Very cool 360 view. First one for me. Thank You for all the trouble you go thru to post a video this cool. And thanks for the look around your tent. It's like being there.
Thanks for the feedback! It's hard to find the right moments to video and share from my travels. This event worked out well, but in retrospect, I wish that I had opened the side of the tent or taken the camera out into the storm for another perspective. You can see the follow-up video (normal instead of 360) on my channel, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html . Toward the end of that video, you can see the crazy winds that lasted through the late evening. Cheers! 👍 --QM
@JB GTO Yes, the orange and white cover that you see in the video is the rain fly. The tent's upper construction is all mesh, so it's just a light grayish color... almost transparent. 👍 --QM
Been caught in the rain in a forest without umbrella tent or anything. Just regular clothes! I guess that even more magical. Getting pelted by huge raindrops and lightning flashing is scary but after it is over and you are home and dry it is a good memory
finally a rain camping video that is true to its name, tired of getting fooled by people posting vids with the same name but they end up only showing a lot of cooking and very less rain...i am a fan keep up the good work...
Same it's litteraly the best. You're just sitting in this thin rain proof tent staying completely dry and rain is pattering down while you get in your comfy sleeping bag and listen and drift to sleep
Thanks for the feedback! The 360 camera is great for settings like this. I have a few other 360 videos on my channel that you might enjoy. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback! These 360° videos receive mixed opinions because most viewers don't realize that they need to move their phone around to see in the 360° space. The other common problem is that RU-vid usually starts the stream in a lower resolution; the best experience can be seen by manually selecting the highest resolution. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
I love this. I do a lot of solo backpacking in the Eastern Sierras and along the PNW and I always love camping in the rain. It’s not so great when I have a long hike to get to camp, but once I’m all set up, it’s heaven. I hope you didn’t get too wet.
Thx for the feedback! I agree... I usually love camping in the rain, whether it's in a tent or a hammock. There is something so peaceful about watching the rain (or storms) all around you, but still be dry and watching it from cover. However, I don't particularly like nasty thunderstorms or gale-force winds like this event. It's all good if I can pack up the gear in one piece. I stayed mostly dry through this storm and the tent fared pretty well... I only had a few drops of rain blowing in through the peak vents, and some of my tie-outs on the rain fly ripped through. I was just happy that my Honda Super Cub stayed upright through the event... many other bikes blew over or sank in the soft mud. Good luck on your hikes and camping trips! I'm planning to do several trips this fall and winter, so stay tuned! Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! Did you watch the follow-up video of the track activities later that day and the wind damage (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html) ? The wind was really impressive... my tent fared better than most, but I did lose some of the tie-out loops on the rain fly later in the afternoon because of the sustained 40+ mph winds. The wind caved in the side of the tent and I couldn't straighten or lift it up because of the wind pressure (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html ). Cheers! 👍 --QM
Steve H I would like to know what tents hold up to wind and heavy rain storms etc every tent I’ve had really moves and the poles buckle in and out, water proof but I have found fly rips around zip areas it’s like they go brittle In Australia sun ☀️, they are all good to begin with but only last about 6 weeks of use before they start to rip grrr, the old dome style tents lasted years of use but these newbies are flimsy and expensive
If you want to test a tent, that’s what a test should be. It’s always fun to have some excitement, when you’re doing boring work! Best tent ⛺️ video I’ve seen. Now I know what to look for, in buying a tent! Thanks!👍🏻
Thx for the feedback! The follow-up video from outside the tent later that day is here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html and you can see the wind loads caving in the front wall of the tent at this marker: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html . The wind damage around the track was really impressive that day. Luckily, the following day was beautiful for the races... sunny and hot with light winds. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! I usually enjoy rain storms in a tent or in a good jungle hammock (with rain fly). That storm was a little different because of the wind and lightning. Most of the lightning had subsided before I started recording, so it was just the rain and wind in this video. My last several trips to COTA have been accompanied by crazy weather... just odd luck, I guess. 👍😉 --QM
Frankly, it's amazing just how popular these 'tent in a thunderstorm,' and 'RV during a blizzard,' etc. It's just something calming about seeing a person inside during a heavy storm. Interesting.
