Max explores a tragic aviation accident involving the crash of a N8924Y, a Piper Twin Comanche shortly after its new owner purchased it. The pilot was flying the aircraft home when he encountered various challenges, including fatigue, pressure to return home quickly, and low experience in the specific aircraft model. The episode delves into the circumstances surrounding the crash, highlighting common factors seen in similar accidents.

The pilot attempted to troubleshoot the landing gear problem while hand-flying the aircraft in dark night conditions. Ultimately, the crash was attributed to the pilot exceeding the aircraft's critical angle of attack while troubleshooting the landing gear indication, resulting in an aerodynamic stall at low altitude. The episode serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safety, decision-making, and preparedness in aviation. It honors the memory of Rob Prestininzi and underscores the need for pilots to prioritize safety over external pressures.

Where do you begin here? The fact that he was picking up a new to him plane that he was very unfamiliar with and didn’t even do enough “homework” beforehand to be familiar with the fuel system, says a LOT! A CFII nonetheless! This entire trip home was borderline reckless. Remember that poor decision making can hurt way more people than just yourself. Very sorry for the suffering of his family and friends. Indeed, there are some lessons to be learned here, and hopefully this story will save someone else from a similar fate.

Safety pilot in type, thorough pre-flight briefing, checklist etc. should be standard for this operation by an "experienced" pilot. Poor decision-making all around. A whole Eastern AL crew put their L-1011 in the Everglades in a similar situation.

The EAL L1011 was also the result of an autopilot that disconnected with only 10 lb of force. A night approach over the darkness of the Everglades did not help either. Tragic accident brought about by a burned out bulb. Ultimately, responsibility ends at the left seat.

I must say, I hadn't considered trying to swap the bulb. Great tip! I'm curious though why the gear couldn't be felt to extend, or the noise, or the sudden change in drag requiring more power. The guy didn't seem to be flying the aircraft at all. I'm amazed at how little connection pilots seem to have with their aircraft (then again, that's probably why they crash). Not knowing procedures such as alternate gear extension, is unforgivable.
