If you had told me a few years ago that individuals would be 3D printing rubbery tires for LEGO vehicles today, I wouldn't have believed you. It's crazy how far the technology has come.

I mean Im pretty sure this was possible a few years ago too, I was watching youtubers use flexible filaments as long as 8 years ago
@coffeeinhandproductions3238
Never would have guessed with the limitations of earlier 3D printers they could now be used to create rubber like tires for Lego sets. Really cool, and informative video, and the new variation of tires really do improve the look of the car.
@DCLXVIDS
@DCLXVIDS Год назад
Awesome video :D Probably too difficult but maybe you can print a model for the tire in hard material then make a silicon mold with that, and then cast the tires with liquid rubber. or maybe just a thin layer of liquid rubber or latex on the printed tires themselves. edit: with difficult I mean labor intensive and messy. I'm sure you could do it.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
I did a brief research and although using urethane and silicone casting rubbers is definitely possible, people did it already successfully for RC cars, but this is a topic that requires quite some time to master. Maybe I'll take a look at it later, first I'll do my tests with resin 3d printing, that might be an easier way to achieve what we are looking for :)

I’ve always found the Porsche 911 RSR Lego model to also have disproportionate wheels/tires. It would be amazing if you could also take a look at improving that model as well.

That’s great! Two years ago I’ve purchased the Lambo but I didn’t like gold rims at all and I didn’t want to paint them. So I tryed to design and print new rims for my lambo and this is the result. New rims, new color, old rims are still in box. I think 3D printers give us a lot of opportunities, the “only” difficults are beeing able to use 3D printer and software for design.

3D printing is relatively new technology,but with the time it will be improved,it will become type of technology that we will use on everyday basis in our households,like pc's or smartfones today for example.Nice educational video.🙂👍

Have you thought about 3D printing molds and then casting polyeutherane or silicone rubber into it to make wheels? This is done a lot with combat robotics and can give some absolutely great results, although generally the hub is inserted into the mold so the tire is permanently fixed to the hub.

No need to print out better tires and rims to see that the ones on the LEGO set are way off. A simple photoshoped image would suffice. But I appreciate the effort put into the video and showing how elastic parts can be printed. The other possibility would be to look for RC vehicle tires, they often match the LEGO rims good enough.

@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
I would need more guidance for these test, this is too generic with a lots of possibilities. We tried a heat gun on the material, only made it shinier. But whatever changes happen to the material it needs to be structural, otherwise anything covering it could be rubbed off during usage.

Would there be a way to coat the 3d printed tires with another material to make them more grippy?
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf Год назад
For creating your own Lego parts - 3D printing should not be used for the final parts. Rather use it for what it is good for - prototyping. get your design ready but without such things like axel-holes. Prepare the parts to have no surface defects and then create a mould and cast the parts in resin. Then add needed holes by drilling them. That way you can get parts with tighter tolerances, better finishes and way stronger.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
Well, good luck drilling proper axle holes ;)
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf Год назад
@@RacingBrick i mean i do have drills in 0.1mm increments. Getting holes aligned correctly and maybe having a bit more slop or a bit tighter holes is imo preferable to the warping, shrinking and lack of strength you get from printed parts.
