-38° COLDEST NIGHT in a FROZEN HOT TENT. ICY and ALONE.

It gets down to -38 on this trip to the frozen remote off-grid camp. That is as cold as it has ever been for me while camping. While some people out there have experienced much colder winter conditions - including me - what makes this experience unique is that I'm doing this with nothing more than a canvas tent and a stove.
Canvas tents are great in the cold and I love mine, but there is no insulation. So when that stove goes out, the temps plummet right away. In fact, it's colder inside my tent than outside when I arrive.
I have a few things I need to do around camp. I'm cracking out a handmade wood splitter; it's awesome.
I am also modifying my bogan and cooking lamb on the flaming stove in the tent.
And ... I'm hoping my Jackery can heat up my snowmobile in these freezing conditions.
Jackery stuff: www.jackery.com
Here are all of my tiny cabin hot tent videos: www.youtube.co....
Follow me on Instagram: / ajayinthewoods
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the RU-vid training (watching) over the years.

Easy way to quiet the splitter up is to take something like a pillow or even a blanket of some sort to dampen the ringing. It's like the difference between tapping a bell with a stick and holding onto the rim while tapping it. Also insulation works both ways, that is why your tend was colder inside than out! Also have you ever thought of adding a firebox gasket to the top part of your stove so it makes a better seal?

Jay, once again you put out a great video. The squeaky snow sounds and that bone chilling cold hanging in the air brings back great winter memories for me. Even though I don't live far from my childhood home, the winters have warmed up dramatically (we only have a skiff of snow on the ground), so thanks for your making your videos! Great splitter but I think it might be prudent to put a hard cover on the upright splitter blade, to protect you if you slipped or tripped onto it. It would likely leave a nasty gash! Take care and enjoy your special spot.

@navn_ukjent

@@jaylegere You could get some sheets of rockwool and use some netting to keep it against the walls and roof of the tent. That would not be permanent, but the insulating effect would be huge. Rockwool is also non-flammable and it doesn't loose much insulating quality even if it gets wet.

Even a wood one . But that old canvas tent from the other camp . Might work as the garage and 2 help keep it out of the weather . 2 help with the start in the cold . Take care and best wishes in the new year .

Propane does not "gel up". It simply won't boil into a gas fast enough and stays as a liquid. Butane has an even higher boiling point and won't work in winter at all.

Hi Jay, good to see you back at the good tent, lol. All your food looks great. One of my favorites is Spam sandwiches fried or plain with mustard. Chocolate chips in pancakes? Yuck, like mine plain. Concerning your splitting block, cut a round about 6" thick and overlap it about an inch on your splitting block and nail it to your chopping blockusing 4-6 grabber nails. This will keep your chopping block in tact. It's -25F here in Willow, Alaska. Thanks for sharing.

When you are splitting wood outside it sounds like you say Fiskars Then I listened again and I heard it clearly; "This Husqvarna Axe is the best axe I've ever owned" so it's a Husqvarna and I'm thinking I can't quite tell from the length I would assume it's the bigger one the 6 lb but it could be the 3 lb but the coloring and everything is Husqvarna fire sure, with the steel over strike edge there the steel plate. 1600 gr three pound, 24" and the 2800 gr 6 pound 27 " DEFINITELY Husky so maybe you might maybe comment further for everybody or give a link for it if you can find one? I watched lots of Braeden Rockcliffe videos and he uses twin mauls and Husky Axes. Amazing kid!!!

Can you build your tent around your snow mobile and an existing exit. So you can keep it warm. Do you have the room. ? Or even a tent just for your snowmobile at least to keep ice off and much better chance at it starting. Maybe with some flex duck running from your main tent to your tent coving your snow mobile. It doesn’t require much heat but would be worth it. To know it will start every time

Propane... Not me... I'm a butane person. Actually the propane puts fumes or something in the air I can't breathe in and don't smell good either. The butane isn't a problem for me. So I only go butane these days. I have a butane camp stove (horizontal, rectangular and butane can goes in side compartment). I also have one of them mini burners you screw on the top of threaded butane can. I use my camp stove even in home instead of the electric stove/oven. Except rare occasion I reheat something in a microwave or bake something in oven, but that's really rare for me to do that.
