The title explains it all really ! But just to clarify, on the evening of Saturday 28th May 2016, on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway's 'Cotswold Festival Of Steam' the recently restored Merchant Navy 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental' is seen out a fourteen coach special running non stop from Toddington - Cheltenham - Toddington - Laverton - Toddington. The Merchant is captured from three angles as it tackles the slight rise out Gotherington. With the 9F on the rear providing no support, the southern beast is actually hauling an equivalent load of 17 coaches ! A spectacle not to be missed ! As we were having a day off and travelling on the trains this was the only footage I managed to capture.
I hope you enjoy this one off performance.

The 9F was just a trailing load in these shots, no exhaust from the chimney, just the safety valves lifting. Superb!

Yes, a great show from the Merchant and one of the highlights of the year on the heritage scene.

Thanks Bob, usually Clan Line on the Belmond would be your only chance to hear a Merchant hard at work, but a big thanks to the GWSR for rostering this epic gala service.

I rode a Torbay Express in the mid 50's pulled by a Castle with 14 coaches. The engine changed at Newton Abbott with four coaches slipping for Bristol. Lovely vid, this.

Many thanks for sharing , even with P&O working that hard , still sounds tearing paper , just think what a Castle would have sounded like .

Yes, a Castle on that load would of had a great bark, a shame there's only one preserved in running order at the moment.

Excellent to see 35006 actually being stretched. Great footage. I was there on Sunday but my "hand-held" clips when edited will not match this standard.

Thanks Ray, it's probably the only time 35006 will ever be stretched as the line isn't very hilly. I hope your shots came out OK.

Since a Merchant Navy can handle 14 carriages by herself, are you sure the 9F was banking? The extension to Laverton is just a single line, so topping and tailing would be necssary anyway.

The engine on the back is only there to pull it out of it's terminus further up the line. The loco was shut off in this video providing no power at all. Thanks for watching & commenting.

Bit of an over enthusiastic fireman on the 9F - it never stopped blowing off!
@MarshSteamVideosTM
@MarshSteamVideosTM 8 лет назад
Yes, just a tad unfortunately. Fireman on preserved railways are trained a lot differently now unlike the old days.
@matthewpalmer2049
@matthewpalmer2049 3 года назад
Not over enthusiastic, it's called a big fire being built up for when it pulled the train, and it being in touched and needing to cool down, oh and maot importantly, just natural raising steam with the fire not being touched.....

I like the video but it would be interesting to know how it was non-stop as it had to reverse at Cheltenham and Laverton. Presumably the 9F was hauling it in the other direction? I did a hand held video of P & O line leaving Cheltenham on the first shareholders special on 16th May where there was a bit of wheel slip with 12 coaches ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--gRpv8WO0UI.html

The train ran through all stations between Toddington - Cheltenham/ Cheltenham - Laverton ! Obviously the train had to stop at each end, but in reality in was non-stop between one end of the line and the other. Thanks for watching & commenting.

Nice! Fireman on 9f wants his backside kicking for wasting steam though.
@MarshSteamVideosTM

They do waste a lot of steam on this railway, but I think the fireman nowadays are taught different than the old days.
@gadge3902
@gadge3902 8 лет назад
+Marsh Steam Videos™ in fairness to the GWSR crews, it's been a few years since there's been a 9F on the line. Economy of coal and water is still a necessity, but it does take practice.
@JintySteam1

He's not exactly a young fireman though.
@matthewpalmer2049
@matthewpalmer2049 3 года назад
Well, the fireman had built a fire to pull 14 coaches and a merchant. So when it stopped doing the work, and the merchant took over to Toddington, its just the fire still being very hot and generating steam, despite it being not touched, and only water being put in the boiler. Coal isn't being wasted, just a very hot fire that's taking its time to cool.