Agreed! I never thought this 360° video would be the most popular video on my channel. I was bored, wet, and trying to keep myself busy while waiting out the storm that day... so I decided to try out something new. I got a lot of confused and annoyed viewers/comments at first until people realized that this was a 360° video. They were moving their phone and thinking that MY camera skills were bad... complaining that they were staring at my feet during the whole video! 🤣👍 --QM
Took my wife and 3 kids to Alaska summer of 1985. 5 days to Skagway and 5 days back. Rained every day and night strait. Camel brand nylon tent didn't leak. Amazing all the modern tents.
I'm shopping for my next tent because this one suffered a few injuries on that trip. I'll probably invest in a mountaineering tent that can handle 40+ mph winds a little better. Modern materials are really impressive with their durability and weight savings. 👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard In high wind and rain, few tents do well. If camping in wind like that go for a heavy canvas army type tent, pine bough floors, on higher than surrounding ground with lead off trenches. I have done what you attempted and got wet too. Good luck
@@bryanswenson1452 Agreed... that's the tried-and-true solution to the problem. However, it creates another problem... I couldn't get all of that gear on my little Honda Super Cub! 🤣 --QM
@@QuasiMotard oh come on man. That tent your getting your but wet in is large enough for the Fourth Ward in Mormon State Utah. If your traveling that way get a smaller tent. Less water will come in.
Thanks for the feedback! I have a couple of other 360° videos that you might find interesting: - Zip Line Ride in 360 Virtual Reality: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8rtsuzaqIE.html - Rykin' the Austin Hill Country in 360° video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QG1yU0aTyVI.html Cheers! 👍 --QM
Spent a night in a tent on a ridge at about 7,500' in White Mountain Wilderness,New Mexico. Pitched the tent on a patch of wild garlic. All night long the rain came down in torrents, lightning, thunder and the wind howling. Loved it!
Oohhh... that sounds like fun! I hope to take some extended road trips next year, so maybe I'll have an opportunity to get some altitude camping. Cheers! 👍 --QM
I'm glad you enjoyed it! This 360 video turned out really well even though it was a bit boring. I have a couple of other 360 videos that you might like. This is a 360 view of a ZipLine ride in Austin: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8rtsuzaqIE.html , and this one is a Ryker ride in the Texas Hill Country: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QG1yU0aTyVI.html . Thanks for sharing! I was kind of nervous with this week's forecast showing thunderstorms during our camping trip but thankfully we won't have wind like this! You took it like a champ! My nerves are now at ease lol
I like the sound of the wind and rain, but I could do without the tent collapsing on top of me. 😉 The rain finally disappated just a short time after I stopped the video, but the winds persisted until around 9PM that evening. The tent fly and several of my guy lines were shredded from 40+ mph winds throughout the day. It definitely wasn't boring! 👍 --QM
Just an idea, but before your camping trip, stop by a hardware store and buy some rope, and some rebar that you can fashion into heavy duty tent stakes that can go through rock and tree roots, and also purchase some T-Rex tape. Tie lines from your tent poles and a line to each stake and slip knot the lines from the poles to the lines to the stakes and pull them taught and secure them with the tape. Make sure the stakes are hammered into the ground with the points going toward the tent to add more resistance to bring pulled out. Your tent won't go anywhere.
