@@trulymental7651 It is because we can tell that it's of a tree species that has been extinct from 320 million years, they are fundamentally different from modern trees. These ancient trees are most closely related with modern quillworts, far removed from any tree species alive today. 'Trees' aren't a monophyletic taxonomic group, it's just a catch-all term to refer to a wide variety of disparate plant species that converged upon the shape that we think of as a 'tree' (a trunk with branches to grow much taller than over surrounding plants in order to compete for sunlight).
Incredible! Just wondering how roman ruins from just thousands of years ago are buried under sometimes, metres of soil but this is still sitting on the surface after hundreds of millions of years?!
thats because it was found below at they think a reservoir they were making and would be very deep below. Now its placed at ground level but only some hundered years or so . Ive found trees underground some cast or some just pertified as coal. its kinda strange being in a mine and finding fossilised jellyfish like I have in the past.
Harry thank you so much for doing this video. My sister and I did your Harrogate walking tour back in May and I’ve been looking forward to seeing this video. Good luck with the bike ride. Just a quick question, why such a big backpack, are you homeless.
Wow. That is really cool and that you found a second tree stump nearby is incredible. At first I thought putting a plaque near the tree stump would be a good idea but have changed my mind. Labelling the tree stump would possibly attract the wrong sort of attention. I now believe both trees should be removed and put on display in the Harrogate museum.
I clicked on to see Harrogate, as an Australian, my husband and I owned a cottage in Bishop Monkton a long time ago. I'm pleased that I did, as the tree is remarkable.
slip of the tongue I guess. He meant fossilised, if it was petrified that would be a big piece of coal. Instead that tree decomposed and filled in the hole and as you rightly pointed out is fossilised. you can have petrified trees that are stone but this is not that due to its mineral composition being sand n quartz, which it can only be a in fill cast therefore.
Yes, it really is a beauty. It preserves some of the root system as well as the trunk, and unlike this one, it is prominantly displayed and has an information plaque which includes a picture of what the 'tree' looked like when alive. Well worth a look.
Really special! Scarsville Reservoir? And then forgotten? What kind of tree was it? That old, they might not be 'trees' as we know them but towering pre-conifers. And then they find another one? Holy heck!! Splendid!!
Nice find(s) Harry… and good move bringing in the expert, rather than just adding to RU-vid’s already impressive (oppressive) pile of amateur misinformation! Thank you. Subscribed….
Most RU-vid videos have less misinformation than anything you'll see on TV, you can go to 'rent a expert' and get anyone to back up whatever you want to say.
@@jono1457-qd9ft well I don't know anyone who has been around blah million years. Geologists were wrong about how long volcanic layers take to pile up. Proved by St Helens in the 80s , totally wrong! They haven't proved anything in my mind. You can believe what ever you like.
@@jono1457-qd9ft I gave you a reply it has disappeared. I shall try again. Geologists are frequently wrong, try layers of volcanic ash , according to your lot , hundreds of thousands of years . In reality, St Helens go check the facts, 2 eruptions over 8 years 🤔 slight difference and one is provable by actual eyesight in real time. The other just a guess
@@jono1457-qd9ftwhy would I automatically believe them. Scientists have lied throughout the 20th century, they always assume they are presenting unarguable results. I find that amount of time ridiculous, why would you believe it, think about it . The volcano, St Helens was an example of why you shouldn't take " experts' at their word automatically Use critical thinking and come back.
350 million years old-😂😅😂😅 and you actually believe that and see it as perfectly logical that it could last that long without totally disintegrating?😂😅 common sense tells you that that is impossible. It amazes me at how easily you people are fooled into believing such assinine nonsense. That or you truely have no concept of time, or both.
You have never heard of a fossil? Its a fossil of a tree. He mentioned its a cast of the tree made of sand, which turned to stone. Do you really think scientists could be so naive and yet we have the ability to construct computers and stuff? The man spent his life studying this type of thing and you come along and discredit him without even knowing what fossils are...
320 million. You didn't listen to the video did you? He explained it isn't the actual tree that died 320 million years ago, it's a cast of the tree made from sandstone. Go back to sleep you muppet
@@G.D71you personify asinine. You have no opinion of your own so you attack mine. Hmm. I could have said some people, but it is a comment on RU-vid which didn't need deconstructing by you, thank you. Get a life
