We're continuing with outdoor work this week before all the spring greenery explodes. We're demolishing the rotten porch behind the old cantina and enjoying the start of spring.
We also got to test the CIGMAN CD-60 bilateral dual laser meter and we're very much in love with this little tool. If you'd like to get your own CIGMAN CD-60 click here:

We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

It looks nice and shady and secluded in behind the chicken coop. I love the dappled light filtering through the trees.

The "cantina" looks to be a rare gem just waiting for love. The view from the "patio" is lovely and situated among the trees is just the very best. As for the digging out the floor - wow that will be major. I loved hanging my clothes from the balcony while staying in a small house in Northern Italy--they smelled fresh.

Yeah not looking forward to taking out that floor with a hammer drill! Might need to bring in bigger tools then ;-) Good thing it can wait a few years.

In regard to the height of the old stables, you may be able to get a variance, depending on the use of the room. If it is only occasional use, not permanent habitation I would not worry about it. FIve centimetres is a small difference. Italy has "condoned" entire buildings built without permits...

What a difference removing that porch makes, you have achieved great progress on all fronts! Even Velluto is slowly moving closer to acceptance (after recovering from the shock of seeing that , that... DOG being familiar with you). Sending his shadow into your home to test safety and comfort levels was a brave move, now he retreats to consider his options. He already approves your cookery skills and accepts you as good providers, hopefully soon he will accept you as "his" humans.
@storiesfromthecascina

He seems to be spending more time around the house lately, studying us or just sitting together in the sun - at a safe distance, off course. As soon as any dog comes near he's gone. Can't disagree with him entirely :-P

as we understand from the locals here the arches are mostly to make the construction stronger. but drainage might be a part of that.

I think the house with the rotten porch would make a lovely residence. It is so private in the back where you were mowing. The flowers are so delicate looking. I would never pick them as they are lovely where they are growing. Kitty does not like noise. I laught when she jumped when you hit the wall in the cow barn. She knows to come when you are not making those crazy banging noises. This was a very nice video.

What a great video! How lovely to have family and friends to help make memories of your home. In years to come that time spent together will become a much treasured talking point. You are never too young to help with diy and gardening! You certainly got stuck into some work this week! I see your bulbs you put around the courtyard are starting to prepare to flower. There’s certainly plenty of flora and fauna putting on a spring display! The amazing amount of birdsong, it’s quite astounding. Removing the porch has made such a difference, it just looks tidier, yet another place to put a bench to sit and have a coffee. You really are very spoilt for where to sit and watch the world go by! ❤

@storiesfromthecascina

we imagine so, they were built more or less simultaneausly. the good news would be if the floor wasn't reinforced concrete but given there are no cracks at all in that floor after half a century of heavy use, I suspect that they are.

Wonderful to see a little boy bravely helping at work, today's children generally sit staring at their smartphones and get bored, and here's a pleasant surprise. The building immediately looks better without the pergola and with the area cleared. Nature, beautifully awakens to life with many colors, a wonderful sight. Velluto is getting bolder and bolder to look into the house, maybe give him a bowl with something fragrant for the hallway? beautiful cat of him, I hope that soon he will feel at home. I cannot get over the beauty of your place! All the flowers and plants budding and blooming on that walk... I would wander for days. I can't help thinking what I would do with a place like that if I were able again. That area around where you took down the pergola had a small trough, probably for animals or something. As you were cleaning I was imagining it as a bubble fountain for bird and wildlife(or the cat), with the newly redone porch and pergola. I love the Italian style! You are so fortunate to have found what you want while still young and healthy. It probably seems overwhelming at times. But what better way to spend your time?

Even though you are so busy, I find watching you two working together so relaxing. I must say, I was glad to see the ivy coming down, I hate it! It covers beautiful buildings and trees, and will eventually take over everything, smothering everything in its path! Let the land and trees breath and the buildings show their glory! Sorry about the rant, but it has been building up for quite a while and just took now, watching it come down, to come out. Again, loved the video!

Hello from Melbourne, Australia :) I have been watching since your very first video and it was a great surprise this week to hear the familiar Aussie accent in your recent guests. I wanted to ask, with such a big project, and so much to do, how do you prioritize your tasks each week? Do you have a plan that you’re following or are you making it up as you go along? Loving your videos, thanks for sharing your journey x
@storiesfromthecascina
@storiesfromthecascina 6 месяцев назад
We have a few main goals for every month that we strive towards, but a lot of what we can do also depends on the weather and other things that are partly out of our hands (such as the permission process for renovating in Italy, and the availability of professional tradespeople). I'd say it's a mix of being clear on what has the most urgency and going with the flow. It's rare that anything get's done exactly by the time we had in mind, but in the end it does all get done :-)

When you'll rebuild the roof of the barn, I hope you will do it in stone, as it originally was and as you still can see on the rim of the roof, rather than in clay tiles, which do not really suit this kind of historical building. It will be a bit more expensive, but it is so much nicer and sympathetic to the building tradition of these areas.

We definitely hear you but there are a few reasons why we won't be going that route (even though we agree the stone roofs are absolutely beautiful and something to be preserved when they're there). It's a really interesting and valuable point you're making so I'll take the time to answer in detail ;-) We have friends nearby who were lucky enough to have the stone roof still in place and they have restored it beautifully. However, even when all the stone tiles are still there, it's much more expensive to renew the roof with insulation etc than putting on roof tiles. It's a specialised job that requires specialised workers and takes at least triple the work hours to complete. In our case we'd have to buy a complete stone roof and that is, sadly, simply not within our means. Also, with the added weight of stones and new insulation we'd need to put in all new beams to carry the load (adding to the cost and taking character on the inside). The marsigliesi tiles that are on our cantina roof have been there sinds the early 1930s so we feel they have also become part of the history of the house and as such they don't feel out of place to us. A third consideration is this: the south side of that roof is one of the few places where we can install solar panels on the property and to cover a natural stone roof with solar panels is just a shame (sadly we're not allowed to put solar panels on the ground where we are). We have two buildings where the stone roofs are still intact (the chapel next to the house and our off-grid cabin in the woods), and there we will do everything we can to keep it that way ;-)

@@storiesfromthecascina That is a shame, but I understand the constraints. I am no expert but perhaps there's a way to redo it that would allow for a change of tiles to stone ones if one day you'll decide to do so. Before taking a final decision I would suggest - if you haven't done so yet - to check with the Association Canova. They are based in Ossola valley and they provide advice for sympathetic restorations of traditional architecture, especially in Piemonte, where they are based. Good luck!

Great clean-up. But I do hope you will restore the porch with something similar rustic. And plant a grapevine tree or two. And put a large wooden bench beneath it to enjoy that magnificent view. Perhaps open up that view too by cutting back some withering trees.

as mentioned in the video, that is the plan! bur it will be a while because first scaffolding will need to go up to lay a new roof 😊

i'm not sure what you're trying to say but if it is "women should cook and clean" i can tell you that we divide cooking and cleaning between us and that works really well for us 😉
