Congratulations on your purchase. I come from the former state of Yugoslavia ... from Croatia. It was the car of my youth..my father drove a Zastava 101, called "Stojadin" ..a car that went the first kilometers to Germany, Italy, Austria and without any problems. Today I miss such cars without electronics and without complicated technology ... repair in the neighbor's garage. Happy ride !!!
Back in the days one friend of mine replaced the engine with the Lancia 1.6 105 hp. The thing was a rocket. The new engine fits perfectly on the mounts. The only thing needed was a lot of welding to reenforce the engine bay. He also changed the suspensions, brakes ( Fiat Ritmo 2.0) and wheels.
Yugo is actually a good looking car, the problem is its troubled history so the first thing people think of when someone mentions Yugo is a joke of some kind, be it in the US or here in the Balkans where this cars very popular. It is not as near as bad as people keep talking these days, especially those examples made until 1991. as the war destroyed everything in Yugoslavia back then the Zastava lost its suppliers from other republics, the quality went down dramatically. I remember having many almost trouble free thousands of kilometres in my father's dark red 1989. Yugo . It was relatively reliable for a cheap car like this, any problem it had was solved easily with a few simple tools. I drove that car for 150 000 kilometres before the engine was rebuilt, which was extremely good for that time and that car. Now I believe the Yugo Cabrio is really cool, especially with some more modern wheels and few additional accessories.
I would like to know the VIN # if is that show car from the NY car show the was on a turn table at the show it has no bracing in the under frame and may have a tendency to bend down in the middle ad make the doors over time hard to shut
