Today we'll be building this awesome design spiral speakers!
They look and sound absolutely brilliant! Is this best looking 3D printed speaker? Let me know in the comments bellow.
Disclaimer:
The authors of this design, concept and 3D model - formerly called Akemake, now operating as DEEPTIME - are manufacturing professional version of Spirula speakers with enclosures 3d printed from sand. What you are seeing in the video is a cheap plastic filament DIY hobby version of the Spirula speakers that is not comparable in audio or enclosure material quality with the professionally produced speakers by DEEPTIME. The DEEPTIME studio produces Spirula speakers optimized for specific drivers and with enclosures printed from one piece without split lines, seams or bolts holding them together. If you are curious how such spiral-shaped 3D printed speakers could look and sound like when done properly, please visit www.deeptime.li...
List of parts and components for cheap DIY version of these spiral speakers:
Audio labs 4 inch (8ohm) Speakers -- goo.gl/EVTZP4
Mini Bluetooth Amplifier -- bit.ly/2td5Jvd
Recommended 3D printer for this project:
Get the new Creality CR10 V2 3D printer from:
Amazon - amzn.to/33y8DYi
Banggood - bit.ly/34Ju9Jz
WOOD/PURE Filament (You need at least 2 rolls 30% infill)
Aprintapro PURE Filament sadly is no longer available.
Print time with simplified 3D is around 16 hours per one side enclosure at 30% infill. With Cura 3.2.1 is around 24 hours as CURA use much more traveling.
Speaker seal ring(3D printed flex) -- goo.gl/G4YREY
Speaker spikes(3D printed) -- goo.gl/tvdeXG
Sadly STL files are no longer available but I found similar design:

Meh to the haters, so what, we all know you rarely hear any 'real' sound on a YT vid, I'm willing to bet these beautifully designed and built speakers are better that what 95% of the people here are listening to at home, don't knock it until you do/see/hear it, until then, go find a better life man.

I love how people think they can assess the sound of these through a microphone in a room, then a compressed RU-vid video and then their own speakers.

(chuckle) Glad I’m not the only one bothered by this. I suppose it’s better than nothing - it would be weird to go through all that and not play them at all - but it is a bit like experiencing a forest from a newspaper photo and a scratch-and-sniff sticker.
@vooveks

well, technically if your speaker is better than the one they're showing, there's a small chance that you can hear the difference even with all that. For instance, i can tell this has way less bass than my own speaker, even if the sound was recorded through a mic. but duh, i use a 450w (rms) minisystem for audio on my pc, so that's expected.
@mohammadwasilliterate8037

I love how you think people are unaware they are listening through a compressed video on RU-vid to their own speakers, dumbass.
@0525ohhwell

They really do sound pretty tight. Tongue and Groove joining of the two halves like HexiBase does might be a little nice touch. Also, you can wire speaker polarity in reverse and its fine as long as all the other speakers are wired reverse as well.

Can't be unique since Bowers & Wilkins have used this design in their top of the range NAUTILUS (it looks a ton better too!). Regardless, well done!
@Stilloffside
@Stilloffside 5 лет назад
Have you tried porting the speakers? This style is based on a transmission line speaker where the bass is increased through a chamber. Porting could help dramatically decrease your power requirements because they increase the bass output of a speaker by around 3 dB. Might be something you want to experiment with. That said I don't know the properties of the driver so possibly a sealed chamber works best. They do look nice, almost like mini Nautilus Bowers and Wilkins speakers.
@svtcontour
@svtcontour 5 лет назад
This is similar to the B&W nautilus. Its not a transmission line design. The idea is that the back wave will travel into the chamber that is getting smaller and smaller. Taking the back wave and trying to turn it into heat so you get reduced internal standing waves, reflections..etc. Porting it would destroy it.

Making these awsome designs. 4 halves printed and stained. Clamps ordered... What size self tappers did you use. Think I will use some with a Torx head in black. An add on cowling over the speaker just hiding the screw heads would look good. Great little project and a very clear video. Thank you. Took me 40 hours per side used cura to slice and went for a 40% fill with layers of 0.2mm Nick
@petermatos4613
@petermatos4613 4 года назад
I am printing them now and also using Cura, my first one was at 40 percent infill and 4 outer layers at 80mm feed. Took over 34 hours... Kinda ridiculous for what it is. I was surprised to read in this video details that in Simplify3d it only took 16 hours. That is an incredible difference in speed.

5:48 reversing polarity does not cause such problems. it will cancel the stereo effect (making everything sound off and disembodied) in a stereo set up, and will cause destructive interference for the the bass waves with other drivers running the opposite polarity. granted, you still have to wire up your system in the correct polarity, but not because of any kind of distortion.

I love how well the finish turned out on that filament! Nice work. A note on speaker connection: it matters less if the positive pole on the speaker connects to the positive on the amp. What you must pay attention to if using more than one speaker is that you connect then both in the same way.

How about sharing some measurements? Free software such as Arta or REW will perform a frequency response. Even using the microphone you have would produce good enough results. A close measurement, mic 2 cm away and a farther measurement mic maybe 25 cm away from speaker would be great to see. I suspect that the long tube will have some pretty big resonance modes. I think if you pull the woofer out and really stuff the enclosure tightly with another 300 g of stuffing it could sound better. Having a perfectly round baffle will introduce large response variations. Take a look at the Linkwitz page. www.linkwitzlab.com/diffraction.htm Thanks for sharing.

dont ask that from a millenial youtuber; they only care about adjetives like "cool" and "awesome" but you show them a scientific/physics chart/measurements and they cringe about it; for serious tests about speakers go to some audiophile forum like DrAiX's

sorry, how did you use a 50w amplifier to power the 25w speakers? isn't that too much? Or does it split 50w into two channels so: 50/2?

I think if you make a small hole at the other end, kinda circular port it will sound more better. Let me know your thoughts.

can you share where you ordered the speaker terminals from, I just completed the 3d Printed enclosures and want to put this together using the same terminals you used. Thank you. They look GREAT so far. Can't wait to hear them play.
