Whoever designed the apparatus shown is a genius...before, the base of the burial vault had to be placed in the grave after it was opened...dirt and debris would always be a problem, especially when placing the lid on the vault after the casket was interred..from this, the vault and casket become a unit to be buried in the plot...WELL DONE....
People don’t realize the work it takes behind the scenes. They just show up and it’s all done. Kudos to the ones that do what a lot of people wouldn’t.
Ummm...there're not supposed to know or appreciate that work. Their focus is to get through the day and lay a loved one to rest. They pay for the work.
My father worked at Cemeteries most of his life and told me stories as a kid. The one that always scared me the most is of how when the families of the diseased wanted to disinter their loved ones to move for what ever reason, the seals on the burial vaults would not seal properly causing the casket to float inside the vault and the casket be under water. My father was not kidding and said sometimes the vault was buried a few years and seen them flooded. He also seen them in the ground for decades and was dry. That is why I will be cremated and not bobbing around in a vault with insects.
My mom floated up & out of the ground... even the lid on the vault washed away!!! They contacted us and she had a paper in the casket that said her plot mark 😔
Actually, it’s meant to keep the ground from caving in when heavy machinery inevitably runs over it, since a buried wooden/metal casket would smush to a pancake otherwise. But thanks for your “industry insight”, brainiac.
Judgment Proof I understand that, but there is no preservation of a crushed casket, hence the primary reason for a vault AKA ‘durable outer container’. Keep in mind also that not all burial vaults are created equal, as some do not have a seal to keep water out while others do.
You are only partially correct. The purpose of the vault is to keep a coffin from rising out of the ground during floods. It's also a major money maker for funeral homes. They promote it as a way to preserve loved ones.
You pay extra money for a gasket but there’s no way to tell if it’s gonna seal . Dug up a guy who was buried for three years because his family wanted to put him in the newly built mausoleum at another cemetery . The vault company pulled the top off and the insides was FULL OF WATER ! The funeral director had to take him with the water draining way !
In some cemeteries, the water table is higher than the vault, and it is critical to have a non-water-tight vault and casket so that the casket can be lowered to the bottom. Additionally, concrete floats. The cemetery I paid 23 years ago for 2 plots has that type of problem. I just know that my remains will be in water at certain times of the year.

I worked in a cemetary for 2 years.We buried quite a few people in my time there.I exhumed one grave and opening the vault was not easy.She had been in the grave 12 years then her sister had her moved to the mausoleum.The sister died 3 days later and we buried her in the double vault with her sister.

JAQUINTYLER The casket was in excekkent condition.We used a tractor to remove the vault from the grave.Opening the vault was like opening s soda can.The smell was overwhelming.I also dug up cremated remains also.

Thuam X No, It is to protect from grave robbers and vandals, Because most people are buried with VERY EXPENSIVE items like jewelry, watches, Etc if they requested it. Caskets have actual key locks on them. There are other reasons for sealing as well. Some relatives in my family are mortitians and funeral directors and I learned this. ☺
I used to deliver and set up burial vaults what they are for is to keep water out the epa made it where all burials had to be put in a vault to keep things from seeping into the ground
I once saw the inside of a vault and when I looked down,it was like a little metal room;probably Galvanized steel.I though i would see dirt walls and floor.Everything now is high tech for maximum preservation.I saw no way for moisture to enter the vault.They even sell metal coffins that have a metal strip on the bottom that deflects rust.
@@bobettebryan6589 Vaults can be purchased in all sorts of material. Elvis, His Mom & JFK were all buried in SOLID COPPER VAULTS. In 1950's it was $13k, 1977 $35k and now they run $155k.

And that means the family will have wasted their money they paid on the vault. The purpose of the vault is to keep air and bugs from getting to the body and preserving it as long as possible. That purpose is defeated if the vault isn’t sealed correctly.

