Jazz is a bit of an odd duck. It repeats itself, but it stays fresh. It doesn't really use the clearly-defined sections of more modern music, instead opting to just loop the same piece of music over and over again. So what's its deal? Why does it work? The answer to that lies in the 32-bar form, the secret to jazz music's unique sound and structure.

The jazz band at my high school performed in the last assembly and the drummer took it upon himself to place his 8-measure improv solo at the very end when everyone else had already stopped playing. Needless to say, improvisation really is beautiful. 😂

The repeated phrase at the end is called "a vamp", a tag is even shorter bit of melody that is tacked on at the end of a 8- or 12- or 16-bar section, giving it an unusual length (say, 10 or 14 instead of what normally would be an 8 bar section). Played enough bebop with old-timers in New York to know what I'm talking about.

It’s not just jazz. It’s traditional pop as well, which have their origin in old Broadway show tunes from composers like Berlin, Porter, Kern, Gershwin and Coward. Pop standards and jazz standards at similar but different. I’m more partial to traditional pop standards than jazz standards. I like Jazz too.

i went trough the trouble of using some one's account to thank you 12tone for talking on this subject. I was insecure when creating stuff of myself, yet it iches so much to do so. I'm pretty much of a nube on guitar (5yrs in jazz isn't much) so it is hard to bring variation where needed and even harder to put my finger on the format used in jazz, because of the changes. So this video is like making chinese understandable.. lol. THNX !!

Really interesting topic on this one. But yeah, jazz is all about improvisation. May it be on the melody, the chords or the rhythm, you just never get tired of it because it's always something new and unpredictable. The idea of "composing" a jazz sounds almost off; a genre that has been extended and saturated until the most bitter end? It looks almost like there is nothing interesting to take from it. But when you are on a jam, playing the same old giant steps or autumn leaves, oh boy things just flow. It's awesome in a way that you don't fully get it until you are there playing. Anyway, great video as always, thanks for it 12 tones!

Yeah, it's hard to talk about composing a jazz song. I think of it more like making a backing track: You're creating a framework, but you're not responsible for what happens on top of it. A lot of early jazz songs weren't even written to be jazz songs: They were written for musicals, then jazz folks started playing around with them.

I always find the jazz debate of structure vs free to be somewhat simple to solve. A jazz song, to be a song, needs to have an idea, not necessarily set in stone but something to let folks know what you're playing (otherwise bossa songs would just be a mess haha) How can push music and break boundaries without any set?

3:06, Lullaby of Birdland, again. You really like that song, don't you? :D It's great!

I was one of the first jazz songs I ever performed, so it's kinda burned into my brain when I think about jazz. It's pretty nice, though!

12tone Yeah, dude! I get what you mean! I play it with my quartet, just a beautiful song in general! Anyway, excuse the barrage of comments as I'm discovering your great videos!

So if the song is rigidly composed is it still "jazz"? I'm saying this because from what you're saying it's all about function. So, if my song uses Quartal and secundal harmony without true "function" how would the "jazz" work? Would I still be able to call it jazz?

I'm honestly really bad at defining genres. I like to think in terms of rigid structures, and it's really hard to do that with genres because the lines between them are super blurry. It's really case-by-case, and I can't say that something is or isn't jazz without listening to it, and even then different people might disagree on whether or not it counts. I know a lot of vocal jazz is fairly rigidly composed and is still considered jazz, so it's not outside the realm of possibility, but when I think jazz I think significant improvisation, so I'd be skeptical of anything too prescriptive. Basically though, I think you can call anything jazz that you think is jazz, just be prepared for people to disagree sometimes. That's perhaps not super helpful, but genres are messy.
