It's 1718, an English Quaker lands in Barbados. He is soon horrified to discover the treatment of people working the plantations there. Treatment the Marquis de Sade saw as the only cruelty that could rival that of the ancients. Seeing the headline had me thinking that you were going to have a podcast on Samuel Sewall, who was the only judge in the Salem Witch Trials who repented, and was an early abolitionist.

Also, the most inhumane thing I've ever heard. You surprised me by mentioning DeSade, I knew he lived about then but I had no idea he actually knew about this or that he could have added it to his reportoire

I recently read a book called “A Captain in the 95th rifles”. The Captain in the British army was stationed in the Caribbean Sea. Two items struck me, the large number of his comrades who died of disease and his disgust of slavery. He had no idea of a solution, but felt it must die out in a generation. He seriously contemplated packing his rifle with a half measure of powder and shooting an overseer from a great range. He spoke in triple negatives, so he was a bit hard to follow.

Reminds me of the fictional story of Cot Daley, an Irish slave girl in Barbados. She was 11 or 14 when she was kidnapped and shipped to Barbados along with a number of other Irish women. They told her to tell the trader that she was 13, then by 'law' read understanding that she would serve 7 years, same as an indentured servant. At 21 she reaches adulthood and should get her freedom. She us resold at 18, still with the 7 year promise, at 25 she is sold again, so rinse and repeat. The book catches up to her at age 30 or 35, where she is dying from infection from a whipping.
