3D Print an entire RC model railway (indoor or outdoor) including a wifi controlled steam locomotive which streams a live video feed to your mobile and blows steam out its funnel!
This video is sponsored by PCBway. 👇 More info below 👇
Follow my detailed guide to build your very own indoor or outdoor garden railway and model train with working steam effect.
Built to an O gauge scale you can use your existing tracks or print new ones on your printer. The train itself is powered by a lithium ion battery pack (dead rail) and is controlled using wifi from your phone via the rain own onboard ad-hoc wifi network. This is all made possible thanks to the ESP32-CAM and some simple electronics.
PCBWay provide rapid turnaround of both PCBs and 3D printed components. Find out more about having them 3D print your train here: www.pcbway.com...

I realize this is a simplified rendition of an early steam locomotive, as such I still felt it should have had some form of valve gear typical of such machines. Photos of Boston & Providence railroad's "Daniel Nason" show such a locomotive WITHOUT valve gear does exist. Actually, minor modifications would be necessary for your design to resemble the "Daniel Nason" - perhaps that was your plan all along! Great video, my plan is to use your project to build one in "G" scale.

What an amzing project. As I was watching this from the beginning. I was wondering how Lewis going to overcome this or that. Bit by bit each challenge was solved often in a very easy and simple way. That's real genius. Thank you so much for designing, detailing and publishing your amazing projects.

Hi, you build great machines and make your videos very professional. Are you doing this alone or with several people? I run a very small channel and also build 3D printed machines. I also know how much time is required for such projects. Keep it up.
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines Год назад
Hi, thanks of your kind words and appreciation of what's involved. I do it alone which is why it takes months for each project. One day when I can afford it I would love to have a second person to help out. You have some great engineering on your channel. The braiding machine is mesmerising and reminds me of the 'Mater's Junkyard Jamboree' at Disneyland which uses a similar mechanism.
@FraensEngineering
@FraensEngineering Год назад
The braiding machine is interesting to almost everyone. For this reason I would like to start a Kickstarter campaign and sell a small series of this machine. But there are still some improvements to be made. Beside a fulltime job it takes a little bit longer.

I have been working on my 1950s trains with IOT and 3D Printing for nearly 10 years. And have followed a mostly traditional path of improving the 1950s methods and styles. My Channel in You Tube is Frankentrain Laboratories. I am blown away by your video here I just saw it. I have seen a LOT of DIY train videos and even tried to use a few on my projects. I have not added the camera it is on my list. I am most impressed with the screens on your phone. I also use the ESP Microcontrollers. Wroom 32 and 8266 types. I really want to try leverage your code on one on my trains. One question is scale, I think the control part does not care but your assembly of this engine truly relies on the O Scale for space. I run in S Scale which is smaller. I like the engine style you have and would like to see that engine scaled down to S. But the detailed parts then would not fit as easily. Could you consider supporting such a rework for an S Version. Secondly we also use mostly track power. I have trucks that could easily match your tender for power pickup, And i have PCBs for AC to DC and DC regulated to 5V as needed. I am very excited to see your use of vapor, I have several kits but not thought of a good way to adapt, hold water and refil, plus we like Chuff & Puff. I have sounds triggered by a cam that also could pulse the power to the Vapor assembly. Maybe we could share ideas and tech ???? Awesome project, now i must go back and see all your past work for more ideas. Look at my channel I would share if you see anything useful. Dennis in Virginia, USA

I sent you a coffee, then i tried to download the instructions looking for the INO file. But my Security does not like The Documentation software that is required. How can i get the instructions and especially the INO File? I did not order the ESP Board yet waiting to be sure I could get the software, it looks very slick. Dennis

@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 2 года назад
Thanks. No, the atomiser is completely silent. You’ll struggle to know it’s on if you had your eyes closed.
@osmanpasha_diy
@osmanpasha_diy Год назад
Very impressive! Just one thing - it is in no way an atomizer, because the mist you see is just water vapor, not separate O and H atoms (which would be invisible, require immense power to produce and pretty useless anyway). The device is in fact, an ordinary piezo transducer.

This is a really great video, well done all around. And I really appreciate the way you took the time to explain everything. Also that's brilliant with the body having that built in channel to measure the brass rod lengths. And using wagos as bus connectors is also a great idea. I have to ask why you are using purge towers with only 1 color of filament though? That is a waste unless you are switching between different filaments using 1 nozzle. Seriously though this is a great video.
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 2 года назад
Thank you for the kind words. I’m really happy to have incorporated the rod cutting guide into the chassis body. 😊 The narrow tower on the left is only there when filming for a time lapse. It prevents adverse stringing occurring on the print as a result of the nozzle oozing whilst it pauses out of the view of the camera while it captures a photo. I do not include that tower unless time lapsing.
@AgentPothead
@AgentPothead 2 года назад
@@DIYMachines You're very welcome. And that makes a ton of sense with the time lapse! I have also seen designs they put a wipe brush the nozzle can clean itself off by running over. Is great work all around.

Great ideas for a cool project. However, I have to admit to being slightly puzzled. You say that you are using an ESP32-CAM board and yet your code uses a known incompatibility in the analogWrite() function. Am I missing something? Thanks for the inspiration but stuck at the first attempt to upload the code?

Great Video Lewis. You inspired me to make one for my grandkids! I printed all the parts and ordered all the other items on the list. I received the ESP32-CAM-MB and followed all of your instructions to the letter but the code simply won't upload. The USB COM port is working with the latest driver but I keep getting an "upload error". Thinking I received a bad board, I ordered a new one but had the same result. After doing some reading on Discord, Amazon and other places, I found that many people have had the same problem so I used all of their suggestions to no avail. At this point I'm hoping I can find someone who is willing and able to flash the board for me. My only other option would be to put a POT and switch on the tender to operate it manually. Can anyone help? I've flashed many chips in the past on other projects but this one has me stumped.

It originally had one when the main drive wheels were fixed rigid in respect to the main train body. I took the decision to remove them and have the large driving bogie rotate so that the train could take tighter corners allowing the track to be more varied in confined spaces.
