3:30 the CAT manual says to put the piston rings 120 degrees apart but doesn't mention a particular absolute orientation relative to the piston. BTW also note that some rings have a top and bottom so be sure not to install it upside down. According to the CAT manual the middle and top ring are supposed to have a UP marking, but the rings in my CTP 9Y7212 piston kit only have an UP mark on the middle ring.
The manual talks about the "position of the pin bearing" - Type B (wide taper) - Bearing junction and locating hole are 155 degrees apart(not directly across from each other). Bearing junction and locating holes must be assembled in the top half of commecting rod eye (12.5 +/- 1 degree above the horizontal centerline) as shown. It seems to say that the wrist pin needs to be inserted in the connecting rod at a certain angle but as far as I can tell it's perfectly round so that's not making any sense to me
The manual also says the connecting rod must be heated to 350-500F to insert the piston pin but I have no issue pushing the pin in just like yours. It's tight but can easily be pushed in by hand. Is it supposed to be so tight that you can only get it in by heating the connecting rod?
@@0698gingerich maybe, although the manual does refer to the straight/narrow/wide taper rods. But do you even know what they're talking about?? BTW the "wear" you show at 0:20 is part of the design. My 3412 rods have it too. I had the machine shop check them and they miced out accurately, and they said that's how all the 3400 series rods look.
They are not directional on most older cat engines but I always try to put the in the same way I took them out. They will go in either way and work just fine. It makes you second guess yourself. This is the only thing I have found in the manual. "NOTE: Be sure the cylinder numbers on the rod cap and rod are the same and are on the same side of connecting rod. Numbers are on the same side of the rod and cap as are the bearing tab slots. If new rods are installed, put the cylinder number on the rod and cap"
