Welcome back guys! I’ve daily driven my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness for 36k miles over almost the last 2.5 years. It’s been a good experience! Thanks for watching!
Nice update! Good to know about the simple fix for the headed seats. I now have over 64,000 miles on my 2022 OBW. My latest mod was replacing all 6 of the OEM speakers with after-market speakers. The OEM Subaru speakers are really light-weight and of poor quality. I replaced the two in-dash tweeters and mid-range woofers in the front doors with Alpine S2-S65C speakers, and in the rear door I used JBL Club 64FSL speakers. I would have used the Alpine speakers for the rear doors to match the other speakers, but the Alpine speakers wouldn't fit properly in the rear doors. The most difficult thing doing it yourself is removing the door panels; sometimes you have to pull them so hard that you're afraid of breaking something, but fortunately nothing broke. The sound is now much improved by just changing out the speakers without having to add an amplifier.

Thank you for the information. I’m planning on upgrading my sound system but don’t want to complicate things in an already complicated system. If I want high high end audio I simply put on my Bose headphones when not on the road.
Something I like about the Outback Limited and Touring is the extended leg support. I am 5'10", and I didn't think it would be something that mattered, but I was wrong. The drivers seat is much more comfortable with the extension. I don't know why they don't put it on the passenger seat and use it on all their seats it doesn't look like something that would cost that much.
Looks like Rio Grande bridge on the way to Taos in background. I'm a Big fan of outbacks. Once we drove an Outback from Taos back to San Luis Valley of CO in a wicked snow storm with white out conditions and snow blowing horizontally. ~ Zero visibility but kept car aligned by me hanging head out window to watch right hand road stripe while wife expertly drove with course corrections. OB was flawless. Never had issues with OB while going over Mountain passes in CO and NM during winter. Great cars.
I did a ride along with my dealer to point out the creaky sunroof that they couldn't hear. They replaced the sunroof and found the roof metal had separated from the support structure and the had to send it to the body shop to re-attach it. A little concerning, but still really like the car. We'll see what else comes up. Right now the seat belt and dead pedal both squeak. Also wanted to mention your fuel economy is better because of your altitude. My cars and motorcycle get much better economy when i road trip to Colorado/Wyoming, etc.
That is concerning and I’m glad you were able to get them to properly address it! Horsepower is down at altitude but high MPG might be a fair trade off for that lol.
My wife is a truck girl and drives a newer F-150, THEN we got the 2024 Forester Wilderness and she really likes it. When I showed her a few renditions of the Subaru Baja, well she may not be a bigger truck girl if it's released. 😁
Hey AA- loving my new Outback. 1 week old…already 1300miles. I thought I would be bummed about non-turbo, but turns out I actually don’t mind- it forces me to enjoy the ride (super comfy) and I’m averaging 31 mpg (550 miles range on a full tank), which I really dig! My Outback sunroof creaks too, when driving on bumpy roads, but it goes away when I put pressure up against the sunroof glass. Also, I bought my wife a new 23 GX460 a few months ago, so I can totally relate to your pull to Toyota, especially the reliability. So glad to have the naturally aspirated V8.
Dang, you really do drive a lot lol. I’m glad it’s working out, and yeah 500+ miles on a tank is amazing and much needed for your line of work. I sold my FJ because it had like a 16ish gallon tank and even I was filling it up every other day. Very nice on the GX460! I’ve not looked into this, but I’ve heard you can even PCM tune them like the Ls460 that made something like 380hp out of a very similar engine. Thanks for sharing your update!

The headlights on my 2024 Outback Limited XT are way bright. So bright, in fact, that I am all the time getting flashed by oncoming traffic at night. So during my oil change last month, I asked the service dept to lower the beam just a tad, and they did. Now it looks like my low beam literally reaches about 20 ft ahead of the car. And that makes me nervous driving in White Tail Deer country. So I just made an appt to have them returned to factory specs. I’ll endure the flashes in exchange for being able to see farther down the road in order to spot deer on the side of the road. Otherwise, no real complaints: Well, the phone charger (waste of $$$) overheats my iPhone 15 Pro, the center display can be VERY laggy, the steering assist can feel like a bowling ball rolling down the lane with kid bumpers on the side, and then there’s the occasional and unexpected nose dive breaking for no reason. When I’m using adaptive cruise control with a car in front of me slowing down to make a turn, my Outback will hit the brakes hard even AFTER the car is no longer in front of me. ‘Sup with that, Subaru! I’m waiting on the ‘26 models, hoping for a refresh as well as a possible hybrid version. And with turbo, it’s a no-brainer for me. Thanks for this video!!
