music Producer/DJ and a Tour Manager this makes my life much easier as a Tour Manager as the Pioneer CDJ 3000's are unreliable due to the plastic spindles supporting the Jog wheels (Good for repairs technicians, not so good for reliability) Keep it up

Completely a game changer. I used to work in club scene more in the early 2010s (hiring/scouting out local talent to bring into places) - and always wanted to try djing. The pricing though (for a CDJ-mixer-CDJ) set up was too steep for me

I absolutely love and admire how you embrace new technologies for your sets. I can relate to the "hate" you might get from the purists cause I've personally had my share of that first when I switched to CDs, and then when I started using traktor (even with vinyl timecode). It amazes me that some people still fail to understand that the gear is irrelevant at this point and what matters is that we keep the crowd happy, and the clubs packed. Thanks to you I re-discovered Denon and got myself a little Prime Go a couple of years ago. If the promoter can provide a Pioneer or a Denon set up I'll use it. If they can't I bring my traktor set up (two Kontrol D2's). And if its a small club or a smaller town where no "big" set ups are available for rent I just bring my Prime Go. And the crowd doesn't care as long as we keep delivering good music. I love to see you showcasing this newer set up too, it looks like a great option for portability and the app looks powerful too. Much love from Mexico!

I would really like to see a 2023 mixtour with usbc to usbc to connect iphone or iPad, 4 more buttons for each deck so you don't have to press shift all the time and pushed rotary mixer buttons so you toggle on/off the stems. If you are not a scratch dj, iPad and a controller with audio interface is the best solution in my opinion.

I’m enjoying the Reloop mixtour for years now. I have about 11 mixers to choose from at home. Rotary mixers, controller mixers, vintage mixers and DIY rotary mixers but the mixtour is by comfort my number 1! Some years ago I bought 2 mixtours(1 as a backup) but a year ago I sold the second one, new and still in the box. I have never had trouble with the number 1(I even used it outdoors running on a powerbank for 13hours)

I am impressed with this setup. Flexible and cheaper than traditional setups. I like you because you don't stick to a specific system but you constantly try new systems and technologies that suit you better. My opinion is that you are moving in the right direction. There will always be people who say that to be a DJ you have to play with cdjs or turntables, but they are stuck in the past. The world changes rapidly and you adapt accordingly. I always learn something new from you in each of your videos. I'm waiting for the next one! 🙂

This is such an excellent example that you don't need a million dollar controller or dj decks to be considered a pro level dj .. At the end of the day its all about playing good music that counts , and if your set up is as portable as this its such a great advantage...Not to long ago djs where only spinning records with no cue points ,no fx . no music selection at this level .. This would be considered a miracle not to long ago... The future looks bright for the new generation of djs and this videos is a great example of what's to come ..Great video Luke 👍

I love this video and its thoughtful explanation, which totally matches my feelings and I'm sure many others too. Thank you to Laidback Luke for putting this out. I'm sure it'll encourage new DJs to stick with what works for them, without feeling like they gotta conform to the old school Pioneer DJM900 and CDJs. Like a lot of people, I started out DJing with just an MP3 player and Virtual DJ - CDJs and Pioneers were totally unfamiliar to me. Even though over time there was pressure to switch to CDJs, they seemed outdated. So I went with the Reloop Mixtour instead for a more modern setup. Just unplug the RCAs from the mixer and you're good to go. For anyone commenting that the Mixtour only has 2 decks - Virtual DJ has four decks on software.

I learned how to dj from this app. Before I could buy a “proper” controller this app taught me the fundamentals. And those fundamentals translated into producing. It’s so cool to me to see it being used in a festival setting. The gear is just a tool to accomplish a task. How creative you get with what you have is what will always set you apart. I believe that everything you need is within reach. You just need to look for it and know how to look differently at it.

Me myself switched from Traktor to DJay Pro AI some months ago. Since it also was my back up system I also have the Mixtour for a couple of years now already, actually shortly after it was released in early 2016 always loved the vision of an ultra portable yet powerful set up. Thing is I think the Mixtour has become a little bit outdated, cause it doesn‘t portray all the new amazing possebilites the app has to offer. Most of all I’m missing ways to control FXs and the presence of performance pads. So I had high hopes that Reloop was able to provide this with the Buddy and/or the Ready. What can I say…as much as I love the layout of those controllers I was shocked what a poor sound quality these controllers have. The Mixtour still sounds powerful and awesome und comparison after all these years. No competition! Ican only hope that with you on their team now, Reloop will take a new shot on releasing an ultra portable controller for all the key features of Djay Pro AI with professional sound quality and outputs.

