There are some aspects of the boat's refurbishment that simply can't be achieved (or are difficult to do) while it's in the water so in this video I took the boat from its mooring at Stourport a little way down the river to a wharf where it's been hauled out so that I can work on it on dry land.

I don’t think twiggy looks all that bad, the hull needs cleaned and if you are not swapping motors so does the motor. I agree it’s easier to clean fix replace and paint when it’s sitting on solid ground and not drifting and moving in the water. You have access to all sides without needing to spin it around the dock. Perhaps adding a shallow dagger board on each side mid ship would help it track better. However it might ruin the ability for planing the boat if ever intended to. Good to see you on the water.

What an odd little rudder-like appendage attached to the motor. Never seen one of those before. Could that be why she steers like a hovercraft? I would think when you turn, that thing would act like an oar rather than a rudder. Combined with a fairly flat bottom that could make the boat slew or crab sideways when the engine is turned. Glad to see her out of the water though.

Here in Miami just watching this video makes me shiver. If it's raining here you just put on swim trunks ago about you day as long as you don't have to get in a motor vehicle. Umbrellas optional. I hope Ms. Twiggy gets a really nice part job. She certainly deserves better care than her previous owner gave her.

I have no particular interest in boats, whether they are being restored or gallivanting about in water, but I find your videos strangely addictive. It may be your calm approach to dealing with problems, your sardonic commentary (which never fails to amuse me), or perhaps it is the general interest in learning about practical skills and seeing life on either side of the water as well as upon it. I missed your narrowboat tales when they stopped and I am very pleased that you are now getting into the same sort of saga again with Twiggy. I wish you good fortune in your endeavours.

Not buying a trailer was the right choice. You'd have to 1.) Purchase one. 2.) License it. 3.) Maintain it. 4.) Find a place to store it. Compare that to the one time fee of craning the boat out onto the hard and then back into the water. I think you made the correct decision.
@eekee6034

@katej3z715 3 месяца назад
If David wants to cross from say the Thames to Wales, etc, by land a trailer would be very useful. This is a quite compact boat and modern small, trailers are a cinch. It depends on how varied his journeys are going to be.
@graham6229

I agree. If you are tired of empty trailers lining our streets, then keep the practice you have chosen for the few times you are lifting her out.
@johnshaw4140
@johnshaw4140 3 месяца назад
An E licence is required for towing a trailer depending on When you passed your driving test , and always needed if the weight of the trailer exceeds 4200 kgs . Also be Very aware if the combined weight of Tow vehicle plus trailer and load upon it exceeds 3500 kgs as then you will need another licence category , fortunately I have a truck licence so it doesn't worry me how heavy it is

David: I watched this evening, a day late, but I am glad I waited. As I arrived home this evening, I had a rather annoying text "conversation" with a self-centered fellow. I had had enough. I went to my study, turned on the TV, and your vid popped up. I watched it. When the intro music hit, I felt my blood pressure returning to normal levels. 20 minutes of boating with Twiggy was exactly what the Dr ordered. Thank you. I will now not be on tomorrow's local news.

Rule of thumb with outboards in general; when putting motor in storage for extended periods, shut off fuel line and run the motor till empty. Make sure to leave no fuel standing in the carburetor or engine fuel lines. Also, ALWAYS add fuel stabilizer to the gas. It neutralizes the alcohol in the gas, prevents breakdown of the rubber in the carb, and allows long term storage of your gas with no worries.

David, I noticed when you were starting the outboard that is sounded like you were just yanking on the pull cord. When starting an outboard, you should pull the cord out a bit until the recoil engages with the crank and then pull to start. The way you were doing it is very hard on the engagement dogs and will eventually lead to a failure. Not a big deal if you are getting a newer motor but if you have to keep using this one, it is best to baby the recoil a bit. Good to see you out on the water again.

If you are never going to sail said boat, Twiggy, anywhere but the canals and connecting rivers, then even a 2000 pound second hand trailer is expensive, David. I mean, you bought Twiggy so you could wander around the canals and have a fixed home for your dotage. As to first look at the underside of Twiggy, from where I'm sitting, she looks pretty good to me, David, a bit of understandable moss and such like but it could be worse. Just thinking, Twiggy is like owning a camper van like motor vehicle, small but very useful for short camping trips and Twiggy suits the same as the camper van. She is a wonderful boat, David. I know she needs a bit of modernising and cleaning, but it's not beyond your skills. And like I am often saying, she allows you to have the best of both worlds, actually 3 worlds, including the camper van you fixed up. Again, a lovely interesting video David, thank you for sharing your boating videos with us. It's very much appreciated.