I would be most likely be purchasing the non turbo onyx for the increased gas milage possibility, the 2700 tow rating would be sufficient. Second option would be the forester wilderness. A power passenger seat is a must have so that may change my plans.
Im Subaru guy, did with 2 of the 2 x 200k miles, with 3.6R,70k, and in next 10 day will take with closed eyes #4, this time “used”,with 10k miles wilderness, they extrmaly well engienered,reliable with best mpg in any 4x4, but we have consider that symetrical traction has huge adventage on sleepry condition and very helpfull on off road,but not for competition with kind 4Runner etc,but otherwise I was always very confy on icy hwy and long trips, nice video, thank you,and yesss under hood is dusty
I love mine! Never getting rid of it. The problem with Toyota trucks is that they do not drive as nicely on long distances, meaning they are less confortable burr I do miss my Tacoma every now and then. I think this car is an excellent compromise between comfort, daily driver and off road capability, specially if you have a family :)
Yeah, I think Subarus booklet states it’s due at 60k, I’m planning to get mine done right before my $350 coupon is about to expire from the issue I had with the wireless charger braking under warranty. I honestly want to flush it out myself and make a video but the OBD2 scan tool you need to properly sequence you through the relearning steps is way higher end and more expensive than I need for anything else, so I’ll have the dealer do it when it’s around 45k miles.
Even if you get a dealer to service your CVT, it would still make for an interesting video. You could discuss what’s involved, the state of the used CVT oil, pros and cons of getting this done at the mileage you did. CVT maintenance and life span is definitely something to keep on top of for Subaru owners like me. I own a 2023 Outback Touring XT running a CVT.
That’s a great suggestion, and I’ve actually thought about it, but haven’t asked for permission yet! I’ll plan to at least try to get that video when it’s time to change the fluid!
I change the engine oil every 6k miles or 6 months just like the manual says. However I believe it says the Subaru CVT only needs fluid changed every 60k miles. I’ve heard that they say this only to show lower cost of ownership but mechanics would suggest you change it every 30-45k miles. I’m at about 43k miles and I should have a video of it being changed in the next week!
I’ve had my OBW for a year and it’s been great except for two things. First my wireless charger has been replaced three times and still doesn’t work. I’ve given up on it. More significant is the sway bar bushings. They had to be replaced at just 700km on the odometer. I put that down to a fluke but then they had to be replaced again at 15,000 km. I’m thinking this will be an issue throughout the life of the vehicle. If Subaru doesn’t address this permanently or extend the warranty for this issue I’ll be saying goodbye to the Outback when the warranty runs out.
Yeah, I don’t think the wireless chargers have worked for anyone…😬 And what a bummer to have other silly issues like that at such low mileage. What would you replace it with?
Because of the Eyesight on the Subaru’s it costs upwards of $2K to replace the windshield because the Eyesight has to be recalibrated as well, so make sure that you have glass breakage coverage on your Subie’s
It actually doesn’t cost that much especially if insurance is covering it. I do auto glass replacement and I have worked on three 2022 outback’s and a pair of 2023 foresters. The only issue I have had is the new three camera system on the 2023 Subarus since it is now mounted on the windshield instead of in the roof. I will always take the older Subarus without the eyesight. My wife has a 2019 Crosstrek without eyesight. Basic windshield is $350 Canadian out of pocket, for the eyesight it’s around $1200 Canadian.
I’ve been driving my current outback for 11 years and I just passed the 220K marks on it. Obviously it’s a little more demanding in the maintenance now and I’m considering replacing with a Wilderness. It’s interesting to learn about what kind of problems that you encountered. Knowing all that, would you still purchase an Outback Wilderness?
