3D Printing: Epic Fail Pokeball on Raise3D N2+ with Orbpolymer

3d printing is still more art than science. I was printing a Pokeball from Pokemon for my friend and her sons. What happened is best described as an epic failure. Here is what happened and how I fixed it!
Also, the Raise3D N2+ was incredibly easy to fix, even though it was my own stupidity that broke it. Big shout-out to Raise3D for the help, and thanks for getting my printer back on track.

Omfg I lost it when the bed came loose XD Just did something similar on the Tevo because I was lazy and didn't use enough clips for the bed.

ROTFL same here, about the laughing that is. I've only ever printed 1 model with less than 4 clips, and that was purely bc I had to alternative and couldn't find a spot for more than 2...and it managed to shift ever-so-slightly at some point and left a nice, just-barely-noticeable band along the entire, huge thing. :(

Usually when you talk about bed adhesion, you worry about parts sticking to the bed. Very rarely o you have to worry about your bed STICKING TO THE PRINTER. LOL!

Thank you for sharing your failures as well as your successes. It is one of the things special about your channel. It is just as or more instructive to see what fails as well as what works. I surely appreciate it. I have a question. I am getting excited about 3D printing. I don't mind finishing work and want to be able to make table top miniature terrain and sci-fi/fantasy shelf props. I have plenty of tools, including a soldering iron and can self assemble with decent instructions. What under 800$ printer do you recommend that has decent print resolution and would be useful for someone starting out that isn't too hard to use and is pretty reliable. Thanks for your time.

Hi, I have been doing some research for a similar printer, my 2 cents, Tevo Mini Monster and CR-10, maybe if you have more budget SeemeCNC V3, and do not forget the Original Prusa i3. All Except the CR-10 have bed leveling

I also tried to fix my E3D V6 once at a late hour in a frustrated mood with little patience... and I broke it...I completely agree with Joel. If you got a hot end issue late at nite, JUST GO TO BED and fix it in the morning :)
@MakeItWithCalvin
@MakeItWithCalvin 8 лет назад
One thing I would add in is keep a tap and die set that matches the threading your hot-end. A cheap but decent quality one is all you need. Use the tap to clean out the heater block/where the nozzle goes in and use the die to clean any external threads on say a heatbreak and your good to go! The less resistance/crap that melts into the threads the better plus the cleaner the connection the better the thermal transfer and less likely your going to get nasty jams in the future. Also a bit of extra insurance a bit of high-temp anti-seize on the threaded bits + the thermal sensor & heater block helps remove things in the future. As for don't work on stuff when your not there 100%... good gosh I can't stress that enough especially when your working with any kind of potentially dangerous machinery! I have caught myself doing all kinds of dangerous stuff when machining and not having my "head in the game" as they say!

One idea for your rig ... if you can do so, can you run the fan on the 2nd hot end even if you aren't using it at the time? That way, if the primary fan fails, the second one should cause enough airflow across the fins to keep the primary/active one cool enough to finish a print. #HighFive

Oh man! That same thing happened to us when our Flashforge nozzle got clogged, we didn't heat the nozzle enough and it snapped right off. So frustrating when you don't think things through first! And then you have to play the waiting game for replacement parts, with the printer staring you in the face every time you walk by, laughing (or crying) at your stupidity... Glad I'm not the only one who can't brain sometimes. Also, We're hoping to go to the NYC maker faire, if so, we'll see you there!

have you ever made a Star Trek phaser rifle? I want to get into 3D printing print props for myself and fellow trekkies but I can't afford a big printer not with my fixed income unless it's worth it. I see some 3D printers selling phaser rifles but with super cheap crappy ABS that melts from paint with acetone. would you recommend a printer that could print a phaser rifle in parts and I want to use metal PLA weight and durability and I want to put a laser in the nozzle with a photo strobe I already set up the electronic now just need to figure out 3D printer part.

I feel your pain. I have broken a throat on my Prusa i3 clone. In my case it was a combination of my brute strength (stop laughing) and the cheap throat that is very thin at the heat break area. Luckily, I had already purchased a couple of spare hot ends, so, I just switched it out and was able to print again. I am developing quite a collection of spare parts, as there are not stores in my area that sell 3D printers or spare parts. #HighFive

There should be an app that sends your phone a picture of the build at an interval determined by the operators level of OCD and allows you to abort the print and activate the autodeclogging system remotely. There I fixed that (give myself a cookie).
@KlausJepps

Been there lots of times with a gigabot xl which I modded to 1,75mm filament and 1,2 nozzle. You should always have extra hotends! get a blower to heat your hotend to clean it with a cloth and use a drill to bore the stuck filament out. You can work on your printer even when you and the printer is wasted, just always think twice about what you are doing.

If you watch the video again you will see that the root cause of this failure was the part in the upper right came loose from the bed. It then started printing in air (which never works well!) So you think that this is more epic than the time your gmax became engulfed in plastic. Iwould disagree acsept for the fact that you had only clipped down a sheet of BuildTak and not just adhered it to the build surface and then it came free and went on a Rollercoaster ride along with the rest of the spegetti.

As I am new to 3d printing at home, with only a single delta printer, i am curious to know.... How did the clogged hot end result in the breaking of the support structures? Maybe I missed it in the video. It also appears that your print bed came loose from the printer and was dragged around with the nozzle? How was this addressed?

Support structure piece got knocked loose, THEN the nozzle dragged it around the build plate. The build plate is BuildTak on glass, and that's clipped into place. So, when the nozzle was moving with that one piece attached to it, the rest of the pieces were stuck down good, so the clips gave out.

I still can't believe your wife lets you hang out with all these girl friends! All the married guys I know would have their head on a chopping block if they even spoke to another woman :/ Your wife is awesome :D