@@nicolesueug5402 I didn't want to doubt you, so I did some basic research: 24 hours after death, most pathogens are dead. There is little risk from most diseases. There is a slight chance of getting TB if some air is expelled, and some blood borne illnesses like HIV, if you touch bodily fluids. There is no reason why someone who dies of COVID can't have a normal funeral. The workers have to follow basic guidelines to protect themselves.
Found out you have to check the small print on those expensive plots you ‘lease’ (buy) now... *some* can be resold 75 years later apparently if a relative isn’t willing to re-lease it.
For people who don't understand the need for vaults consider this: Nearly all graves are dug with a backhoe now. That means a heavy tractor will come in, spread out stabilizers then dig the hole. If you just put the casket in the ground then set the stabilizer on top of it years later, it might cave in. There is also the issue of mowing equipment needing to be able to drive around.
They also use the backhoe to compact the soil that they backfill, starting when there may only be about 18" of cover and repeating maybe each additional 18". Otherwise the soil will settle over time and there would be little depressions at each plot.
Some places have a nice ground vaults, some only sit halfway into earth. It depends on what the water level is. If the water level isn’t that much lower than the surface they can’t bury anyone below it
When I die don't waste the insurance 💰 on all this!! Come to the morgue and see my body..... On the real though....... you really don't have to do that.... We had a full service and viewing for our daughter but then we had her cremated. Its what she wanted. We miss you Beth-elle. She is whole now with a new body in the very presence of Jesus. No more pain. No more suffering.
This is why most funeral homes don't want family members around after the grave -side service has concluded. Sad truth is they don't know how calice or insensitive a cemetery worker is going to be during the final process of laying a family member down. This S.O.B in his tennis shoes was pretty calice. Just another day at the office for him.
Lisa gallant there were people near by visiting their mothers grave and they were remembering there good times..it was like 8 of them taking photos ..I even took some for them....it was really harmless...I video rev Davenport whole funeral and stayed and completed the whole thing...Down to the closing of the vault
Yup. Just a bunch of goo and rotten wood in the bottom of that concrete box, which will also disintegrate over time. What a waste of money. Better to go with at least cremation or natural burial. Funeral homes prey on peoples emotions at the time of a death of a loved one and rip the family off for a lot of money for nothing.

to whoever this persons family is, I'm sorry for your loss, I recently lost my mom jan 21st 2016 from ALS, she was cremated as it was her request, watching this made me think of my own mom's funeral, I just hope your family didn't do what mine did after mom passed away, my ENTIRE extended family quit talking to me, leaving me all alone literally....I don't find this horrible at all, I would've taped it to had my mom requested to be buried...again I'm sorry for your loss

You see how he is pealing the paper away from the underside of the lid? THAT is so that NOW the vault will seal. There is a sealant under where the lid and vault meet. The weight of the lid will seal out any outside element, even water if it is a good vault which actually USE a sealant with their vails. If you don't see THIS! Your vault isn't sealed.
Not true the vault company I used to work for took the paper off before it left the shop we had little metal spacers that went in the corner to hold the lid up from sealing
The cemented vault is necessary to keep the casket in the ground in case of a severe flooding. In other words to keep the casket from floating up out the ground.
It's actually just a landscaping issue. When the casket breaks down after being placed in the ground, you end up with a low spot I er the grave. Cemeteries don't want that. But a cement vault prevents that from happening and helps maintain a flat, groomed cemetery. If flooding is severe enough, caults will still come out of the ground.
Vaults are required in most cemeteries. If not then heavy equipment as in tractors or trucks will cave in the casket and create low spots also. But they are meant to be sealed and meant to prevent casket cave ins.

The casket holds the remains. The burial vault which you see in the video holds the casket and protects it. Bodies are buried so closely together that the vaults touch. You can see the other vaults from the hole that the burial vault goes into. It all comes down to money. There are green cemeteries that will allow you to be buried in a shroud and put in the ground. Or in a natural eco friendly coffin made of pine or whicker.
In at least some states, vaults are required by law because if there isn’t one, a coffin can rot and collapse causing the ground to sink. It’s dangerous.
What a colossal waste of money. I live in the country and have approval for having a green funeral. Essentially, it involves having a plot of ground (1/4 acre) surveyed out, registered with with county as a cemetery. At the time of death, wherever it occures, I am wrapped in a cotton shroud and buried in a five foot hole and buried. No embalming, no casket. Has to be done within 72 hrs. Can be extended if properly refrigerated and longer if frozen.
many people were buried alive i know of situation as a first responder where the person was declared dead then sit up ask what the hell is going on called catatonic state many first responders have grey hair for a reason i earned mine
My dad's bottom part of his vault was already in the ground and was covered from debris until his coffin was placed in and then the top was brought in and lowered.

