34053 "Sir Keith Park", owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd, has returned to Herston Works in the Isle of Purbeck for the final stages of its ongoing overhaul to be completed.
34053 emerged from Herston Works, the base of SLL, as a complete locomotive for the first time in preservation in 2012. After periods as a resident on the Severn Valley Railway, and subsequently the Swanage Railway, the Bulleid pacific entered service on the Spa Valley Railway as a resident in the autumn of 2020 before being withdrawn from service in 2022 upon the expirey of its boiler ticket. Since then, the locomotive returned to Herston Works for dismantling and the overhaul of the chassis, before leaving the site for a boiler swap. The boiler now on 34053 has come from 34010 "Sidmouth", another Bulleid pacific from the SLL fleet, while 34053's will be overhauled for use on 34010 which is much further off completion.
34053's return to Herston marks the beginning of the final stages of this overhaul, and the subsequent push to have the locomotive completed and returned to traffic promptly. Regardless, the restoration and overhauls of their fleet could not be achieved without support. More information about, and any donations to, SLL can be found/done here:
