“Hold On Loosely” and “Caught Up in You” were both bangers. These dudes knew how to rock the charts and the arenas! They had great sound and songs. Enjoyed your commentary.
38 special Donnie van Zant brother was Ronnie van Zant who was lead singer in lynyrd skynyrd and Ronnie's daughter was married to one time guitarist in shinedown. Hold on loosely is one of their biggest hits and my favorite. Also luv chain lightning by them. Any song by them with Don Barnes singing is great
looking back at the 60's and 70's when i grew up it still blows me away for the quality and sheer endlessness of new bands and sounds that came out what seemed like every week. this song was from '82 but fell in with the 70's southern rock sound. the cover picture from their album 'wild eyed southern boys' is one of the best ever. the 80's were really great too but those other 2 decades will never be reproduced. they are history and i am soooo glad that i was a part of it.
Great reaction….. .38 Special have many hits , 1) Rocking Into The Night 2) Hold On Loosely 3) Fantasy Girl 4) Back Where You Belong 5) If I’d Been The One
You won't believe how they decided to name their band! "“There was an old truck called big blue that kept falling apart. It kept eating up all of our profits. I remember coming home with $30 after fixing this truck. Donnie and I would ride around and try to find an obscure place to rehearse. We would find these places for fifty bucks a month to rehearse, of course we had day jobs then. The guy could not figure out why we wanted to rent this place. There was manure, and we had to shovel it out of there and then get some pallets to stand on for a floor. We had the place fortified and had it vaulted up with 2 x 4’s and a big motorcycle chain that went through the hole in the door to lock it with this old rusty lock. Then we had to climb in a window to get in and out. One night we were rehearsing and heard someone banging on the door and when we looked, there were 12 constables banging on the door to get in. We were yelling and telling them we couldn’t open the door and one of them yelled that he had a .38 special to use on the door if we wouldn’t let him in. So when we had our first show, we had not thought of a name so we decided to use that name.”"
38 Special is a great southern rock band that was formed in 1974. They had a lot of hits in the early 80's-90's such as "Hold On Loosely", "You Keep Runnin' Away", "If I'd Been The One", "Back Where You Belong", "Teacher, Teacher", "Like No Other Night", "Second Chance", "The Sound Of Your Voice" etc.
Very helpful comment! As a kid I was more into the Police, Clash and Talking Heads. But I stumbled upon an interview with guitarist Carlisi and I was doing housework and it was fascinating. 🤘🎸
About the writers of this song: Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan are not in .38 Special. They were members of the band Survivor. Peterik played keyboards and Sullivan played guitar for Survivor. Don Barnes is the main lead singer of .38 Special and Jeff Carlisi is one of the band's guitarists.
Jim Peterik was also a member of The Ides of March and wrote their very memorable and smash hit, Vehicle. He also co-wrote the following .38 Special songs ... This one, of course, Rockin' Into The Night and Hold On Loosely, but also hits for a slew of other artists, too many to mention here.
Nice one Shawn! Everyone hits on the same old, same old by them but "Fantasy Girl" is by far their best and I think you'd enjoy it immensely. I hope you can squeeze it in soon THANKS!
You might also like to hear the band/Duo Van Zant, which consisted of brothers Donnie and Johnny. A real good song from them is "Nobody Gonna Tell Me What to Do."
For some reason, this always reminds me of a tape I had of songs from the radio with my 11-12 year old handwriting on it. 😂 This song, Big Shot (Billy Joel), Ride Like The Wind (Christopher Cross) and more classics. ❤
Hello Shawn, I thought I'd suggest another song by an artist that I believe you've reacted to before and seemed to enjoy his work. So, I thought I'd suggest another one of his tunes, if interested. "Harry Chapin - Mail Order Annie (Soundstage)" (by the channel: bagnon) --This song is from his album called "Verities & Balderdash" released in 1974. The song explores the themes such as love and loneliness as well as the human pursuit to happiness even under unconventional ways. A beautifully well written song that's thought provoking and open to interpretation...ahhh just the kind of song we all enjoy. (IMhO)