Normally in Memphis no one is around when this part is being done...just because their hats are backwards doesn't equate to being idiots as they explained to me they all had their own part that they do, it was hot out there and there were a lot of funerals that day... So be nice until u find out why something is being done...

***** yes they all had a job..1 guy set up the whole tent...chairs..etc...the other guy was 2 seal the vault and help remove the tent etc..and the last guy was to use the machine and cover the hole..they had like 15 funeral that morning
There is nothing you can do to keep the body from decomposition if every thing is sealed perfect the body will still decompose it is natural, that is the reason Jewish caskets have holes drilled in bottom , they are also not allowed to have any metal in them
During my uncles burial there were people leaving the graveyard doing burnouts that's so disrespectful to do that in a cemetery but when someone is being buried and you do that it's so messed up
I have seen that done at the request of the family the person being buried was a long time member of our car club,and a commercial builder of some custom cars(He did the body on my truck),and in the procession were quite a few customs and Hotrods,the "burn outs" were done carefully-not insane displays,and were requested by the family,it was a way of offering a fond farewell to a friend,the funeral home people rather liked it as well,it was nor disrespect,but quite the opposite.
GAWD!! What a pain in the ass!! It looks like this process hasn't changed for 100 years. You'd think someone would invent a device that runs on electricity or at the very least a PTO connection to that tractor sitting there.
They have a device that does that. It cost a lot. And unless someone is going to pay over 4 thousand dollars for a casket lowering device that’s what they have to do.

It's always sad to lose a loved one, but to lose someone this young is beyond tragic! I just hope the person didn't suffer or was the victim of foul play.
Just a couple of points to take note of. Never wear a hat at a grave, especially backwards. Where are your steel toe boots or shoes. Never rest anything on or against a monument. I know, I work in funeral services.
+smithersonjones any funeral I've been too we've always stayed till after the burial, it's a southern thing. But I always stayed to make sure the burial was done right and properly.
I've never seen the vaultman remove the paper off of the seal tape in the cemetery. There's nothing wrong with it I guess but usually thats done before transport to the cemetery.
how about burying them standing up?? in a tube casket, round and lower them in a round hole in the ground with a crane. a well driller can drill the holes in the ground, plant more people in less space !! and deeper too! one on top of another !! how about an hdtv headstone? I have a key and when I go to the headstone, I put my key in and turn it, and a video come on of the deceased, now I can hear and see the person when they were alive!! and I know what they have to say for themselves !
The vaults used to be made of concrete. They have come a long way since then. Funeral homes realize most family members will pay crazy money for their dead loved one. They are now made more elegant. A crane had to place my mother's lid on top of the vault.

+keri caye Just to explain the vault helps near sea side where there's a lot of water/moisture in the ground. Eventually the vault/coffin will collapse as nature takes its course but by that time whoever knew the person would be long gone as well. However you are right that it's all about money but that is an unfortunate side effect of being alive in this world.
+MrHellotherehowareu ah....I have seen these cement vaults in Pomona, Californa, and its not near the seaside..........its just the TYPICAL FUNERAL RIPOFF of grieving people....at their saddest ...and funeral people KNOW THIS ...Funeral Home owners take that advantage...all funeral expenses SHOULD BE far cheaper but its a lost battle............so people are forced to be cremated when the family actually doesn't want that................how sad $$$ hungry people
keri caye It's not cement vault. The one featured here is a stainless steel vault. It costs roughly 2-3k more which isn't that much. Even if you're cremated, you can get a vault for the urn if you want to be buried. Cremation is not necessarily "cheap" as you will still pay quite a lot of money. Plus if this person is in a veteran cemetery, the cost is 0 other than whatever additional stuff your purchase. I don't believe there's any ripping off done here. A bare minimum funeral is roughly 2-3k while a full blown one can be as high as 20-30k. It's really up to you. I believe they passed a federal law recently where funeral homes have to give a break down of their entire process before you pay to ensure you don't get ripped off. If you have life insurance, the funeral expense is practically none for you. If your loved ones don't have life insurance or any cash, then yeah, you'll be left to choose what you can afford which would be sad.

Casket in a vault in the ground. That's alot of layers. I suppose the worms won't get to you. In Britain you get put in the ground in a box and that's it.
