Tan Sock Fong's creative art glass studio in Singapore is grounded on her understanding of materiality and her love for sharing creative methods with youth and people with special learning requirements. This short documentary talks about her approaches to her materials of glass, stone, sand, pigments and print, using these in public and community commitments.
Glass artist and printmaker Tan Sock Fong pursued her passion in glass at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, 1995. She showed at Glass: Passage of Evaluation, in Singapore 1993, and was artist-in-residence at David Ruth Glass Studio, Oakland, USA, working on cast glass. Sock Fong’s glass works have been exhibited at many venues including The Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham, UK, 1995; Singapore Art Museum, 1992 and 1999; National Museum Art Gallery, 1988 and 1989; and LaSalle-SIA College of The Arts. Her solo The Unveiling of the Hidden was at Utterly Art, Singapore in 2005, and by invitation at the Hsinchu Glass Museum, Taiwan in 2013. Her 2015 sculpture Kindling Aspiration was commissioned for Torch Up the opening programme of the 28th South East Asian Games, Singapore. Sock Fong’s glass commission 'Dancing Hues of Life' for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital was launched by the Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong at their opening in 2015 with Phase Two completed in 2016.
3D Artists - In Studio is the latest video series featuring 3D artists of Singapore. The challenges that 3D artists face are many. In the visual arts space dominated by 2D artworks, we want to highlight the works of artists who work in 3D using metal, glass, clay, wood and stone among other materials. Theirs is a practice where creativity and imagination must be coupled with great technical skill that is developed over time, as well as access to workshop facilities and materials. These artists are also visionaries to the future of the city’s time and place markers. How their personal investigations and investment in their materials are developed through their practice is succinctly articulated through these recordings.