I thought it when you bought it - and am still of the opinion that given your current state of life, buying this thing was one of the best ideas you could have happened upon! Notwithstanding the weather, this looks like a fairly enjoyable trip. And the little boaty seems to be in fairly ok condition! Take your time - but I am looking forward to your future vlogs on the project! Actually, I find it quite nice to have a channel that I really enjoy but that doesn't post all too regularly! Very late (me). Was out of town with a sibling I see twice in a decade, if we are lucky. Saved this until we returned from the cool of San Luis Obispo. Fantastic video and it is amazing to see a tiller that appears to be about as long as a 2 Meter man’s forearm turn your boat on a dime! Size is relative on the small screen of a phone and there was no one to compare it to, standing near so I could be as wrong as I usually am. How long is your boat? I had forgotten about the crane and the cage and the precision of the operator sliding it right over Twiggy. This was entertaining! The boat handled the river just fine. One hopes you will find a decent Honda replacement for just a few dimes, or less. Thank you for taking us along on this adventure!

As "Twiggy" is lifted from the water, a WW2 Admiralty Clyde Puffer is visible, moored in the background - VIC 99, now converted to a static mooring. This is one of the 80ft Puffers, built by John Harker Ltd of Knottingley, and launched in March 1945. She was paid off in 1968, and bought for conversion to a floating restaurant. A fire in 1977caused extensive damage, and she was sold again in 1984 to new owners.

@wickedcabinboy

@newenglandergray3002 - I agree. And combined with that small barn door hanging off the outboard, the directional instability is probably worsened. I was thinking that the addition of a longish shallow skeg would improve her maneuverability.

Maybe there will be a bit of fiberglassing to form a decent keel in the offing. With a Honda outboard that starts without disassembling the carb after several months not running...what is the rush to get an electric start??? I haven't seen that outboard being temperamental nor "dropping dead" at any time on these vids..... Perhaps a "Kort nozzle" prop guard (as used in Lifesaving rubber ducky outboard engine installations ) mounted to that outboard rather than that homemade "rudder" extension may be the way to go.....?

Thanks for the video - I find it fascinating! As a Canadian boater (sail) in my region we need to pull out every fall as things ice over! Your video raise so many questions for me - how often do you need to pull, how long does anti fouling last for you, does the motor need a sacrificial anode? how about bottom end of the motor maintenance (must be a way to get it off easily while in the water??!!) Good luck - can't wait to see more videos of the work on the hard!!

Get a 12 volt trolling motor and mount it sideways on the bow instant bow thruster. Fold it up on the front deck when not needed. Really enjoy your videos!

As the owner of a similar aged and slightly larger (23ft) aft cabin cruiser, it's fantastic to watch your progress and solutions to the same issues that I am trying to overcome. Keep at it and keep filming your efforts.

British weather is just as reliable as ever, I see. *Boat* (n): A hole in the water, surrounded by fiberglass, into which money is thrown.

Twiggy is a survivor. Unrestored, just neglected enough(prior to your ownership), but still keeping the water on the outside. Thats a perfect candidate for a deep maintenance/refreshening. I truly think you found a perfect balance of "still floating" and "picking it off with your nail". Looking forward to the future videos!

Since you're thinking of swapping out the motor for an electric start one. If I were in your rain boots, I add a couple of horses (HP) to it as well. Great video!

Congrats on a safe “flight”! Always nice to be able to stand beside a boat when doing a bit of work vs treading water or holding one’s breath…😊 Two quick items: definitely block the rear of the hull before climbing around on there too much. Looks like a lot of weight aft of the wheel pivot point. And, be sure to check and service the impeller in the outboard that circulates cooling water. The rubber blades harden, crack and break over time, greatly reducing efficiency if not clogging up the works completely. Unpleasant sounds and big repair bills usually follow soon after…

While the boat is out of the water have a specialist check that the pitch and prop are appropriate for your needs.

Really surprised you had you use a Crain to get it out would have thought a boat that could been just put on a trailer at a boat ramp but was fun to watch in fly

He still would have needed a crane to set the boat on blocks for maintenance.