I LOVE the innovation and idea of this. Have been using my phone for the odd song request that I may not have, for years. BUT - I really have trouble depending on a phone or wifi connection for an entire night. Being in a major city, there's always always always, the chance of interference and signal drop. A phone with high capacity storage and tunes pre-loaded on it would work.

I have been using jogless setup for a long time. Previously just using X1 and any mixer with an audio interface. And when Traktor released in iOS I used it as my backup or lightweight setup. Watching setups being used in big stages like Luke really shows there is a huge possibility that innovation like these will gain acceptance. If we give other brands or platform a try, we might find something useful.

I have started using an Akai AMX that I found used for $40 and was amazed how quickly I stopped missing the features of my larger controllers. It doesn't have cue points like the newer Mixtour but my laptop has a touch screen and I am currently programing a cheap midi controller to handle that. One advantage of the AMX that I hope they add to a version of the Mixtour is RCA inputs for running DVS when I do want decks (though now with HID over USB that isn't a must). Anyway, thanks for bringing attention to these small mixers. The phone connectivity has some advantages I wouldn't have thought of. I may have to look into a Mixtour if for nothing else than to have a powerful and intuitive backup system.

I've seen your set from Tomorrowland Winter. I think this setup could be a gamechanger. I was verry, verry sceptic about this "simple" setup, but WHOW! real nice! The only thing is, that I would miss a couple of direct buttons. The Filter an EQ, are the same knobs in another combination. I like to have it as different knobs. and I think, I would use it with a bigger tablet in place of my phone. In my small studio, I've got a pair of Turntables from Reloop, (RP7000 & RP7000MK2) I like them very much. I don't want to change them for SL1200's. Reloop is not the cheap version of a "OEM Technics".

Thank you, LBL for the channel and all you do for dance music/producers/dj's. One thing that stands out to me the most in this video is that not only are you showing that the system can be more simplified and compact yet powerful but the other point you're making is that the barrier to entry is becoming lower and lower and almost non-existent. I used to want to buy CDJs but realized I would probably never get that much money unless I hit the lotto. I was always set on a Traktor or a Pioneer controller but now I can just use my phone and a mixer. That's incredible. Where do you think DJ Software/Music Streaming will go? I have Apple Music. I see you can use Tidal but don't want to switch streaming services. Do you think apple may collab with or buy a DJ software company or perhaps create their own at some point? I know they are in the production space with Logic and GarageBand but would love to see them offering DJ software or at least their music streaming to a DJ company.

Luke, thank you for taking the time to share this content with us. I tried this setup a long time ago when Spotify was a cloud music option inside the djay app, it was the greatest solution around, there was no need to carry any music at all! When Spotify was no longer an option I stopped using it. The app has potential but it also has some drawbacks, you won't have any luck playing anything if you have events where cell phone signal or wifi are an issue (venues made of metal or concrete, ranch homes, huge events in a dessert, just to name a few real world examples). The only way I see myself using this setup again is if I can plug in my external 4TB drive filled with music. The app requires an internet connection otherwise it's completely useless!

Richie Hawtin was doing the DJing off iPad with Traktor a few years back too. Now he uses them a bunch in tandem with laptops and other analog stuff (depending if he's doing Plastikman or not)

Bought a mixtour on the strength of your previous teaser vids. Thanks for showing how you have programmed the midi on the mixtour - I’ll be making those immediately. (I didn’t think to add nudge functionality like you have , I was going to use pads on my sp404.. DOH!!!) Brilliant video Keep the intro too ;)

Wow! I remember that controller! I still want it. it's as mobile as it gets! I love my Prime Go and Roland 707m for some of the same reasons you are using this setup but I still have platters. Great video

Amazing video Luke! Love seeing how after all these years you keep pushing forward! I love the intro and think you should keep it ! Reminds me that there’s more to life than just wanting to be “Superstar DJs” (: Have you seen or thought about @Reloop RMP Scratch MK2 ? Not sure on the size but should give you platters without being super huge and should just work w your set up. ⅃,,,,L L’s Up! Stay safe traveling and get yourself a Starbucks Chai Tea !

Good that you mentioned Traktor. Even before I owned Serato, and once mp3s became a viable DJ format, I was using Traktor with a similar controller from M-Audio. So that idea is old. It worked but the hands on jog/turntable control was a sacrifice. Like you said, you can't exactly scratch with that and I remember thinking, touch screen control would be a potential solution. The new idea here is the phone and what DJAY app unlocks! It has a capability of doing DVS. The AI stems stuff is a game changer. And the mobile preparation use case is HUGE. I am not a professional DJ, which means I spend my hours sitting at a computer doing a job - away from my DJ gear. Even just being able to listen to the exact same library that I use to DJ would be good, without needing to sync anything. You definitely got me thinking..

