Name: Venice (Venezia) Location: Venice, Vento Region, Italy, Europe  Venice, often referred to as "The Floating City," is a historic and picturesque city located in northeastern Italy.  It is renowned for its unique geography, built on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges.  Venice's history begins around 5th-7th centuries AD when people from the Italian mainland fled to the islands of the Venetian Lagoon to escape invasions and barbarian raids.  By the 9th century, Venice had become a significant maritime power in the Adriatic Sea and beyond, establishing trade routes with the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world.  Venice reached its zenith during the period of the Venetian Republic, which lasted from the late 9th century until 1797.  Grand Canal is the main waterway of Venice, lined with beautiful palaces, churches, and historic buildings.  Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most famous bridge spanning the Grand Canal, known for its arched design and bustling markets.  Piazza San Marco is main square of Venice, surrounded by St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the Campanile (bell tower).  Venice is also celebrated for its annual events, such as the Venice Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia) and the Venice Biennale.  The city's unique charm, artistry, and historical significance make it a beloved destination for travelers seeking a glimpse into its rich past and vibrant culture.
