(Part 1 of 2) We bring you along to one of the most impressive collections of rare tropical fruits in the U.S. If you are a collector yourself whose interest is in rare tropical species - you might have already heard of our latest tour host, Adam Shafran of Sanford, Florida. If you haven’t yet heard about Adam & his work - prepare to be blown away with some valuable information & some wild new introductions to some very special fruit cultivars! Jaboticaba varieties! Pitangatuba fruit! Lemon Drop Mangosteens! & So Much More!
We invite you to trek along throughout his grove to visit with countless different species of Plinias, Eugenias, Annonas, & other special genus/genera that grow well in his 9b climate in central Florida. What makes this location even more special is the attention to cold tolerance. Each of these varieties featured can withstand temperature as extreme as 25 degrees - 105 degrees Fahrenheit (with some appropriate protection methods depending on hardiness.)
Let’s all count ourselves pretty lucky to have been given the green light to come back with the camera while we visit with our friend - to immortalize the incredible dedication of this fruit collector. If you are anything like us - beware - this hobby is considered to be quite a contagious activity, We’ve been continually adding to our own obsessive collection ever since buying our first Jaboticaba & chances are this video will likely inspire you to start a small collection of your own or why not add a few more?
PART 2 WILL BE COMING VERY SOON! BE SURE TO SUBSCRIBE & CLICK THE NOTIFICATIONS BELL, SO YOU CAN GET THE LATEST FROM US!

lol i show them the world of rare fruit that i have created, and they still must ask, "where's the whacky tabacky"....sorry folks, they don't allow that in FL...more power to ya if you're growing it, but I choose to grow stuff that isn't already being grown by a ton of growers world wide, and hasn't been mastered yet. I'd rather create a new market, than participate in one that's already saturated.

Next time you're in Costa Rica, you should check out our farm, south Pacific side between Dominical and San Isidro del general. We now have about 220 species, and had the first Dabai to fruit in CR last year. We have seven pure species plus 3 hybrid species of Durian. The first kutejense and graveolens to fruit in CR are on the trees. We have some far out things like thornless Salak (snake fruit) and some nice hybrids growing well... I am working on tropical grapes also, testing some very promising varieties. jesseblenn at Gmail.

Thank you for your most interesting informative video Pete and Adam. I was intrigued to see if Adam was Australian with his name. We have Flying foxes in Australia, they eat fruit and other plant matter, and occasionally consume insects as well. They locate resources with their keen sense of smell. Most, but not all, are nocturnal. They navigate with keen eyesight, as they cannot echolocate. They have long life spans and low reproductive outputs, with females of most species producing only one offspring per year. Their slow life history makes their populations vulnerable to threats such as overhunting, culling, and natural disasters. Six flying fox species have been made extinct in modern times by overhunting. Flying foxes are often persecuted for their real or perceived role in damaging crops. Yet they are ecologically beneficial by assisting in the regeneration of forests via seed dispersal. They benefit ecosystems and human interests by pollinating plants.

Love flying foxes and they love my figs. It was a cool Spring and mild Summer so my figs are very late and haven't ripened yet. With only a few weeks to Autumn frosts I may not get any edible figs and as a consequence no flying fixes either this year.

@deathlesszero
@deathlesszero 5 лет назад
why doesn't he mulch around his trees?
@FlyingFoxFruits
@FlyingFoxFruits 5 лет назад
oh there is mulch, the weeds have just oven taken the last layer i put out...and another thing, if you put out too much mulch (which i have before, because we have a neighbor who dumps chips here) it raises the temps up so high, being that it's brown, dead wood, not lush green, water retaining foliage to reduce heat. But i do add mulch all over to stop weeds, especially in the jabo grove like 2x per year or more, it just gets taken over by weeds pretty fast.
@deathlesszero
@deathlesszero 5 лет назад
@@FlyingFoxFruits ah yeah now i can see where the last layer had broken down. maybe too much fresh mulch could cause a lot of heat if piled on too high but i think if its broken down some it shouldn't cause a problem. whenever i dig into my mulch its usually cooler and moist underneath. but yeah grass tends to take over pretty quick if not completely removed especially with how fast organic matter breaks down in florida. other ground covers help keep it out but not for good, lol. Pete actually taught me a lot about that. Anyways your farm is beautiful bro and its badass what you're doing with the rare species

What I love is that he does NOT look like the "type" to be in love with plants... Maybe its the hair, hat, and shirt... But its amazing how different everyone looks that truly love growing and harvesting... I have always loved gardening but have never had a teacher. I try to grow little abundant eatables that give lots of harvest all summer for my kiddos so they can pick and eat as they play outside. Like cherry tomatoes, yellow pair tomatoes, carrots, green onion, chives, sugar snap pees (which are my fav), peppers... Oh and I have a 3 year old passion fruit plant that has been flowering for 2 years now but has not fruited. I have to research on it, Its a beautiful purple flower though.

Great video! I really respect how he acknowledges all the people who helped him out and where his plants came from👍 also has he shipped fruit to Emmy on emmymadeinjapan for her fruity fruits series? I feel like I've heard of flying fox farms before... if not and I'm wrong, that would be a stellar collab!
