Pulled from a ’55 Imperial, this 331 cid Gen I Hemi came to Southern Marine and Automotive covered in rust and in need of serious help. I have always had a special place in my heart for the 331 1st Gen Hemi, so to see an engine builder that can build a 331 on the cheap that makes 300-310 HP, that's just awesome.

300-310 hp I believe it should make 1hp per cubic inch easy. Beautiful motor there’s nothing like an early Chrysler hemi

originally they were 7.5:1 motors with less than 0.400 lift, 225 HP

Also, as much as I'd love to have an early 30s hi-boy in my driveway with a 1st Gen Hemi, I think I'd rather have the '55 Imperial that the engine came out of to go along with it.

I need the lower radiator connection off the timing chain cover. Also a 6v starter. I have a 51 Chrysler new yorker

The 340 was "HOT" at 275 H.P. the old 331 Hemi makes 300-310 H.P., think about it, not too shabby.!!!

pretty nice build, but Im confident that a little more time on cam selection would net about 50hp more at the flywheel. Thats with hydraulic flat tappets on a good Howards custom grind. Cost would have the same. I've built a few of these and found that a slightly different approach on cam selection is required. Do not underestimate the cam size based on cubic inches. These engines will respond to more cam than a wedge. Keep the LSA wider and give it lots of duration.

OOPS! Tamara rides shotgun on my builds and I was logged in on her Kindle. The point is we can make more than 1hp/ci and still look like a restoration. Simple equation with more cam than a 300B, little more compression, larger intake valves and mild port work. Next step is headers and more cam with a lighter rotating assembly. Once you go over .520" lift cost goes up exponentially due to rocker requirements. I have used roller cams with under .500" lift on stock rockers and the torque is phenomenal.

My 54 HEMI has hard unleaded compatible seats right from the factory. I thought the 55 did as well.

Have 354 pollyEngine.Soon order 354 Piston kit.Have 354 Hemi heads.Rebuild thats nice.want litel more Power (390-400)

Strange how steel pulleys are now considered "Old School". Steel is the best. Aluminum is brittle - can't bend, but can easily crack.

George, thanks for the comment. This is one of our older videos and we didn't always have the opportunity to showcase the engine firing up, or the engine wasn't fully finished and able to be started. Check out a bunch of our more recent videos. Those have the engines firing in most. Thanks for watching!
