The speakers came together in an interactive discussion with two goals in mind: to integrate the key themes of the day's talks on the perils of 1942 and to highlight points of contemporary relevance of these events. Some major themes that emerged include the uncertainty of the ultimate outcome of the war at the end of 1942, the global nature of both the war and U.S. interests, and fluidity and complexity of America's response to war, the challenges of leadership, and the way in which ordinary Americans proved their mettle. The in-person and online audience participation was very engaging.
Moderator: Richard B. Frank
Guest Speakers: Jonathan Parshall, John C. McManus, Katherine Sharp Landdeck, Craig L. Symonds
(See individual talks in this series for complete speaker bios)

This was an amazing assemblage of first rate historians! We should all be grateful that we have such brilliant scholars who have dedicated their professional lives to educating us about the tragedy and triumph of WWII. If we as a people fail to understand the lessons of history we are doomed to repeat them.

OMG Parshall’s “ehh” hand signal front & center after the NZ 2nd infantry division was described as “the best infantry division in the Commonwealth!”

"Down this road, on a summer's day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This was Oradour-sur-Glane in France."

I've been to Oradour-sur-Glane. Very sad.

With all respect to Mr. Parshall-A book was written on "The Japanese Offensive in the Indian Ocean 1942" by Michal Piegzik.

If you had replaced Nimitz with another person like MacArthur, I can see the Pacific War going horribly wrong. Not badly enough to counter America’s vast naval production, but badly enough to greatly increase the death toll. Nimitz was a man who brought out the best in his subordinates, and that is exactly what a leader should do.

Comparing male and female pilots accident rates while ferrying planes doesn’t tell us much. All are at a junior level and ferry pilots aren’t among the top aviators which isn’t a requirement for menial tasks such as ferrying planes. Instead, for an apples to apples comparison, rank the top female pilots against the top male pilots in simulated combat situations amd classroom performance. Then, pick the best pilots regardless of their sex. Artificially advancing either sex over more qualified pilots ensures both an increased accident rate and mission failure rate.

Which ones? Russia has adapted but still suffer from most of the same issues at the start of their invasion.

Russia has slaughtered Ukraine to the point that their offensive has achieved nothing but blending their troops, weapons and supplies away. The Russians will dictate terms to the West. Ukraine is finished as a viable state.
