its kinda hard for some 1 like me to explain,Ive only ever worked on cars for a garage in my local town. right next to the train station. Where they never have anything like these. or locomotives. my fav's. :) Knowing what went into the making of these vehicles and the immense size of the engine. compared to what i work with is a marvel in itself. yeah engines are dirty and smelly and poluting, but there man made. This for me, IS GOOSEBUMP TIME HEHEHE People who love this will understand.
You hear the engine start turning over (i.e. cylinders firing). The white smoke is overfuelling, the diesel in the cylinders isnt being completely ignited
1. class 40 and 50 used the EEV16 2. never race a cold engine like that 3 u start it by either the genorator, or startermotors 4 the hunting idle is caused by cold engine oil (because it not thin enough when cold) not being able to supply the engine governor like on a steam road roler properly 5. my dad used to drive bristol VR's an mw's with gardner engines and i used to help with maintainance on them as a very young lad and can remeber the cold start clag. 6 i love clag.
