One of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, this tree called SHIDARE ZAKURA at Asuwa Shrine in central Fukui city is spectacular! It's over 370 years old and 12m high, 26m wide. The shrine itself has history going back 1500 years. Just for a few days a year, this tree looks like this and at night, it will take your breath away. This is Japan's Sakura season at its best.

The most common & popular Sakura variety in Japan, also the one in D.C., is Somei-Yoshino, which is hybrid and have a short lifespan of 6--70 years. However, some native spices can live for a quite long time. The oldest one known in Japan is near 2000 years old. The tree in this video is the Shidare (weeping) version of Higan-zakura, one of the native spices.

acatinny it makes you wonder how they've kept such a short lived tree alive for so long? You are correct and know your sakura I wish they would sale this specie in the states I found a similar tree in crooked oak Virginia with a ton of babies growing so I stole one lol and I hope this is the specie!!!!!

This tree just brought to me such a profound sense of bliss, of serenity and wonder, tinged with a little sadness. I live across the Pacific, in Vancouver BC. We have cherry trees, but I don't think ANY of them have seen even a tenth of the life of this. But it is the bitter notes of sadness that enhance the sweetness of all else. What do you think?

I subbed to this channel over a year ago as it was mind blowingly great but recently it has gone really bad and stagnant and feels like lacking in what made this channel the one I loved so much to one im about to leave. This channel always had me waiting with great anticipation for you'r next video which always showed wonderful places and things as well as the local lore and the people and the history and what made it special for me was you made it stand OUT above all else in RU-vid and now you'r sinking into the repetitive cycle of all other channels while some manage to keep what made them stand out and not fade away. I know there will be trolls here and I also know some of you will just be plain nasty and hate on what im saying but im saying what im thinking and how im feeling as I feel that if I dont then the one channel I love so much is going to die to me and be lost. Sure everything and everyone changes but they also have to find a way to keep that spark that made them stand out and be noticed in this world as there are so many trying to all do the same and I get that you need to try new things and for a while I stayed here and stayed silent for far too long as I feel like this part of Heaven is slowly fading out like that of a candle burning low the light is bright but soon to fade and whats going to be left when the light is gone.........darkness to which is the same thing all around and the spark of what made it stand out is now gone and unable to be seen to stand out. please Only in Japan go back to what made you YOU.

All that light can't be good for the tree. No doubt, it is gorgeous, however, plants need so much light and darkness for proper growth. They might even get confused for all I know. Maybe that's why it needs to be supported. Still, love Japan.

Nonya Businesss The tree is still here because it's been well taken care of (limbs on stilts) so the least it can do is light up for a week out of the year :) 51 weeks out of 52 it's got all the freedom it wants.

That is actually a relief. I kinda thought that upon reflection considering how often the cherry blossom thing goes on. Still, good to know. I happily stand corrected.
