The reason you shouldn't open one gate is because people hit the closed gate and over time the gate wears away where it is continuesly hit and that is why the gates leak, look at the gates closed and see where its leaking next time, that gap is where the wood is worn away. So next time you see a gate leaking g badly, you know why. Just a little advice of my years of boating.

@@rogermcd9918 I do know that Roger! If I couldn't handle the boat and was bashing the closed gate all the time I would open both, or tell the CRT lock volunteers that they are doing it wrong! But luckily enough I can handle my boat and I don't have to embarrass myself and tell the lock volunteers how to do their job!

@@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle I'm glad you can "handle your boat" but if you read properly what l said, l was making a point, because as you also know hiw bad the gates get damaged and leak so bad. If you wanted to take my point personally, its up to you, but it is bad practice, that is my point!!

I prefer to take my time out here, and discover as much as I can about the canals or rivers, and all the surrounding villages and towns that I go through! Lionel Walter Rothschild did a lot for Tring, but it obviously didn't go down well with the rest of his family. He was the oldest son but he was dis-inherited and put on a pension! When I saw them Cows running along the towpath, I was too far away from Aitch to jump on. So I had to run for it! Look after yourself and hope to see you on the next one! PS. I did see a bit of another comment you made about watching some older vlogs, but for some reason youtube won't let me answer it!

That's exactly my thinking! If a day comes when I start hitting the closed gate, or there is a byewash pushing me about as I approach the lock, then I will definitely open them both! Because I wouldn't want to damage the gates!

@@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle well the route up to it is nice 😉. Still, you’re in a good area. Where you are now was my first intro to canals and have been returning that way for most of my life. Pitstone swing bridge may be a tad challenging if you’re on your own though.