Agreed! Those could great hacks for guylines. The problem with this particular tent is that the rain fly doesn't have strong loops for guy lines, and there isn't any access to the tent poles underneath the fly. I certainly would have guyed out the middle of the poles to help with those crazy winds... both of the main corner loops were ripped through on the leading side of the tent that day! 😉👍 --QM
Yeah, that was a crazy storm. The timing was terrible because everyone came out for the races, but many people called it quits before race day because of the wind damage. If you haven't seen the follow-up video from later that morning, you can see that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html . Sunday (race day) was beautiful and the races weren't affected by the previous weather at all. 👍 --QM
The falling rain while sitting or dozing off in a tent are sweet music to my ears mate! The tent itself looks kinda big for a single person. Stay safe mate, loves HAYLIEE (AUSTRALIA)
Wow I've never knowingly seen a 360 vid before - thanks for that! This really took me back to hiking across austria in the early 00's. One night we camped just off an alpine access track where it was nice and flat ... and a bit exposed. No weather apps on phones back then, we were just getting radio weather updates and really only listening out for snow lol. I don't know if we missed it but we were totally unaware a huge thunderstorm was coming over night. We got woken up by the sides of the tent being blown flat and the porch area blowing around at about 4/5am. Both had to hop out, drag the tent a few meters back towar the access road to shelter it from the worst of the wind and fortunately rotated it so the porch was facing the torrent of water coming down the mountain. That was some quick thinking that really saved us - inside we were able to get a couple of guy ropes and tie the tarp floor of the porch up to the roof, around one of our rucksacks so it acted like a plow pushing the water around the tent (and disconcertingly under it). I'm pretty sure if we were the other way round, the water would have rushed up the side of the tent and past the tarp line. Fortunately our storm only lasted a few hours, and we were able to tie some lines to a couple of trees, but it was pretty wet the rest of the day. The storm was exciting, the aftermath was boring and muddy - so much mud! Glad you got to see the sunny side of the storm!
Thx for the feedback! Your event sounds similar to many of my motocamping events... unpredictable weather... you're out there with nowhere to go, so you just hunker down and make the best of it! If you didn't see the follow-up video to this one, you might be interested in seeing the winds that we were dealing with ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html ); toward the end of the video you can see the tent just flattened out due to the 40+ mph steady winds. It was a rough day, but the following day's weather was perfect for the races! Cheers! 👍 --QM
I'm really enjoying your channel and the information on the Super Cub. You're the 2nd person I've known from Katy, Tx. A close friend of mine lived there and passed away several years ago. He repaired tack at horse shows. I see a Super Cub in my future, please keep posting.
Howdy, Rusty, and thanks for the feedback! I have a bunch of Super Cub videos sitting in my editing queue, so I'll try to get those posted soon. My recent 7-day, 2000-mile ride to Arkansas and Missouri on the Cub was a blast! I hope to get that series edited and posted before my next trip at the end of October. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! I posted another 360 video of a zipline ride at that same race track a few months later. You can check that one out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8rtsuzaqIE.html . Cheers! 👍 --QM
The sun finally came out later Saturday afternoon and it was clear and hot on Sunday... perfect for solar charging and motorcycle racing! The races were really good... I should have some of that footage edited and posted soon... in 4K! --QM
Thx for the feedback! This is the GoPro Fusion 360 camera, and I set it to record on the highest setting. I used Adobe Premiere Pro CC (2019) to edit and render the final footage. I don't remember the exact Adobe render settings or the camera's firmware, but I can dig up the project files to get the details if you're interested in the nitty-gritty. I was surprised at how good the final footage came out, because I had done a few test videos that were chunky and had lots of video artifacts (pixellation). The built-in audio on the Fusion 360 isn't that great, so I have since purchased a Zoom H3-VR 360-degree audio recorder to pair with the Fusion. I have played around with it a bit, but I haven't published any videos with that setup yet because I'm still learning the editing process and related tools. I will be taking that kit with me for the 2019 Texas Hammock Hangers gathering in mid-November. I hope to get some good 360 audio & video of that event for everyone to watch. Cheers! 👍 --QM
I love to camp. Much older then you. Now own Camper. But many of trips in a tent. Loved it. Today for me, my camping is not much different than being at home. Thumbs up 👍
Thx for the feedback! I've only posted a couple of 360 videos because I wasn't sure if viewers would understand how to use or view them. I had mixed responses to the first video, but this one has been received very well. I'll try to edit and post more 360 ride and camping videos in the near future... stay tuned! Cheers! 👍 --QM
I will be taking several road trips for moto camping this fall. I have 4-5 trips planned before the end of the year, so hopefully we'll have a variety of weather (and rain) for those events. Cheers! 👍 --QM
With this 360 view, its like im sitting in the tent with you. Thats some heavy wind and rain! Glad that your tent held up. Thanks for going through the trouble to get that view up, as leo lion said. Veery cool though! (2 years late to see this 😂)
Thx for the feedback! Did you watch the follow-up video of the track activities later that day and the wind damage ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html ) ? Great video, loved the 360 and are you using a air mattress in this video? Looks super nice set up you have. Appreciate your videos so much, great fun.
