You need to get one of your sponsors to provide you with a 3pt hitch log skidding arch. I built one for my Kubota B2150. The winch allows me to snatch out logs to where I can hook short to them and raise the butts for skidding. The blade on it works as an anchor when winching hard, and prevents the front of tractor from lifting too far when skidding.

Ever cut a 1/4 or 1/3 out the sides but leave the bottom of a blue poly barrel... you can cover your nose and not fill it up with the dirt... those poly drums make great skid pads... couple double headed nails or a strap on a couple three 4” deck screws or something like that to hold it in place as it’s dragging along helps... she’s heading to your mill so it’s just a little way to keep some mud off your nose there... it’s very hilly and that’s no joke...one little mistake or misjudged area and your getting pulled over...I love that you are smart enough to stay safe you always have tomorrow or whatever...when we hurry we hurt ourselves! 👍😁. That Attachment Works Pretty Well To Skid The Logs Out of Woods maybe one with hooks or a D ring to hook chain thru!!👍👊

Larry Copenhaver well I have been in the woods for 30 years by myself, before that with my father. 10 cords a year, plus logs years ago. But it was always one chain years ago. Now a winch and choker chain. This is new to me. 🙂

At the 11:00 mark we get to appreciate how steep the drive back really is and on a turn to boot. The ridges on the bark of that big red oak are so large and deep it reminds me of poplar.

you have some pretty logs now you need that new saw mill to make some pretty lumber , i'm sure red oak will beautiful , nice job getting them logs up that hill , would it be easier to use cable chokers to rig those logs with ? i guess the chain is working fine

Mike might I suggest using a couple snach blocks to get the last one up the hill to a safe spot to use the RK55 to move back to house.

Grab 2 chain hooks and hook them together to take up the slack in the chain, then you won't have to keep wrapping and unwrapping the chain. Great video.

Thanks so much for this video, tried to skid a large log yesterday and no deal. Used your technique and was able to get logs with 30 inch diameter out of the woods despite heavy mud.

Thanks for this. I'm milling timbers for a timber frame - 26 foot, 30 inch logs - I need to basically get them moved to level ground where I can set up the Lucas mill over them. Some I'll have to skid a ways, on some steep ground in Oregon. I'm shopping for tractors too, and this video helps. I'm wondering what kind of HP I need - not sure I can afford 55, and wondering if 35 will have enough grunt!

I enjoy your videos, Mike. One suggestion. At the end of the when you were pushing the log off of your chain, avoid pushing diagonally with your loader. It puts stress on the loader at weird angles, particularly with such a heavy load. It can cause the brackets of your loader that attach to the tractor to break. I only know this because I have done it. Instead, consider pushing it from a straight on position. Keep up the interesting content and greetings from Central Kentucky.

Thats not just stress cracks, the logs are starting to check, when the logs dry from inside to fast, need to seal end grain to prevent or aleast slow down. Check out Matt Cremona videos on sawmilling and drying timber.

Great job moving that log and the chains setup! My butt still puckered watching you get near the bottom of the hill. I will definitely keep a chain setup like that in mind if I need to try something similar.

Nice oak log there Mike. I do all my skidding with a farmi winch on my Kioti DK35SE. Did it for 30 plus years on the winch and various tractors I’ve owned. Don’t mean to be a critic but . . . When hooking your chains it is advisable to have the point of the grab hook or circle hook, what ever the case to be pointing up. If and when the chain breaks the chain goes to the ground instead of airborne. Even in my tractor with a skidder cage around me I still do it that way. Stay safe.

Win...Finish? Choose finish here. I used be full power, max speed, but somewhere along the way I slowed a little . Now....in my 78 year I introduce myself as a successful woodworker, and they’re easy to pick out of the crowd...do they have all 10...FINGERS. ALWAYS!!! The log arch is a great way to handle that log IF it would fit! That's a pretty big diameter, but it would provide the lift at the front you're looking for. The only issue I see with that scenario is getting down to the log to hook it up, then back up the hill to remove it since the arch trailer would be hooked up directly behind the tractor. Nice job of getting 'er done!

Nice job Mike... I like the chain sling to prevent rolling, great idea. As the tractor exited the corner at the bottom of the slanted grade, the tail end of the log did indeed slide to the left, but it DID NOT roll, well done sir... Good advice here, go slow, think about what you are doing, all good stuff. Well explained on the importance of working on frozen ground versus wet melting ground... I would like to see what you are doing inside the cab Mike as you slowly worked the log out. Some folks may not be familiar with locking axles & using low to mid range on various maneuvers. Just a thought. All the best, Bill on the Hill... :~)

Mike, those big logs have such a big crack, maybe that is a opportunity to run the saw end to end and finish the split. As halves they would sure be easier to handle. Good luck.

