+Ice Cold I would think after you get the general gist of the math patterns behind it, it would be pretty straightforward. Replacing spent LEDs...that's the real pain.

Those LED cubes could be an alternative answer to holograms. Imagine a human sized cube with much smaller leds, could recreate a 3D image of someone/something. Amazing isn't it ? And leds are really cheap and energy consumption is very low. So until we get real holograms, someone start building those with a camera integrated for 3D calls. :)

Most of the time each layer is a common cathode plane, so all LEDs on the same level share the same ground, switched by a transistor. Then each column of LEDs have their anodes connected (in this case 3 anodes, one each for R, G, and B). This allows you to select any individual LED by turning on it's column and turning on the transistor to connect that layer's ground.

Dammmm, this would be like making EIGHT 8x8x8 cubes. Madness. What i really want to see someone do is use really tiny LEDs with really tiny wires, so that they don't disrupt the view so much. I guess then you'd have to concerned with it collapsing though hehe

Most valuable thing is, he is sharing everything for free, so deep about everything! I think it takes more time for the videos than to make first CUBE. He is above price for his time!! (Sorry for my English, it is not my first language)

Very nice, I have to say, I've never seen anything like that before in all my life. And the fact that its the size of a small VHS cabinet is also cool. Great job.

not as much as you'd think, a team of us built an 8x8x8 cube an university using low power LED parts, we got the current down to about 1 amp for 2mA leds. But thats only when all the LED's are being used, which we only done when testing all the connections. Realistic use was a few hundred mA
@AlexanderHolsgrove
@AlexanderHolsgrove 11 лет назад
Not a noobish question unless you already know the answer. Each of the LEDs actually contain 3 diodes, and hence you have 4 legs for each LED unit. One colour per cathode and a shared anode (can also be one leg per anode and a shared cathode)

The end goes nicely with the music from the landscape at the end of Future Crew's 1992 demo "Unreal". Not surprising, given it's the same sort of look.

LED's may be available inexpensively, but arrange the 4,096 LED's and solder the 16 ½ thousand connections... And that's just the matrix itself. Personally, I am VERY impressed.

Magnificent! I built a very much smaller one a few years ago which was nice, but nothing like a great as this! However, the thing that always occurs to me about these things is that when you use LEDs on this scale you will get individual LED failures. Have you managed to solve the problem of how you detect and swap out failed devices?

Although if enough LEDs were crammed into it it could serve the practical functionality of a 3D hologram capable of being viewed from any angle.

Hi, this is very nice. The most effort is surely to build something like this. If you use RGB LEDs, you have at least 4 connections to solder per LED. If you use intelligent LEDs, it's still 3 connections per LED. Then the power draw... as you need RGB for each pixel, let's say 20mAx3x4096 = 245Amps(!) for all LEDs on white, ok, you can do some multiplexing, but you loose brightness... alone the electronic parts + power supply must be about 800 USD... WELL DONE!

Common RGB LEDs draw about 20mA each and since this cube only turns on one layer at any instance (multiplexing phenomenon). One layer contains 256 LEDs. At operating voltage of 3V, the LEDs consumes 256 * 0.02A * 3V = 15.36W. Not too bad I guess.

Well i can help you out best as i can as for silicone id say try things like acylic cement if you bond the acrylic cube with the acrylic cerment it should be waterproof just the part of waterproof the output input wires. As for the lighting programs you actualy run the leds of a chip that you program such as a picaxe chip and the programs you write tell what output to have voltage etc lighting up the corect led etc etc you could start of by making a very simple 3x3x3 led cube using a ic555 :)

im not really sure abt this , but u can also consider sense (by touching) as a 4th dimension rt? if the 3th dimension is related to time then , what we see in 3d is already related to time and that means its 4D o.O wait what? D: im confused now lol
