But are too uneducated, and ignorant to realize that their way of living is a death sentence for many afghans. FYI, I do not like the Taliban and would like them to be eradicated like plague rats. However, I do remember the leader of the Taliban back then did to Bamiyan, not for religious convictions, but an issue with the humanitarian assistance they complained about. The Buddhas were built by the Hazara people who are the native and indigenous people of Bamiyan. The Taliban are ignorant fools, who due to geopolitical gains falsely claim that Hazaras are the Descendants of Mongols who entered Afghanistan during the Mongol invasion of that region in the 13th Century. But this is a blatant lie as The Hazara people were Buddhists before they converted to Islam, and The buddhas which were built by the Hazara people in the 6th Century ( or way before that ) are living proof that Hazaras have been living in Afghanistan for thousands of years and way before their conversion to Islam. The main reason the Taliban destroyed the buddhas were to destroy the Hazara history and deny them their identity as being the indigenous people of that region. Furthermore, the Blatant lie and attempt of some people who tried to falsify the history of Hazaras as being Mongols and outsiders, have been disproved, as modern DNA results have proven that Hazaras are a Turkic people with a very small admixture of Mongolian DNA (5~20%) which is typical of any Turkic people such as the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, and other Turkic people. For these reasons, the Buddhas are of critical importance and are a part of the Hazara history and Identity.

But one thing I will say about "militant monks" is that they are basically extreme nationalists who happen to be Buddhists. Buddhism as a religion doesn't in any way encourage violence. "Militant monks" would be hard pressed to defend their extremism on the basis of actual Buddhist teachings, so their militancy is essentially secular/political in nature, not rooted in Buddhism.

Besides, the people of Afghanistan converted to Islam only about a thousand years ago from Buddhism and Hinduism. If they can convert _to_ Islam en masse, it's not impossible for them to convert _out_ of Islam en masse too at some point in the distant future.

Kyrgyz people still worship tengriist deity up until 16th century, it was only in the 18th century did they began to convert to islam and islamization was completed in 19th century. Add to the side note, they're already exposed to islam since as early as 8th to 12th century but no en masse islamization. They still practiced their ancestor religion of tengriist for several hundred year up until end of 19th century did they decided to convert to islam en masse. So everything is possible really, such is the law of impermanence.

The buddha statues were cultural and historical to Hazaras. The taliban bombed the statues because they were "unislamic" but really did so because Hazaras made them.