Yeah, all things considered my issues are hardly worth mentioning. In my last update at 30k miles I think I mentioned the depreciation on this compared to had I bought a 4Runner, and that this vehicles added comfort and safety was worth the price paid, IMO. But I also do physical therapy full time and drive early morning interstate/highway sometimes before snow plows so the Subaru has been a very valuable tool for me, and I’m unsure I would have faired as well in any other AWD vehicle.
Thanks for your video 👍🏼. So… have you conducted a full transmission oil service change yet? I also 2nd the idea of no sunroof (a novelty that wears off and is costly to repair and can become noisy and leaky in years to come.

For what it’s worth, and as I plan to (hope) to purchase one of these, listening to the Car Wizard about CVTs, I would change it sooner than the mfr. lists, like every 40,000 miles a day sooner would only be a benefit. FWIW I don't have an outback but it's cousin a 21 Legacy XT Touring. No problems with the wireless charger. Super hot heated seats. Even on the 1 setting I have to turn it off after a while. I did replace the battery with an AGM and was fortunate to have Subaru give me a good faith reimbursement. The OEM ones are JUNK. I also had to have the transmission pan resealed covered under warranty. Wish they used gaskets but Subaru cheaped out. Also had the windshield replaced last week. Not the car's fault though.
I’m glad you’ve had such a good experience minus the gasket sealer issue! I’ve also had my windshield replaced in the past due to the infamous crack some of them get on the lower passenger side. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again to either of us! 🙂
Looking forward to the mileage update. I didn't check the specifics on the Outback Wilderness, but I know on the Forester Wilderness they changed the gearing to give it a bit more useful punch. I see on the Outback version, the mpg is lower than standard XT Outbacks, so I assume they did similar. That and I saw a 0-60 time for the Outback Wilderness at 5.9 seconds, and I think the standard XT is in the 7's. In the Forster, the Wilderness trim imparts a 5 mpg penalty on the highway rating. I drove one, and it didn't feel like there was enough extra punch to justify that big of a drop in rated mpg. It also felt like the suspension and steering were mushier than the standard Forester. I think Subaru missed the mark a bit with the XT by NOT upgrading suspension and brakes (as they did on the old Forester XT). Driving the regular XT Outback was not nearly as engaging as my /14 Forester XT. Maybe it is just more "refined", but it felt more cushy and responses to driver input more muted. (Again, maybe sitting lower translates to muted "seat of pants" feel.) Keep up the good work. Yup, almost Miata time. I'm itching to get the Blizzaks off my BRZ and get back to the summer rubber. It's like going from hiking shoes to ballet slippers.
Yeah, in my GPS testing in my area a wilderness is usually lower mid 6’s and an XT is usually higher mid 6’s, definitely not much improved despite the 4.44 final drive ratio. Yeah, we need to get our fun cars out! That’s really cool that you have a dedicated winter tire for yours. 🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Yeah, I live in the PNW, and my BRZ came with summer performance tires. First car I ever owned that came with those. So, I trusted the advice found in Tire Rack, etc, and realized that summer tires were at risk of damage in the colder days here. At that time, my BRZ was my only choice for a short work commute too. So, I sprung for the dedicated wheels and tires. I typically run those November-ish through mid-March. I think when my summer tires are ready for replacing, I'm going to go for an all-season high performance tire, because it is mostly the temperature driving the need for the Blizzaks. I now have a Forester XT with Cross Climate 2 tires, so if it snows, I can stay home or take that. That said, the Blizzaks on the BRZ worked pretty darn well in 3-5" of snow. Would not mistake it for my Forester, but it could get around.

I drive a 22 limited WRX and paying more than $190 a month for insurance is getting very annoying. I’m strongly considering an OBW or heck, even a Prius Prime just to get rid of those extra payments 😂😅
I don’t blame you! But definitely check with your insurance what your cost would be on other vehicles before you make the switch! In the past I’ve inquired and if I found out it was more than I care to pay that turns me off from the vehicle lol.