Howdy, Shelia, and thanks for the feedback! Yes, I'm using the Klymit Hammock V Insulated pad in this video: amzn.to/3c1z65N . The pad is designed for hammocks, but it works equally well in a 2-person tent. The "wings" on the sides of the pad can be folded under to give thicker side support, and I've found that works really well on the ground. The REI Half Dome 2+ suffered some damage on this trip, but it's still in service. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Nice video!!. One question, Where abouts were you camping? I normally go camping in South Wales UK and camping has to be the best thing to do and with the rain it's comfortable. sometimes it is Intense too if it's bad weather. As well we had a tent few months ago that went down due to heavy winds sadly.
That event was the 2019 MotoGP races at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, TX. The weather has been crazy the last several times that I've moto-camped there... particularly the wind conditions. That day was rough, but the following day for the races was perfect! Cheers! 👍 --QM

Thx for the feedback! I have a few fresh 360 videos that I'll be uploading in the next week or so. I had the chance to use my 360 cameras at Formula 1 in Austin, TX this past weekend... we'll see how those turn out! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! I posted another 360 video of a zipline ride at that same race track a few months later. You can check that one out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8rtsuzaqIE.html . Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thanks for the feedback! This was an impromptu video... I didn't really plan it, but it turned out quite well. RU-vid continues to recommend it to new viewers, and it has been my most successful video so far! Cheers! 👍 --QM
The inside of the tent stays mostly dry, but the rainfly (tarp) does get condensation on it overnight or when it rains. The tent floor can also gather condensation sometimes if the ground temperatures are cold. The tent fly has peak vents and lower tie-outs to help with airflow. The best way to reduce condensation is to provide ample airflow to move the moist air out of the tent. 👍 --QM
I wondering what could have been done once you found yourself in that severe thunderstorm. The tie outs can be replaced with a rock and some paracord but you would get soaked doing it. How could you have avoided the poles from inverting the dome, that's the big question I wonder. Could the poles have been tied out without losing their flexibility? Bungee cords for tie outs? 3 times in 2018 this happened to me while camping and none of the storms were forecast.
