I JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNEL AND I AM IN ABSOLUTE LOVE. you inspired me to really get back into shooting. Thank you so much for not only sharing your talent but for helping those who may want to partake in photography!! I have some questions: do you use back button focusing? I’m having trouble being fast in changing my focus points in my camera. Also I assume you do manual white balance?? How would you set that up?? Thank you :)

Ahh thank you!! That makes me so happy to hear that you want to get back into taking photos! I don't use back button focus - I prefer half pressing the shutter. But I definitely use the grid to select my focus point while shooting which I change quite often while I'm taking photos. I just uploaded a whole detailed video about how I focus in case you're interested in checking it out :) And yes, I use manual white balance as well! Just so each photo is the same which makes post processing easier. I normally have my WB at around 5200 and only change it if the lighting conditions/location greatly alters what the WB looks like, otherwise I just leave it as is. If you are shooting in RAW, you can change your white balance in post!

Ive never been a fan of 35mm for portraits, always been an 85 and 135 guy. However, a few of your videos have made me a fan. I find I really like the landscape/horizontal look of the 35mm when shot from the waist up. The shot at 0:47 is fantastic. Im going to rent a 35mm to try out. Thanks

Do you think is there a big distorcion of the face with this angular lens?

With the 35mm you can avoid distortion on your subject's face by not putting them right on the edges of the frame and also by the angle you are shooting. I find the 35mm is just right for portrait photography, the 24mm is where I start to notice distortion issues :)

Hello, Julia!) Your photography work is just amazing. The person who film your videos use manual focus ? If it's AF focus - what adapter for sony a7s do you use? Maybe you can make a video where you make photos on Sony a7s with 24 1.4 and 35 1.4. Can't find this combination on RU-vid. Have a great day and Thank you!;)

love watching your channel after finding you. Question about shooting with 35mm.. do you notice any distortion from using it? I've always heard 70-100mm is ideal because of compression, bokeh, etc. I've started into weddings and am really eyeing a 35mm lens next.

There is a little bit of distortion in the 35mm, but that's why I love that lens so much - it's not a perfect 85mm portrait shot, it has some character to it. As long as you're not putting your subject on the very edge of the frame, you shouldn't have any issues with the distortion making your subjects look funny. Also, I use the 35mm the majority of the day throughout a wedding too! :)

Out of curiosity, did you use an ND filter when recording this video? I can see noticeable vignetting on the upper left and bottom right corners. Not criticising, just an innocent observation.

With the overcast sky in this shoot, what aperture did you tend to shoot at for these portraits?

I shot at f2 for the entire shoot. Even though it was overcast, the lighting was still really bright that day.

So you shoot 35mm focal length to provide some background and then crop the image. Portraits are easy if you have a willing model to pose, entirely different story if you are doing steet photography or taking photos of people that dont love being photographed
