Very professional showing, from video editing to discussion generation. 3D printing is such a promising field, and it is fascinating to consider the sustainability incentives of its incorporations. Plastic waste is mitigated and unused material can be recycled for other projects. Innovative in many ways!
@markroy4062
@markroy4062 Год назад
Plastic waste is sort of a dirty secret of the 3D printing industry. People are working on solutions such as reforming waste into new filament, but the technology is not widely distributed. Most people (especially in the consumer/hobbyist side) have big bins full of scraps, failed prints, wasted filament, removed supports, etc... Even the spools that the filament come on are often plastic that ends up in the recycling bin or garbage. At least many filament makers are starting to use cardboard spools or re-usable spools.

Yes, one thing I found that really is interesting to me is the crowd sourced Enable the Future project. They have a world wide network of volunteers who can print, fit, or design prosthetics for children. Many children don't have access to prosthetics because they are growing too quickly for expensive traditional prosthetics to be cost effective, but this large network of people has come together to help these children and those who might never be able to get access to proper prosthetics.

Nice summary. Don't forget automotive manufacturing. There's quite a few high end vehicles using 3d printed exotic parts, similar to aerospace.
@markroy4062
@markroy4062 Год назад
Yes, we did look at that as well, but had a time limit on the video. The biggest application in automotive is actually for 3D printed fixtures and tooling, which is another area of manufacturing that has become revolutionized by 3D printing. It is much easier with 3D printing to produce very accurate fixtures and jigs that would have taken much longer to produce manually. The best part is that if you wear out the fixture, it's just a matter of printing a replacement in a few hours. Of course everyone when they think automotive thinks that they use it mainly for wind tunnels and "look and feel" prototypes, which they do, but the dynamic capability to improve reproducibility, quality, and speed in manufacturing is by far the more valuable application.

There are a lot of 3D printed gadgets and decorations, almost everyone with access to a printer goes through a phase of printing non-functional prints. The really great part of 3D printing is that it enables creativity and new ideas giving companies and individuals the capability to experiment and find solutions other than just buying things to solve their problems.

3D printing can definitely provide benefits to the medical and aerospace industries however it should be noted, there are still many subtractive functions that need to happen after printing which can drive the cost back up depending on the dimensional requirements. Metal additive is definitely cost prohibitive for the average person to enter, but PLA printers can be found in many households (including mine) and can help the average person replace broken parts difficult or expensive to find on the market. Great video, I enjoyed watching it!
@markroy4062

Yes, it is true that many 3D printed parts need machining afterwards, but by printing the part it greatly reduces the time and cost of that operation. Especially for some of the parts like the aluminum titanium alloy turbine blades which are very difficult to machine and is so hard that it chews through cutting tools very quickly. With 3D printing, it can print the parts and reduce the machining to just a short finishing operation. I believe that metal printers will eventually become more common place with lower cost access for smaller companies and even individuals.

We’ve seen 3D printing being used by some of our subcontractors to develop prototype mock-ups for design proposals of complex details in our projects- it’s invaluable to provide architects with physical samples of their designs to help make decisions about what goes into the finished buildings without constructing full on assemblies saving time and money. Game changer!

I would love to try a 3D printed steak. It would be amazing if we could make protein that is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing but with little to no carbon footprint. Maybe one day astronauts will be eating 3D printed steak on Mars.

3D printing has always fascinated me since begining to use it for prototyping at work. There's two thoughts I've always had with the innovations of 3D printing. For 3D printing buildings, who is responsible for the structural integrity of the print? Through experience, certian prints or even layers do not print consistently due to ambient conditions. If this were the case when printing a building, how do we identify and resolve some impurities that might be found with the building? What's always interested me is the thought of 3D printing food. 3D printing food essentially has various ingredients in viscous forms being pushed through the printer. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, it becomes tough to replicate the natural crunch through 3D printing. Is there some nutritional tradeoff to 3D printing food?
@markroy4062
@markroy4062 Год назад
Great points about the 3D printed buildings. As far as I know, none of the 3D printed buildings look like they would meet code and may be very difficult to inspect. In a traditional build, you do all the electrical without sheetrock and then get an inspection where they can see every wire and termination. I think there will definitely be some regulatory changes needed for permanent and mainstream 3D printed buildings (and testing to prove that 3D printed buildings are as good or better in terms of safety and longevity). I think that food printing is currently just a novelty, but with smaller and more precise printers maybe in the future it will be possible to create different textures (even perhaps crunch). Personally, I'd like to see new foods that are not trying to imitate existing non printed foods, just like I prefer vegetarian dishes that aren't trying to be meat.

Wow. This was so so cool. I wonder if 3D printers are cheap enough for the common man. Also this makes me think of my own life and being a wheelchair user and I wonder if they to can be one day 3D printed ( since it clearly can hold body weight as you said in your video. It would make it even more custom and fitted and faster and lighter possibly and I wonder if it would cut down the cost. ( they are way over priced) Really neat video.
@markroy4062
@markroy4062 Год назад
You can get a cheap desktop printer nowadays for a few hundred dollars. If you spend a bit more you can get a really decent printer like the Creality Ender 3. A few companies are doing 3D printed wheelchairs, but there are also a bunch of designs for accessories like cupholders, phone mounts, clips, etc. that could allow you to personalize your ride.

3D printing is innovating almost as fast as AI is!
@markroy4062
@markroy4062 Год назад
The cool thing to think about is the combination of 3D printing and AI. There is a lot of work going on right now on using AI to design 3D parts and models. Eventually, you may be able to give a prompt with some rough dimensions and descriptions to a tool like ChatGPT and it will spit out a 3D design that can be printed immediately, or refined and tweaked by designers.
