Great video. Just putting this out there. I've had 4 different lcps and have put hundreds of hornady cd through different ones and never had a problem with it. Used it in other guns but one thing important with this gun is it feeds good. Different kinds of mags. 6 round ruger,7 round ruger, 6 round promag, 10 round promag. ss slide. Blue slide. Galloway sweet pea trigger. In my experience it just works.
Good illustration and interesting concept with the plastic. I use Hornady, but not with the plastic in my .380. Most folks are hyped about stopping power and the truth is that regardless of the caliber, if a bullet hits only soft tissue, the stopping power is negated....even with a .45. Years ago, I was taught that a pelvic region shot, will do a lot of bone damage and is quite effective in stopping someone. So, I would suggest that one practice enough to ensure that you place your bullet accurately.
You can clear those ripples with a heat gun and a metal spatula. Critical Defense is my choice for my .380s, but other than a backup I rarely carry one. Thanks for your video, it was informative and entertaining.
I think the third one would have expanded in a fresh block as well. It's my opinion, that once you fire around through the gel block, unless you were a good three or four inches away from the previous shot, the density is compromised. That third bullet may have passed through in already cut wound Channel, and that may have been why it did not expand
this is my favorite carry ammo in 380 and 9mm. it isn't the best at expansion or penetration but it's the most constant ammo I've seen. it always goes bang, always expands, it just always works time after time. My Bodyguard is loaded with it, so is my 111 g2.
It will probably be a lot more effective in your G2. But in general, this round even in 380 isn't too bad. I have seen previous tests done in bare gelatin where the penetration was abysmal so my theory is that clothing retarded deformation of the bullet so it was able to go further on. It seems my general recommendation of using hard ball in 380 has some caveats. I am filming my next one today.
Interesting. Completely different result than what shooting the bull got. This is more what I would expect. I'll keep using this as my carry ammo. Just picked up some Inceptor ARX to try out too
I think Hornady may have changed something with the loading as Lucky Gunner got an average penetration of over 13” and ive seen other gel test showing similar results.
@@ryanpeck3377 I think Shooting the Bull might have just gotten a bad box of ammo, because I haven't seen anyone able to replicate results as bad as his.
I use this ammo in my wife’s .380 carry gun. I use it in my 9mm and my .357 magnum. The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me …is what is the difference in the hollow point getting denim in it, and the red piece that comes in it? If it’s already clogged or clogged after going into clothing isn’t that the same?
From all the videos I’ve been watching what I now understand is that this is a fantastic round however in shorter barrels it doesn’t have as much opportunity to expand as much as it does in the larger barrels such as 3 1/2 inch or more
A 2 out of 3 success rate is 66.6%. If I recall my public school grading, that's an F. Also that's why I've just migrated my Remington RM380 from these Hornadys to the Underwood Extreme Penetrator 90 gr. (1,100 FPS; 242 FPE). I use the Xtreme Defenders in my 9mms.. The Underwood Xtremes don't need to expand, since their fluted shape combined with their very fast spinning (around 50,000 RPM at the barrel out of my RM380) creates a wound track that beats even the best JHP's, are VERY consistent, and neither over nor under penetrate per the FBI's gel tests. Being barrier blind is nice too. Their only drawback: they're damn expensive--but my life and the lives of my family are worth it.
In a 2004 Guns & Ammo review, Wiley Clapp said, "Ingenuity is often nothing more than a combination of existing principles applied in unique ways. Kel-Tec's new P-3AT has no single feature that is not established in modern pistol design, yet it has no competition in its niche."[2] However, competitors soon introduced models with very similar features, including: the Ruger LCP,[3][4] Kahr P380, S&W .380 Bodyguard[5] and Taurus 738 TCP;[6] and the metal-framed SIG Sauer P238.
So far, I have only tested these two hollow points along with ball ammo. They all feed, ignite, and eject perfectly. However, the few times I rode the slide home when chambering a round, I had the round hang up and not fully seat. Pulling that slide back and letting it go, like one would normally do, produces no issues. Then again, riding the slide home will make just about any gun choke.
You are right, Gun Sam _Revolver Aficionado is doing extensive testing of his Ruger LCP like yours, and that is the case with his. The round you tested in this video and the Winchester Silvertips chamber and funtion the most reliably in his LCP.
