”38s Over The Mountains” presents spectacular footage of 3801 & 3830 climbing the Great Dividing Range via the scenic and steeply graded routes through Katoomba and Roberstson. Join the crews of 3830 to experience the skill and effort required to take on the challenge of working one of these magnificent machines over the mountains.
Witness the awesome performance of 3801, wearing the temporary black livery that was applied after its 1999 overhaul, and 3830 struggling to reach Robertson in atrocious weather and marvel at astonishing views of the 38s slogging up the grade from Unanderra to Dombarton recorded from an inspection vehicle pacing the locos on the adjacent track.
Unforgettable scenes and sounds that all steam enthusiasts will appreciate. To order a copy of this DVD visit the Train Pictures website at:

Great video! 3801's New Haven-inspired streamlining makes this is the closest North Americans will ever get to seeing a NYNH&H I-5 Hudson again in service. Beautiful scenes. Thanks for sharing.

They were called steam engines for a reason. Most of the emissions you see are water as water vapour. Yes, carbons are being emitted via the smoke funnel but this is mosly solid Carbon as soot. Soot falls onto the ground and is returned to ground during rainfall as Carbon which is needed for plant growth. Carbon Dioxide (Doxide if you are a Prime Minister) is produced. Ash material is colllected in firebox and in today's world it could be used in cement making. Spark arresters were often used to help reduce issues with starting bush fires.

Thanks for such a positive comment. Over the last few weeks this video seems to have gone "viral" in America, so I'm really curious as to why it is attracting so much interest there. Could I ask how/why you came to watch it? |If someone had told me back in 2000 when I was recording it that sometime in the future hundreds of thousands of Americans would be watching it I would have thought the person was crazy! Regards, Bevan Wall.

I live in northwest Tennessee and there was a factory close to here that built steam engines for years. They continued to build them till about twenty years ago for special projects. My great uncle was a design engineer and spent his life designing these wonderful engines. There were thousands of steam engines in our country and many are being restored and put back to use--even in parks. Within ten miles, there was a very large turntable and it is now used in a railroad museum here in our state. This museum has restored a number of engines and run them daily. Thanks Bevan for your interest. Best regards.

Watched a couple of episodes of Casey Jones recently, Wally the fireman is incredible, never puts any coal on the fire, looks occasionally at the fire, wipes a valve with a rag, and turns it a turn or two. I remember reading that the Spirit of Progress was a non stop service between Melbourne & Albury, the fireman spent nearly the whole trip shovelling coal . It must have been really hard dirty work especially on a wet cold night. These guys are enjoying this but back when these engines were operating it would have been damn hard work . I don’t think the 38 had a screw coal loader.

Being NSW locos most followers would not be aware of the SOP. That fully streamlined Victorian train was also a design masterpiece along with its' S class locos.Don't tell the Vics but I think theirs was ever so slightly faster but they did not have the terrain the NSW lines had to get out into the bush. I did read somewhere that the early 38's had two firies on certain runs such was the demand for coal.

Tbh when I watch these and then compare them to old original firemen I can’t always help thinking today they are over firing them far too much….. there’s too much coal going into the fire box.

Later to black then green and has had two other slightly different shades of green with the restorations since..The colour of 3830 here is more like the irst green...close to British Racing Green.

@barryphillips7327 7 лет назад
Excellent video! Very enjoyable! A lot of what we see coming out of the loco,s is simply steam ( super heated water ), the black you see from the loco is coal being burned, when a steam is climbing or working hard you see more black from the exhaust to keep up the steam pressure. I have seen many diesels polluting worse than this probably due to lack of proper maintainance.👍👍👍👍
@xr6lad
@xr6lad 2 года назад
The black is a sign of over coaling. My take away from these modern videos compared to real old timers is today they think more is better. On the flat you should be putting no more than 4-6 shovels in then nothing for 2 minutes (rest). Hills maybe 2 extra. Not continuous shovelling. That’s just smothering the fire - not making it burn efficient.
@barryphillips7327
@barryphillips7327 2 года назад
@@xr6lad yes the coal smokes while it gets going, most household fires smoke because the burn rate has been slowed right down, IF coal is allowed to burn quicker there is a LOT LESS smoke and a lot heat ( i speak from experience with my old fire, a pot belly stove, which puts out very little smoke, the newer ones smoke much more!! Coal really is a good heat source, pound for pound i doubt any fuel puts out the volume of heat or for as long, but greenies do not allow its use, in the UK many electric cars powered by coal fired power stations, so EXACTLY how green are they REALLY???? Not half as good as their owners like to think, the pollution is coming from a different source thats all!!

Allan Ritchie they can be operated to reduce pollution. most of the black smoke you see is as a result of overfiring and producing a sudden increase in tar. steam engines also benefit from being unable to produce Co or other poisonus gases produced in combustion engines due to lack of proper oxygenisation.

They were always slipping, Most over rated class of steam locomotive ever built. Many smaller steam locomotives never had the traction issues of the 38 class. But those who seem to adore them have tunnel vision, and refuse to accept there was anything better. And they should be kept off main lines but that;s another argument. The steam "enthusiasts" who could not care one bit about safety will argue they have the "right" to be on any lines. Not according to rail bosses and investigators who had to deal with "accidents" caused by fouling and stalling steam locos.

@robertmwoodley1502
@robertmwoodley1502 7 лет назад
Yes the problem for NSWGR was that every passenger train exit from Sydney, the hub of the state railways, had steep grades and incredible engineering was required even to build the railways' steep grades. 3801 would have run fast with a heavy train with 6 foot three inch driving wheels like Scotsman. Because of the grades she had 5 foot 9 inch driving wheels. Her power was more than Flying Scotsman and 10% less than Victorian Railways S class.