You don't buy a Subaru for the level of reliability you get in a Toyota. You buy one for its incredible AWD system. My best friend of 30 years leased a Cross Trek two years back. It had constant, terrible, electrical issues. Sad to say, doubt he'll ever lease another Subaru again.
Glad I bought mine without the package that comes with sunroof and nav, I also skipped the charger, I knew all these things would be a waste. I don’t need built in nav I just use google maps.
Congrats on your new OBW! No I didn’t and it’s held up well! I use to get the front clear bra on both my Tacomas, but for $400+ it feels like a waste. Especially on colors like white or silver that hardly show scratches to begin with. That’s at least my current opinion. If they weren’t so pricey I’d love a clear bra or PPF on everything. If it’s not a financial stress do what gives you peace! 🙂
I have a '23 OBW and I know what you're talking about with the moonroof creaking.. there is some of that going on for me and I only have 6k on it. That and I notice some kind of noise coming in through the vents from time to time. Not sure what determines when that happens. A bit annoying for sure. Appreciate your videos!!
I’m sorry you’re experiencing the same and I haven’t heard of the vent issue before. But at highway speeds even when turned off they do seem to allow airflow at the temperature previously set. Thanks for watching, I’m glad you appreciate them! 🙂
👍🏻 who in their right mind would buy a Subaru. I just saw the worst car you can buy is the Crosstrek. It has expected reliability rating of 99.1. you are never going to get to visit the dealership and spend Saturday in the lounge drinking Free coffee and eating donuts. Just thinking about all the free time I will have to spend on the honey do list makes me nauseous.
I’m unsure about the last gen 15-21 EJ engine STIs, but otherwise I don’t think head gaskets have been a Subaru issue in over 10 years 🤔… correct me if I’m wrong. But I haven’t hear anything about that on the forums.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 just kidding bro I think they've sorted that out a few years ago. I was looking for a Forester in the NL but they come with mild hybrid on the 2.0L (the only option) which is not acceptable when parking this car under my house .....
I know the Chevy Bolts for a short while had a warning/recall to not park within like ~50’ of buildings because they had a few issues that needed sorted out…lol.
I have to admit that the last loaner Subaru that I had was a Limited XT and it got the same mpg as my Forester, but as soon as I can, I’ll be selling my Forester and going back to Toyota
That’s pretty impressive, it’s also equally impressive but more so sad how many loaners you’ve needed these past few months. 😅 I don’t blame you, I still really enjoy my Outback, but I’m starting to miss Toyota. But also, I like new vehicle experiences and again it’s basically the one and only thing I save up to splurge on lol.
Hmmm. Why? Our family has owned several Toyotas of all types over the years, but since we bought our '22 OB XT, we've never looked back. We're 'mercenaries', not fan bois of ANY automotive brand, and we go for the best overall bang for the buck that meets our needs. There's nothing in the current Toyota product lineup that is pulling us back to buy one, and that includes Honda (we owned two of those), too.
@@eskieman3948 We owned Toyota’s for 40+ years when my wife told me that she wanted an Outback, so for her 50th birthday I bought her one. It’s an AWSOME vehicle. So in 22 I decided to sell my RAV 4WD Limited with the 3.5 V6 and a 5spd automatic transmission. I then bought a Forester Touring. I’ve had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH MY SUBARU FORESTER TOURING. I get LESS fuel economy with the GUTLESS 2.5L 182 hp 4 banger than I did from my 268hp 3.5L. My Forester gets 25mpg on the highway with the cruise control set on 75mph, yet my 3.5L V6 RAV got 28mpg. YES, I Love the comfort of my Forester, but I HATE that the damn thing is in the shop all of the time.
screw the blooming sunroof-- I don't want one of those stupid things on ANY of my vehicles.. and all the phone crap should have been left OFF too. GET yourself an OBD reader-- then you can plug in and tell if something is bad or fuses etc... and check other things too..
The service guys thought it was related to the USBs and I assumed the wireless charger maybe malfunctioned as the original issue that blew the fuse. If anything else comes of it then I’ll share that!
It wouldn’t be a Subaru if there WASNT any creaks or rattles. Never been a Subaru that didn’t have some sort of noise. I guess it’s a built in ‘authentic’ off road feeling feature 😂