Hi, I have the same gun, and I bought the same anmo without success. My gun fire the chamber round but not the rest. Now I use the first round Hornady Critical Defense and the others FMJ. Cheers.
I have the newer LCP 2. I've used this round, Winchester white box, and Remington FMJ and never experienced a single malfunction. I think the days of expecting decent guns to malfunction with certain ammo is over.
they Say 380s suckass this goes threw 3 gel blocks... well I know i wouldn't want to get hit with this round with headshot, neckshot, chestshot nor bodyshot but can't speak for anyone else
Derek Long plus 4 layers of denim and being a goddamn hollow point it's definitely got some 'Merica in it 🤣🤣🤣 I feel quite confident in the power .380 acp has to protect me and I definitely wouldn't wanna be one of those gel blocks not even for a .22 short
If u have 95 grain bulltes like i had and ya 4 inch flame muzzel flash and with 90 grain or any thing else it was like thay would kick but u got think a 40 10mm 45 50 9mm wpupf stop on one
I tested regular FMJ an this Hornadys on the lcp2 gun. Im surprised that you didnt mention the loss of accuracy. The hornady kick so much heavier it throws accuracy down , For me it was huge. Appreciate your thoughts on this aspect.
2 out of 3 is terrible, and I have yet to see a single vid where that or any other .380 JHP expands reliably why making minimum FBI protocol depths, where as any quality 9mm JHP is consistent. As there's many quality compact 9mm pistols just slightly larger than .380 offerings, the .380 makes even less sense.
For a small carry not bad. I have noticed at times bigger guns stink. Enough power and number. And against multiple bad apples at least it will stick to the 1attacker you where aiming at.
These expanded and penetrated perfectly, in my opinion. Other ones did not. Bone definitely would change the game with most tests. I have some stuff relating to that coming later this year.
Truth I've heard nothing but positives about Hornady critical defense and obviously as a hollow point that's gonna mean it does its job and expands so that's what I carry in my lil lcp it's an awesome gun I want the ammo shortage to hurry up and end so I can actually shoot my gun and enjoy all of its glory instead of barely being able to shoot a lil over half the box and having to keep seven to ensure my carry gun is ready for carry
@@michaelhoffman9573 You could look on Gunbroker for ammo but get ready to pay. You just have to keep looking at you LGS. If your friends with the owner they maybe able to put a box aside for you or let you know when it arrives.
@@lemmdus2119 well I've looked online and seen as low as 25 cents a round for 1000 so if that's not sold out (probably is with my luck 🤣) then I may just get some ball ammo pretty cheap in bulk
I still carry 380s with ball ammo. But I am very pleased with this ammunition as well. Your EZ has a longer barrel so it will probably have even better performance. Cheers.
I switch from hornady critical defense 115g to hst 124g..standard pressure..my question to you is which one would you recommend I keep in my nightstand Glock 26 and why?
@@istartedajoke1704 They are both a good choice in 9mm. If you are interested ShootingTheBull410 has a great series of gell test on here. You will find that .380 bullets with good expansion usually won’t meet the FBI penetration target, .380 just doesn’t have enough power. In 9mm this isn’t a problem. HST and Gold Dots are some of the best 9mm bullets, but Critical Defense also gives a good showing and tends to be more reasonably priced. Plain Winchester White Box 115 grain HP is also a good bargain bullet if you can find it.
@@istartedajoke1704 I use the 124gr+P HSTs and Underwood Xtreme Defender 90gr+P also the Speer Gold Dots are great rounds, 124gr+P 🇺🇲 The extra velocity helps expansion in Pistols with shorter barrels, less than 4"
It means that the bullet exited the assailant in the back, leaving a reasonable size whole for them to bleed to death, if it didn’t puncture a kidney or liver, in which case they would have dropped almost immediately.
Interesting bit of information, one morning a friend and I went hunting and downed a young boar hog maybe 120-130 lbs not even. We made our approach and that joker was thrashing and kicking around. I had my .380 in my back pocket and handed it to my buddy to "finish him off," buddy shot pig right in the head and the bullet slammed into the side of the pigs skull and fell to the ground. I believe my gun was loaded with some of these rounds at the time.... What a confidence booster lol.
I am looking for a good round for my Taurus Spectrum. It's my backup gun to my .45. These don't look too bad. I got a box that I need to run thru the gun to see how they feed.
