Back in 2015 I released a video about 3d printing and it's use for custom car audio. At the time many were skeptical citing that printing took too long and the materials weren't practical. Fast forward to today and now shops and enthusiasts around the country are using 3d printing to make parts for custom car audio builds. The next big technological leap for car audio? 3D Scanning. Made possible by precision 3d scanners being more affordable this is a trend you will want to get in on early and start learning now.

A video on using this thing would be epic if you do ever get the time for it. This thing looks super useful for more than just custom car audio, and I like that! Thanks for showing this off!

That initial trunk scan looked amazingly complete... No gaps, actual depth and everything. Wild! Please make the video for the device... Never seen a scan so clean in a single pass. That was awesome!

I also think a great advantage for a shop is being able to create a "catalog" of various vehicles for future use and design work. This would make each subsequent customers' work that much more efficient.

Great point! Yeah, as long as the same model vehicle is being installed into you could avoid the whole scan process and have stuff ready to go ahead of time!

Yes! We would love an in-depth video on the 3D Scanner and why you chose that one over other ones available on the market. Maybe a series of videos from scanning to making and fitting the project.

Would be cool if there was a community to share scans. Then you could use someone else’s scan to design an enclosure when they order from you.

Hey Mark, this looks super interesting. I’m sure there are other tutorials out there, but if you ever get the time I’d love to see your take on an intro video to this stuff. 3D scanning, 3D Design, etc. I’m intrigued by it all and would definitely check that out if you ever made it!

Very cool. There are so many other things as car enthusiast in general that it can be used for. Engine swaps, custom subframes and oil pans. A lot of parts and pieces now have 3d models available. If you have a CNC routing table, you can do a complex wood box design and hit send.

I've been 3D printing components for use in various automotive applications for awhile now. When people show interest about wanting to do that themselves, I generally tell them there's two components that they will need to master to make it worthwhile. One, is the actual printing process, and second is designing and modeling their own parts. The latter is typically the one which tends to scare them away. As the 3D scanning tools become more accessible, they may feel more confident to pursue the activity.

Food for thought, and my own personal prediction: as I was literally thinking of this for multiple reasons. Say you capture the door panel and frame, (If we were to go one step further bear with me please) We use the A.I Performance of Nvidia RTX Tensor, AMD Ryzen 8000, Intel 15th gen. With their A.I accelerator silicon. You have the 3D scans, and we have A.I. accelerators from custom baffles for in door tuning of the speakers for refraction, frequency, Alongside the adapter etc. You can see where I'm going with this I'm sure, we saw those subs made. But if we had high end tuning with the A.I infused 3D printed baffles, I believe it could improve the sound quality even further just like sound deadening, DSP, Amps, and Crossovers; it'd be just another level to add/climb in terms of car audio. I appreciate the very informative, conscious, and thought provoking video! 🎉 well done!

Thanks Mark I’m now 1000.00 lighter 😂 lol. I am a CAD designer myself and had been flirting with the idea of getting a scanner but until I saw your video and then researched this scanner I knew it was the one I should get. I appreciate your informative videos and always enjoy watching what project you have going on. Keep it up buddy!!!! Would love to see some videos on building a center console and door panels from scratch maybe it would be a good use for the scanner to show how to do it from start to finish. Just an idea.

What does it output in terms of actual data? The last time I used a 3D scanner (many, many, years ago) it just put out a constellation of points, of various density that you could assign, and it was up to the designer to attempt to fit surfaces through those points. It wasn't all that useful in practice to have millions of disconnected points to work with. Does this scanner spit out its own surfaces that can then be imported into other software and worked with directly?
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication Год назад
Yep, I know exactly what you mean. Or these companies would want to sell you a $4k per year license to their proprietary software that does export the data. Not the case with the one I picked up. It gives you a point cloud and in its own software you can export as .obj .stl etc. Gives you a mesh out of the software and also has many option sin the software to allow you to simplify and correct the mesh prior to export.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife Год назад
@@CarAudioFabrication Yep, exactly that. Actually, this was far enough back in the day that the vendor wasn't even sure if they _could_ export the number of points I was requesting... I was looking to create models of a machine that was built 100 years ago and we had no drawings for. It was the size of a small gas station and about 3 stories tall. 🤣 The sample data their salesman sent me after our on-site consultation was not impressive. It looks like this tool would have actually done the job if I had taken the time to wave it around long enough. 👍

i wonder if the LiDAR on a newer idevice would be able to do the same thing with the right app?
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication Год назад
I spent a ton of time trying to make that work. It's still a "toy" in my opinion and doesn't cover a wide range of needs for our applications. It can make a pretty picture but when it comes to being accurate enough to be used for true CAD data it doesn't meet expectations. At this time dedicated scanner is the way to go, especially with its accompanying software that allows for manipulation and correction of the measured point cloud and mesh.
@markwentz8332
@markwentz8332 Год назад
yeah a dedicated device would definitely offer more resolution and usable data, give it a few more generations though and perhaps?
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife Год назад
@@markwentz8332 I haven't messed with it, but there are software packages out there that will create a mesh from regular old 2D photographs. Autodesk had one they were touting a few years back. It seemed a bit fiddly and time consuming, but any camera could do it, so..?