I don't think that I could have done very much in that situation. My tent doesn't have ties/anchors through the outer rain fly to the support poles; that would allow me to anchor the mid-span of the poles to prevent them from inverting. The tie-out loops on the rain fly are made of nylon webbing, and they ripped through during the high winds that day. Bungie tie-outs could work for absorbing some of the shock load, but the steady-state winds that we had probably would have resulted in the same damage. My tent fared much better than most others that day, so I can't complain. You can watch the follow-up video here that shows more of the wind damage and carnage from that storm: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxbelQEBNiM.html . You can see my tent inverted and flattened-out near the end of that video... the wind was really crazy that afternoon. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thanks for the feedback! This is the second 360 video that I've posted, and it turned out really well. The editing is a bit tricky, but the camera does a really good job. I recorded this with the GoPro Fusion 360 that I bought about a year ago (the camera model is about 2-3 years old now). GoPro just released their new MAX 360 camera, but it's a bit spendy at $500. I will try more 360 videos with my Fusion and then I might see if I want to make the leap to the new version or not. Cheers! 👍 --QM
The outer cover (rainfly) is the orange and white portion of the tent that you see in this video. The tent mesh is a light gray, so it's mostly transparent on camera. The rainfly did a decent job of keeping the water out, but the peak vents did allow some water to enter because the rain was coming down sideways into the vent openings. The floor of the tent is a "bathtub" construction, so it can actually sit in water several inches deep without soaking through. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Hi quasimotard we just subscribed. I camped for 2weeks when my 3girls were 10yrs an up. We were in a 6berth canvas frame tent... it rained 10days out the 14.... it was awesome tho my girls loved every bit of the rain.... we still love being snugged down in our bags listening to the rain. I put 4 extra guy ropes right over the tent and it held strong thru the wind and rain.....happy memories... regards from us here in Nottingham uk
Greetings from the USA! I love to camp in the rain, but the wind on this trip was a bit much. I still use this tent even though a couple of the tie-outs on the rain fly were torn through. I will be taking several more road trips and motocamping adventures this year, so stay tuned! I plan to video the entire journey that my son and I will take in July for the 2020 Scooter Cannonball Run. That will be a 3-week, 8000-mile trip around the USA on Honda Super Cubs, and we'll be motocamping about 80% of that time. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Wow! 360 is awesome! Big winds! You know where to attach more guy lines now if you have anchor points. Can make your own. Or buy a better tent. Ha. Could hear you fine. Wind noise minimal and rain could tell was pelting but, that camera of yours is amazing! Great video and great audio filtering. Perfect sound. Pretty cool tent also.
Hi i never been camping before.usually when its raining the ground'll get wet as the water flow on it,so the ground below the tent gonna get wet or the water would not reach to it
These tents have "bathtub" floors that are mostly waterproof. They will gather some condensation if the ground is wet or cold for long periods of time, but it's usually not too bad. I prefer to camp in hammocks whenever possible, but this location doesn't have any trees to support a hammock. We all took a beating on this trip... lots of failed tents, fallen motorcycles, and mud everywhere! Cheers! 👍 --QM
From the comments you shared I think this tent was pretty good. Thanks for the 360 video really cool loved it very much . Sort of makes you feel nice when the weather outside sucks and you're all nice and comfy inside.
Thx for the feedback! I've had very good luck with the REI Half-Dome 2+ over the past few years. This storm was a bit severe, and it tore through the tie-down loops on the rain fly in two places. The tent is still in good shape, so I might try to repair those loops and continue using it for a few more years. Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thanks for the feedback! If you're interested in watching, I posted another 360 video recently of a zipline ride here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8rtsuzaqIE.html . Cheers! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! The weather turned nice for race day on Sunday, so everything turned out well. I hope to post more 360 videos soon, so stay tuned! 👍 --QM
Thx for the feedback! I've had really good luck with that tent until that trip... two of the tie-outs on the rain fly finally ripped through later that day. The weather there at COTA can get pretty blustery at times. Cheers! 👍 --QM
This video was recorded with a GoPro Fusion 360 camera. The video files from that went into Adobe Premiere Pro for the editing and stitching together of the multiple clips and minor audio tweaks to bring up the voice level and reduce the background noise a little bit. --QM
Absolutely! I enjoy a good storm in a hammock even more... as long as my tarp and drip lines are doing their jobs properly. 😉 It's great to look out at the rain from an elevated position and still be dry... above the muddy ground and runoff... great times! Cheers! 👍 --QM
When I was little I would take all the umbrellas we had, get in shorts or swimming trunks and open the umbrellas to make a tiny tent around me. I wish I could do that again but our umbrellas are too small.
