31km Freefall (Joseph Kittinger)

In 1960 Joe Kittinger jumped from an altitude of 31,200m (102,800ft) setting several records, one which remains unbroken!
(Update : Felix Baumgartner, with the help of Red Bull and guidance from Joe himself, has now broken highest ascent, highest parachute jump and fastest speed)
Dnb Track is "Balderdash - Marcus Intalex"
Why didn't he burn up?
Basically, he wasn't going fast enough to 'burn'. The air gradually gets thicker, and so he slows down gradually without getting hot enough to combust (though I wouldn't recommend this with bare skin!)
Things that do 'burn up' in the atmosphere due to friction are moving at much higher speeds. For example, the space shuttle re-enters the atmosphere at around 28,000km/h (17,000mph) though is able to deflect the heat with it's ceramic tiled underside.
Meteors (shooting stars) are moving at even greater speeds, and usually disintegrate completely before reaching the ground

I´m Austrian and proud of felix, but 52 years ago... I mean, man, Mr. Kittinger really has balls of steal, nowadays we´re much further with science and shit, Joe is still one of the greatest and carried a much havier load i think. I bow to you first Joe, and then to my countrymen Felix!

53 years ago to this day, Kittinger saw what no man had ever seen before. At 102800ft/over 19 miles, he said a short prayer, and stepped of 'the highest step in the world'. He fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds, reaching speeds in excess of 614mph (mach 0.9). Trailing a drogue chute (still in use today and have saved many lives), he set numerous records, 1 still stands today. I have so much respect for Joe Kittinger!

He jumped from there but when he renetered the earths atmosphere, his make shift suit's (since it was homemade in the 60's) glove area opened a little and his hand was swelled about 3 times the normal size. Absolutly amazing and ballsy jump!

He fell at the speed of sound - 767 mph ( 1,234 kph) before he hit the atmosphere. He said he had no sensation of falling, it just look like the balloon was racing away from him.

at that altitude there is virtually no atmosphere (although technically it extends up to around 60 miles) but its so thin there is no friction with it to slow him down. so he accelerates until factors such as thickness or atmosphere, temperature, his mass, drag, ect, all start to take effect. btw, terminal velocity is 125 for the ave person. its different for different objects

That was a stunning jump !!! That was a stunning jump and I bet He must have had a very unique personal experience. Joe has guts and has defeated fear. He's a guy to be admired and I give You an applause for your courage and for being fearless. Definetely, Joe's got guts !!! How did You overcome the fear of jumping from such a hight ? I wonder. Congratulations Joe. You've got nerves !!! More than Awesome !!!

@FinallyAUniqueName Correct. To clarify, the 1G of force he felt was the force of air counteracting the pull of gravity. Just like us, sitting/standing, we don't feel gravity - we feel the push of what's holding us up, a floor or chair or whatever. He felt 1G of force, except it was provided by the push of air at terminal velocity.

Without air; no friction, no heat. His suit didn't move as he fell for the first few minutes of freefall and with no visual reference, he thought he was floating in space forever. Scary.

*Felix Baumgartner, not redbull. And it was hardly handed to anyone, months of training and preparation went into that. Both men executed similar achievements, to take away from one is to take away from both. They are equally important, though the recent jump is going to help technology much more in the long run.

What did I notice? First, he is looking as he is going to the execution, next, just like he wanted to give up, but choach is pushing him back to that chair, next, after the parashute had opened, he bended as he swooned, next, he did not step on earth, just dropped down... Surely, he was the first one, with no previous experiences of that kind... Anyway, very brave man, and great advantage...

although you reach about 1000km/h in higher atmosphere ( there is almost no air), this velocity descents gradually because air resistance increases, and when you go through lower atmospher, your max velocity is about 200km/h, because of the air density, and you can open yout parachutes without problem

This wasn't like going up in a plane where he could back out if he wanted to, once he left the airfield there was no turning back. That balloon he was on wasn't making a round trip. Once he got to that certain height he had to get off wether he was ready or not! What isolation he must've felt.

@TheSmithDorian
@TheSmithDorian 12 лет назад
I thought that for quite a while. I couldn't see how astronauts in space stations orbiting the earth were weightless yet gravity is supposed to operate over hundreds of millions of miles. The answer is that the orbit is placed at the distance from the earth where the gravity pulling the space station down is exactly matched by the centrifugal force that is trying to throw the space station out into space as it circles the earth at high velocity. Result - the appearance of there being no gravity.
@ilynnad
@ilynnad 12 лет назад
@ndgv2 He would only be going that fast in the upper atmosphere where there thinner air and hence lower air resistance. He would slow down gradually as he approached earth to a terminal velocity of about ~200mph, although earth's gravity would be slightly stronger as he approached too.

Andrev jumped from 83,000 feet. Not sure when he opened his chute. Kittinger jumped from 102,800 and opened at 14,000, meaning he was in free fall for 88,000 feet, more than the altitude of Andrev's jump. Andrev didn't use a drogue shoot, so you can argue that he had the longest without one, but it's not the longest free fall.
@skimowhite586
@skimowhite586 13 лет назад
@zigilwantsu He was going 1000km per hour not per second. A certain speed is required in order to BURN as you call it. Why well the things that burn require energy. Which often means fast moving molecules. So when you fall at 5 miles per second that fall an speed turns into BURN

I read that he actually fell a little faster, and reached supersonic speed. Just imagine a GUY setting off a sonic boom. Not a spacecraft re-entering or a meteorite, just SOME DUDE! Imagine you're sitting in your house and you hear a sonic boom rattling the walls. "That's just Joe coming back!" To me, that seems so funny...a guy flying through the atmosphere that fast all by his lonesome, no spacecraft or anything. And that would be freaking hilarious if he set of a sonic boom.

@IcedOizen Wouldn't he burn up as he re entered? or is that only from outer outer space? The reson things burn up is (correct me if im wrong) because the friction on the earths atmosphere causing ALLOT of heat, as i said, correct me if im wrong, and im sure this is only in part

He set 4 Air Force records, the highest balloon ascent, the highest parachute jump, the longest drogue-fall (four minutes), and the fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere without the aid of aircraft, and one more unofficial record; the biggest set of balls ever….hell yeah! He jumped from an open gondola, using new and unproven technology...no matter what the rest of ever do now or in the future..it will NEVER match the guts of Joe Kittinger, that means you Felix.

I think it was meant as a friendly gesture, a term of endearment between friends (which normally would have an opposite meaning). I'd translate it as : "You actually did it you son-of-a-bitch! Had me worried, but you made it and I'm glad! Amazing!"

@TheMinnesnowda Nothing orbits at 70 miles, including shuttles. There is just too much atmospheric drag. The ISS orbits at about 200 miles up. The shuttles used to dock with that, and boost it up when it dropped too far.

Out of all four of those supposed records, I'll tell you that only 1 is true; highest parachute jump. Fastest human ever is Bill Weaver (accidental;aircraft ejection). Longest duration of freefall is Eugene Andreev. And highest balloon ascent was a manned-balloon in Project Stratolab, roughly around the same time as Excelsior, maybe a bit after.