@@samuelmorado70 I ran 20 rounds of DRT thru it and no FTF at all. I carry DRT's in my .45. I also use .380 hollowpoints that Buds gun shop makes and they are good too. Bought those when they were cheap. Got 200 rounds for 80 bucks.
I go with Hornady XTP .380 instead...avg just over 12 in ..full expansion in denim.covered .. ORGANIC BALLISTIC GEL BLOX SAME AS FBI USES.....NOT clear balisic Gel ...Hornady ..FIOCCHI XTP BULLETS FOR ME !
Being honest, I keep my firearm CLEANED & OILED properly, but, I bought some of these rounds thinking they'd work well with my Ruger LCP, yet, as of recently, I've had issues with the loading process, my slide gets stuck a lot more than with the Remington rounds I started out with. I'm going to go to my local range to hurry up & get rid of these & get something I feel more confident in....
Ive noticed it a lil as well but imma give it a few boxes of ammo to see how I feel and if I think there are far better options I may just carry ball ammo being that it's .380 and not like a 10mm or something else that's got some mega punching power 🤣 (not knocking .380 I wouldn't even knock a .22 short since I wouldn't want to be the plinking target for that)
That's right on. I did get a chance to try HCDs in 9mm in gel and they expanded perfectly and hit past the 16 inch mark. But as it stands, these in 380 are the only ones that penetrate enough with some expansion. So far, the rest I have tested on video have either expanded but not penetrated much or they didn't expand and sailed through like FMJ loads.
The problem is the short barrel. Something like Bersa thunder, Glock 42 for reliable expansion. Problem is I carry my LCP2 as light summer dress or ankle backup because it is small. the aforementioned are too big for my intended use.
@@professorpewpuew Have you tested the Leigh High Defense Rounds Loaded by Underwood? They offer a 68gr .380acp solid copper monolithic called the xtreme defender, muzzle velocity is 1,300 fps and 255 ft lbs of energy, they meet Federal guidelines with penetration up to 18"
@@bcarss1970 Exactly, I'd get one of the larger .380's, as they are easier to shoot, more accurate, etc, but, then it wouldn't fit the purpose of a small micro pistol. AT that point might as well use a larger caliber. It's just like I know that a .380 S&W Shield will be nice to shoot, but it's not a pocket pistol, and might as well have a 9mm Shield at that size.
A slab of ribs and your jell behind it with some of denim over the ribs I bet you would love those results going through bone also, just saying, but I like your video video
I was having problems with Hornady hollow point going in the battery. I tried ball ammo and it went into battery with no issues. Should I be worried? On a sidenote, I like using ball ammo.
I did put a few more rounds into other blocks with similar results. I did try the XTP in the form of the American Gunner loading. That load penetrated well, but never came close to expanding. So far, the CD round is the winner in both categories.
@@professorpewpuew i just fired some of these from my lcp2 and was surprised at how accurate and soft shooting this ammo was, especially compared to the fmj i was shooting. Do you know the reasoning behind this? Is the hornady just not as hot as the fmj sellior and bellot i was shooting?
I have these alternating with regular hollow points. I am happy with this test. It doesn't account for hitting bone. The one that didn't expand probable went in to a hole already made by another bullet. Penetration was great. So was expansion. Kind of debunked myth about 380's not being able to penetrate. People fail to realize, it's a low velocity 9mm round. Lower velocity = greater kinetic energy transfer. This is why .40 is better then a .45. 380 Bersa Thunder is my CC choice. I am a skinny dude, and a small slim gun hides best on me. Plus I love that it is a Walther ppk knock off. I feel a bit like James Bond.
Yeah, 380 isn't alot of mass or velocity to get through hard barriers of any substance. I still prefer to carry the LCP loaded with FMJ flatnosed rounds.
Fair review. Just added a box to my last ammo order and was researching the round. More likely I'd have to use it on a rabid raccoon than a bad guy in the places I frequent, but it is good to be informed.
So far, this is probably the best expanding ammunition I tested. I wouldn't hesitate to load it up in my 380s for personal defense. Hopefully I can test the few others I have left when it warms up.
This ammo is terrible and can't be counted on to work properly every time. This stuff jams every second to fourth shot out of every firearm I have in several calibers. I'm just shooting it as practice until all I have is gone. I'll stick with better ammo for carry.
Hornady ammo sucks, there pistol and rifle ammo is junk, if you buy Hornady ammo you would be better to throw your money out the window before you get to the gun store.