Great job Mike, while watching you adjust your long chain several times I had an idea. Make a 2' cheater chain with hooks. Wrap the 2' chain around your top link and then move your short chain hooks down leaving the long chain to drag.

I noticed the shovel you have I have just like it I got splinters in my hands when not wearing gloves So I wrapped it with Duct tape No more splinters Good job skidding too!

Safety first is always a good idea. Chain up those tires and the tractor will be a lot more stable, even on the side hills. Now let's put the grapple on the Rk 55 and see if you can stack that log. My kubota would. Ha,ha.

Like your videos but I can't help to mention that you should never hook up anything higher than the rear wheel axle height. You could very easily of over turned if you would have gotten better traction. I pull hundreds of logs with a little L48 kubota with a set of tongs hooked to the lower 3 point hitch arms works well. Watch those wheels!

Man I here the hydro complaining. I have a logging winch so I go up on the flat and winch the log to an area where I can skid it or process it right there. You got to make do with what you have thou. As always I enjoy your videos. Keep them rolling.

If only you had a chain saw to cut that little log.... Wonder who might have a saw near you? 🤔 as I said over on stoney ridge farm use an old truck hood flipped upside down. run the chain, rope, or cable whichever you want through the striker loop. then connect one end to the tractor and one end to the log. Then start pulling what happens is the log gets pulled up onto the hood which acts as a sled for the log. allowing it to slide over pretty much anything and also helps to protect the trail from gouging.

The crucial point of success I think was when lifting the log you got more weight on rear wheels and better traction. Especially with gravel in bucket (and no wheel chains). When I'm working in forest wintertime I bring a iron-bar lever to free up frozen logs and to get wire/chain under them.

Mike, it is too bad you don't have any way to re-grade that bad corner so it is not off camber, even if you had to remove a tree or two. If only you had a backhoe or even a blade, lol. It would probably even make a good little video, oh well. Good luck.

For that next log which is further down the hill, I'd like you to try using the loader. Keep the tractor up on the top of the slope, run a chain down to the log and hitch it to the loader bucket. Then lift, pulling the log upward toward the tractor. Let the log down, back up the tractor and repeat. I've used this technique hundreds of times, pulling logs out of the woods toward my tractor road. You saw the power of your rear hydraulics on the 3 point; the front hydraulics are even stronger. Just be sure to square the tractor to the log so when you lift the load is equally on both tires. Good luck!

Great job mike! I knew that old tree never had a chance! I have found Rural King store to be best store like you say. I recent went to the one outside Pittsburgh. I am just glad they are not too close to where I live. I would be there all the time! They do have some great products. I was looking for a rear three point blade like you are using. They didn't have one in stock. I did find one that was very well built for my tractor. Just does not tilt and offsets differently. The prices seem to be cheaper than where i live. Keep up the great work.

The chain hooked to the log should give people some perspective on the size. It made the chain look small. The thing that really blew me away (you may watch the video to see it) when you pried that little log with the shovel there was enough leverage that it moved the log! Despite the big tractor slipping! A 4' shovel and your body weight and strength moved it! Never forget the pyramids! I've been thinking about your situation with RK and when the 2 years expires. I don't know if there is something else in the works, but if the want to keep lending you stuff by all means use it. If they make you a deal to purchase and you don't have a money tree hidden somewhere we haven't seen yet, I think that RK 37 is the most versatile tractor of the three. Not too big, but big enough and not too small and I'm sure you can get a cab that you would become proficient at taking on and off. Keep up the good work and great videos!

Just a quick note about weight and weight distribution - Loading the bucket actually removes weight from the rear wheels which adversely affects your traction and more importantly your braking. Just think of the loader as a giant lever and you will get the idea. Though the loader itself adds weight to the rear you would get the best traction and braking by removing the bucket. I'll let someone else yell at you for not using the draw bar (though I'm tempted I don't see it as being a major problem with a hydrostatic transmission since you are just a foot lift from dropping the front end back down. Not like popping the clutch with high rpm for an almost instantaneous up and over)

Anchor seal helps to prevent the end grain cracking and uneven drying which causes warping and stress in the boards.

I still figure it would be a good idea to pack a 2 way radio in case something happens. They are cheap. We use them all the time on job sites. Site safety, me plus foremen or charge hands plus site boss.All Wildland Firefighters have radios, no-one can be out of range or touch with someone.Frankly, I don't care if I'm referred to as a 'Safety Sally" or not, I've seen and dealt with a lot of things that you don't want to have happen to you.
