You might be talking about the square things on the edge of the deck? Those are the housing for the intake supply fans. Huge motors and fans inside the boxes on the deck supplying fresh air to the cargo spaces. All of the equipment when loading and unloading emit mad amounts of exhaust so fresh air is needed.