9 years ago, I bought my first DJ controller: a small Hercules DJ Control Instinct. It had only the bare necessities, which are extremely similar to what you have here plus two tiny platters. This video demonstrates perfectly the big problem with this controller, that ultimately pushed me to something larger: You don't have enough buttons. every control on your deck has 2, 3, maybe even 4 different functions depending on which other modulator button you press or hold. I could never get used to this, it held me back immensely. It prevented me from doing tight tricks that required access to both Hot Cues and Loop Buttons. It meant I couldn't use the gain knob as I had to remap it to a pitchbend. Half of my EQ was remapped to other functions. It was a wonderful device to get started in the art of DJing, and to fire up a hunger for more, but I could never do any more complex things with it. To this day, my Pioneer SB2, a controller with 4 virtual decks and only 2 channels, holds me back significantly because of the hindered access to the faders on the secondary decks, so I simply do not use them. If you can manage to maintain the same complexity and quality of your unscripted livesets, you have my highest respect. Though I find it hard to believe anyone could reduce their control interface to such a tiny fraction without simplifying their mixing style. I see the benefits of having the DJ software on your phone instead of a laptop or the deck itself, but I don't see the broader scene moving to controllers that are THIS simply anytime soon.

Oh, and considering the price: For that money, I'd rather get a Traktor Kontrol S3 or Numark NS4FX. While I don't know how well / if they work with phones, they're not much more expensive while offering two platters, 4 mixing channels and a LOAD more buttons, while not being super large either. Seems a much better investment to me.

This is really cool! Thank you for this informed tutorial! I definitely have to purchase this. I am a mobile DJ-Vocalist (singer) playing events, bars, weddings, etc. And easy transport is my thing as it's just me alone setting up...I currently use the Pioneer DJ WEGO4 w/a tablet due to it's easy transport and I actually like it a lot but for more basic mixing & FX obviously due to my genres. NO ONE has ever said, "hey get off that stage, your controller isn't big enough!" I see so much hate on my device online etc...but for ME it does the JOB and gets me PAIDDD either way. My favorite quote I live by is ...."ITS NOT WHAT YOU DO, ITS HOW YOU DO IT" and that certainly goes for the entertainment industry...it's ABOUT THE MUSIC. THE VIBE. AND CAN YOU KEEP IT GOING? Personally, I think it's more of a "look cool" factor in other genres like EDM, etc. to have this enormous equipment to look "busy" on stage.. thankfully, I don't need the extra help of that fortunately. NOBODY in my audience cares about equipment. They just want to DAAAAAANCE people or have a great time 😊 🤗 I've even had DJ's from other places in the world that have come up to me after my sets giving me praise for my work....and yes, from my "toy-like" device 😅 so thank youuuuuu. It's nice to see other DJ's shed light on these awesome new-age devices.

Kudos for this approach Luke. I can imagine playing techno on this as transitions are longer, you have time to play with the device a bit. But mixing edm on this is higher level as I guess you need to do everything faster. Video got me thinking a lot, yet i know there are folks who reject this way of djing right away. Very interesting topic indeed....

Happy you find it interesting and have an open mind for this. Both mixing 4 decks of Techno or EDM (which I do for a living right?) is easier on this setup.

I've played on Reloop Contour(interface edition) until i've messed up with AC adapter and plugged it in 12v one instead of 6v. Then i moved to ZOMO MC1000 (production date is 2011, bought new never opened for 99 euro in 2016) and it fit all of my needs, of course all of mine tracks is perfectly warped and i've set all the needed cue points in Traktor, i do not need a pitch fader and jogs for many years, All i need is 2/4 channel mixer. So, Reloop has been made the solid stuff before. Still waiting for Contour successor :) Couple weeks ago i've played on the CDJs first time in 10+ years, it was kinda scary bc i never touched rekordbox-based Pio players, the only thing i found missing is large laptop screen for better tracks search. So, hardware price doesn't matter anything, everything is rely only on your music taste and creativity.

Thank you Samuel! Yes, if anything, this is my journey and I love showing what's possible. Meanwhile in real life, we drive and we stream music from our phones like it's no problem. That while the GPS is running on our phone too. Quick answering emails here and there. Why not DJing right? I don't know anyone who has a CD player in their car still ha ha. Yes here we are in DJ land admiring the CDJs still. It's wild to me.

@LL 1) yes, keep the intro! 2) if programming a few buttons blows your mind, you should take a look at what guys like Ean Golden were doing with Traktor back in the day… 3) the best chef can make an awesome and tasty meal with a scout knife, a wooden spoon and a dirty kitchen… dJay pro has some serious chops.
